As I understand it the player can only choose if their contract is up and they can walk for nothing if the club don't get them to the club of choice.

If they're half way through a contract, it's either go where you're told or stay and play in the 2's.

Yeah but players are picking the better clubs which then dilutes the trade value. If Taylor Adams said his preferred club was Melbourne on the saints then GWS could have discussions involving picks 2 and 3. Instead he's gone for Collingwood and Geelong and the best they can do is pick 10.

It's a joke. You've made it to the AFL. You've been drafted, then after 2 years you think you've earned the right to pick which club you play for just because you want to go home.

Totally agree, and it's not even a boyhood dream style 'I always went for the Dees as a kid' or whatever, just 'I think I could get instant success there, let's do that.' Makes me sick.

Blame the clubs.

They are the ones agreeing to trade a player to his favoured destination.

But remember, tough negotiations can lead to problems in the distant future.

St Kilda are in no better onfield position than MFC, but why does there seem to be a perception that MFC is a less desireable destination..?

Maybe something to do with the way we have treated departing players in recent years?

As a Melbourne supporter I totally agree, as a neutral observer can you blame any if them for giving us a wide berth. We haven't just been crap on field for 7 years our off field has been a debacle, there's cultural issues and our development of talented kids has been trash. The way out is to draft and develop our own kids and hope that by the time guys like Trengove, Grimes and Jones are in their 30's they have created a good environment for the kids in the intervening years to develop as players will actually want to come play for us. There are no quick fixes here.

Player managers perceptions have a big influence here too, as they would be advising their clients.

It's something we'll have to work hard to change, but it will change.

Cross is a delisted FA, for which trading opens on November 1. Referred to by Mahoney.

As for the rest, not sure what part of "Trade period ends Oct 25" isn't clear. Things will only start happening later in that last week, especially the tough deals. And Pick 2 for xxx is going to be a tough deal.
