For all of those thinking rookie pick - I'm guessing you haven't seen footage or seen him live. The boy is going into the national draft and I assume he'll end up a Dee. It's not a deep draft at all. He will attract some interest - just something around our 4th. Might have to pay mid third for him.

Jake kicked 3 and was named 3rd best today. He's found some form, the kid.

Thats great to hear, would lbe awesome if he turned it on an showed he was worthy of a father son pick

Not even invited to the draft combine. Would've thought he's not on any other teams' radars if they aren't testing him.

He'll slip through to the rookie draft.

From Brett Anderson today:

Brett Anderson@BrettAndersonIF 4h

@ChaserJay @shetski Watched Lovett today against Sandy. Has improved a fair bit since early in year. Played mid/fwd, kicked two.

On his draft range:

Brett Anderson@BrettAndersonIF 25m

@ChaserJay @shetski Late/rookie.

Brett Anderson@BrettAndersonIF Aug 2

Hard mid whose played a lot at half back. Good decision maker. Think they (Dees) take late.

Jake invited to the State Combine and this was mentioned in the tail end of this article on AFL.com:

'Potential father-son picks Jake Lovett (Melbourne) and Jordan Matera (West Coast) were among the possible recruits invited to the Victorian state combine.

Lovett, the son of former Demon Brett, played one of the best games of his season in the TAC Cup on Sunday, gathering 24 disposals and kicking three goals in Dandenong's win over the Sandringham Dragons.'

It looks like Jake will debut for Casey this Saturday. It will be a good chance for us to have a look at him in the flesh.

Oh nice, where'd you hear that TK?

Really? is this even allowed?

If Tyler Roos can then surely a son of a melbourne great can? Be a good close up to see him and his playing style.

don't get me wrong, i'm happy it is happening, but seems weird that you can kinda, "try before you buy".

Id say its more the club really wanting to have a good look at him but yeah who knows?

Gee whiz, that escalated quickly. Bloody great news, even better if we can snag him as a rookie.

What rule is that?

http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-explained/rookie-players

FATHER-SON – ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION

The Father-Son Rule previously applied to players selected at the National Draft. Under the rule, other AFL clubs can bid for eligible players who have been nominated under the Father-Son Rule by an eligible club. The nominating club can select the eligible player by forfeiting its next available pick in the draft if a bid has been made by another club. If there is no bid from another club, the nominating club forfeits its last pick in the National Draft.

A club can pre-select an eligible player as a Category A rookie between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts (with the player’s consent) provided the player had nominated for but was not selected by another club at either the National or Pre-Season Drafts. In that case, the relevant club would forfeit its last available selection in the Rookie Draft to take the player.

This is the rule from last year, and with the new bidding system, obviously the National Draft rules have changed. But with the changes to the biding system only effecting players bid in the first 3 rounds it shouldn't effect the rules for Father-Son Rookies

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
