The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

Featured Replies

Maybe I'm trying to put too much of a positive spin on it, but he said "at the moment" - with two weeks left of trading I'd like to think that the club won't pull the trigger straight away and wait until the last week before doing anything in the hope something good comes up.

Interested to see what players we might be in to though...

It might also be a negotiating ploy targeted at those clubs who think our demands are too high for the type of player who will allow us to hand over pick two, thinking we are rapidly running out of options, but they really want a crack at Boyd.

You are right, we should be patient (and our guys seem to be playing this time a pretty sophisticated game so I'm sure they are on top of it). Pick 2 is extremely valuable for top 4 sides, and we will land something outstanding eventually I'm sure.

Forget Seedsman, go after Jamie Elliot I'd say. Can't see them parting with 10 and 11 though.

Elliot pick 10 and 11 for pick 2 and 20 would be fair I think

Mahoney on trade radio:

  • Said inbound calls from players wanting to join the club.
  • Discussion was clear with colin Sylvia that they had a plan and contract for him.
  • Pick 2 is still up for trade and more likely it will be a player and couple of picks.
  • if the right deal is out there pick 2 will be traded. wont be given away easy.
  • Tom Rockliff has been contacted by the MFC. Though wants to stay at Brisbane apparently.
  • Daniel Cross is right in our sights.
  • Mark Jamar could still be traded. Didn't hose down the thought of Jamar being traded.
  • Well sorted in the rucks and Jolly don't think will be in our sights.
  • Jack watts to play a David Mundy type midfield role.
  • Captains will be picked in a month time. Both jacks no certainty to remain captains.
  • Nathan Brown see's a bit of light at the end of the tunnel if added extra midfield.
  • Working through the Swans with Dew. Preferred candidate. Tudor wasn't spoken about.
  • Haven't spoken to Bassett.
  • Haven't spoken to Adelaide regarding Sloane.

Summary of Mahoney on Trade Radio:

Presence of Roos has ‘lifted’ the club. Club is aware that on-field results have been unacceptable.

Discussions with Sylvia were very clear – he was a required player through the midfield. Free agency gave him an option, he rejected our three year deal in favour of chasing a premiership. Moving on…

Still chatting to clubs about pick 2. Trade is a three week period; week 1 hasn’t even finished yet. It’s unlikely to be a straight swap, more likely to be players and picks. Pick 2 is a valuable pick, and the combine last week shows that it’s a quality field of players available. Still open to trading the pick for the ‘right’ deal, still ‘highly likely’, but it won’t be given away.

We directly inquired about Rockliff. He and Shuey are the sort of players we’re interested in; both of their clubs said that it was no dice, and Rockliff wants to be at Brisbane. We did not offer 2 / Jamar for 7 / Rockliff. There have been no discussions re Jamar leaving the club. The Jamar story was not true, hence why we responded to the news story.

Looking at Cross. Process is it will come post-trade period.

Our ruck stocks are pretty well set, so Jolly would only come in if there was movements with our ruck stocks.

Roos’ discussions with Watts have him ear-marked for Mundy-like role, who started as a half-back before moving into the midfield. The focus of the pre-season will be on him getting right for that role, but also expect him to be able to play back and forward.

Rawlings has done a great job with our backline, and he’ll continue in that role.

Really tough period not just for our skippers but our whole leadership group. Leading Teams comes with Roos, so decisions will be made after that process has run its course.

Decision on Cuddles was made by the board as part of the structural changes to the club as a whole.

There’s no guarantees we’ll be able to replicate Port’s climb back up the ladder, but if the correct decisions are made then hope springs eternal, with good young talent injected last year, as well as senior bodies like Matt Jones and Terlich. If you look at us compared to other teams, we’re 2-3 short in terms of midfield depth and experience. That’s what we will be trying to address with this trade period.

Going through our process for the senior assistant role, Dew was a candidate who presented to the club extremely well. Right now, he would be one of the preferred candidates. Tudor was not involved in the process. Missed the stuff on Bassett; work interrupted.

Trade period is difficult as it’s quite long now and players are overseas on holidays.

Much appreciated - thank you both very much.

And that's what we need to remember - that this is a longer process and that we will get the right deal for the pick and, if we don't, we won't trade it. Roos, PJ and Mahoney aren't fools. They'll wait until the right deal presents itself, whether that be today or on the last day of the trade period, and we won't just throw the pick away for a decent player and a second rounder.

It's hard to be patient in trade week but it's all we can do. I think we'll do other deals before we trade pick 2 anyway.

Could see them parting with one of 10 or 11 and a player for Pick 2 though. Still means we can select a very, very good player and add to our list as well. Not sure which player we would target from the Pies though.

Only Beams or Sidebottom and pick 10 for pick 2..

Only Beams or Sidebottom and pick 10 for pick 2..

I'd be happy to get either player just for Pick 2. But don't let the over valuing of our pick or the under valuing of opposition players get in the way of a fair deal.

I'd happily trade pick 2 for a combo of player/picks.

As long as we have a pick inside the top 20 we are well positioned to get a good young midfielder on the list

where?

on one of those Facebook sites

Maybe the inbound call was from Juice Newton?

No, it was from Magner... he had forgotten he was still at the club.

Either we think we can still get a top mid for pick 2 from somewhere and we are telling the club involved we will wait it out or we dont rate Aish that highly but think there are a few lower down worth a crack so we are looking for a pick in the 7 to 10 range plus a solid mid ready to go.

The good news there is no sense of panic about any of this we are not going to be rolled over by anyone. (the lack of GWS moves at this stage is very encouraging from our point of view).

Harley Bennell being mentioned.

Would trade for him just so he doesn't torch us twice a season.

If that is true, just wow.

They're probably de-listed spud players liek Pedersen and Rodan though. Don't want them.

Pick 2 to Collingwood for 10,11 and Paul Seedsman - not a rumour, just an idea

It's a rumour now *calls SEN*

Did anyone catch Denham and Bartlett in SEN this morning? Thought I heard Dom Tyson's name come up as a possible trade target for us.

Not according to your signature he aint.

Aren't you and Hogan's Hero's the same person anyway?

Latest update for today

10.15am: Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney spoke to Gillette AFL Trade Radio this morning and said the following:

The Demons are still highly likely to trade draft pick No.2 for a player/pick combination. They continue to talk to clubs about possible scenarios.

They enquired about the Brisbane Lions' Tom Rockliff and West Coast's Luke Shuey as potential trades for the pick. Both have said they'd like to stay at their current clubs.

Daniel Cross will have to wait until late in the trade period to find out if he's to be thrown a lifeline by Melbourne. The Demons will look at their net result from the exchange period and the amount of experience they've brought in before making a call on Cross.

Mark Jamar remains off the table. There have been no discussions about the ruckman leaving the club. The Demons consider their ruck stocks well sorted but would look at Darren Jolly if something was to change.

There is no guarantee Jack Trengove and Jack Grimes will captain the club next year. Leading Teams will come in and start the process to appoint a captain in the next month.

The Demons continue to work with the Sydney Swans about releasing Stuart Dew to take on the senior assistant coaching role at the club. He remains one of the Dees' "preferred candidates". Says Leigh Tudor wasn't a consideration and Nathan Bassett hasn't been involved in chats yet.

i didn't know Elliot was a midfielder.

Elliot pick 10 and 11 for pick 2 and 20 would be fair I think.

That might be fairer but I'd prefer Seedsman who is a midfielder.

2 + 22 for 10 + 11 + Seedsman

Aren't you and Hogan's Hero's the same person anyway?

Now you taking the insults to far

I'd like to put faith in our new administration/coaching crew that they could finally get us a 'champion' with pick 2.

Getting 2 or 3 or 4 'never will be's' and giving a top club the chance to recruit a youngster who might go on and haunt us for years is not what I want to see.

How long is it since we last had a true 'champion' at MFC? Who was our last 'champion'?

I want to recruit someone who will draw people through the gate, play exciting and consistent football and be a top player for many years.

Other clubs have them, is it too much to hope for us to do the same?

A couple of 'good, average' players who last three or four years and then fade into oblivion is not the path I want us to take with pick 2.

If we can't get a 'great' trade for pick 2 then choose a 'great' prospect in the draft.

Agreed. If we want a couple of OK-good players, surely we can get them for our second round pick and/or Sylvia compo which should be 2nd round also. No need to use #2 on those kinds of players.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
