Shiel is dating Mark Williams daughter so dont be surprised if the tigers make a big play for him.

You're trying to tell me the recruiting department of a multi-million dollar organisation is going to make hiring decisions based on the love life of their mentally-suspect colleague's daughter...?

Riiiiiiiiight.

don't be surprised if Mark Williams is not at Richmond either.

don't be surprised if a most of the coaches at Tigerland aren't any more, after this season.

Mark Williams used to coach our reserves with Sandy Zebra's, when we were aligned with them, wasn't it?

I reckon Hardwick is going to find it very difficult to last out the season if they don't get a few wins on the board in the second half, heard a rumour Worsfold might be sniffing around incase that job becomes open.

I think its been widely thought in by many that hardwick is just a coach. I hear a lot of disrespect about his coaching strategies I guess. I would think that the tiges are reconsidering their moves.

also the players & most likely the club, got ahead of themselves after last year. but that has happened to a lot of teams in the last 4 years. ... but that is the coaches job, to makesure that doesn't occur.

different mark williams - ours is a vfl coach, tigers' assistant / shiel's potential father-in-law is the mad dude out of port adelaide (and brisbane bears, and collingwood).

very interesting what's happening at gws at the moment

ah, of course... now it all makes sense.

Who did Dom live with back in Sydney? Might help us work out who he was closest to at the club.

If Shiel was interested in us after LAST year, you'd think he'd be even more interested now. Things must be toxic at that club. Imagine growing up wanting to play AFL, then end up performing in front of 5000 person crowds for half your playing life.

I think there's an interview on the GWS website where he said he lived with Tom Scully. Remember thinking that might not do us any favours but if it's true that he was genuinely interested in us last year then all good.

I would love to get this bloke. Was hoping like mad we could snaffle him last year although rapt with what we got instead. Love his acceleration, clean hands & willingness to run.

A midfield based around he, Tyson & Viney.......................

A bloke involved at hawthorn said they inquired and were told we had offered an attractive 4 year deal and he was very interested but GWS weren't happy with it, they felt they would lose Tyson at some stage anyway and I actually think we got the better of the two players anyway.

Would love Shiel this time around though.

Richmond offered a decent contract last year. They'll be willing to part with pick 8 and someone like Vickery for Shiel and pick 30. Be surprised if he's not in yellow & black.

Why Richmond? I think we're more likely to get him than Richmond. We'll probably have a better pick than them and we can offer a larger contract too.

Add the sleekness of Salem, Toumpas, JKH and you're cookin'. You've also got that bloke Jones for a few more seasons yet too.

Much as Sheil would be a good addition to our midfield structure, I feel that adding Jeremy Cameron to our forward line would be of much more benefit to the Club going forward. Our midfield has shown massive improvement this year with Tyson, Vince and Viney, bolstering it and the option of securing the best forwardline in the league should be pursued as a priority. Our midfield will continue to improve as Salem, Toumpas, Mitchie, etc get a few games under their belt.

I would agree if it was a choice between Cameron or Shiel and the cost was the same. However if you could get Shiel you would still have salary cap room for another quality mid. Whichever club gets Cameron will also have to hand over more in draft picks and/or a required player.

The game is about mids. We need to get a top 4 quality midfield in place. That and a sound defence will finals matches

Tell me why they wouldn't be autocol.. The main reason would be also that Mark Williams coached him in his first year aswell. Most of the time its always handy where there have been connections along the line. Its makes a big difference.

In saying that we have Dom who could work as a handy recruiter for us.

While I agree with parts of this, I do think that having a quality forward line goes a long way to how you go in the finals. Look at Hawthorn: they won the grand final on the back of Gunston, who was there third best tall forward (after Buddy and Roughead).

You can also look at Geelong, who won most recently largely due to Tom Hawkins coming of age after Podsiadly went down.

Sydney have shown that it is possible to win premierships with a strong midfield and an average forward line, but I think if you can have a potent attack your chances of winning it all skyrocket.

Don't know who would want Vickery but don't think GWS need another tall forward anyway even if they loose Cameron. What else have the Tiges got.

I'm just suggesting it's going to be an offer like that. GWS want older talent, and I don't think any clubs will want to drop a low low pick for him. We got lucky that we got pick 9 back for Tyson, but GWS don't have the mid first round selection this year. They'll want a pick 3,4,5 for him but I think they'll settle for a pick 10 for an older sweetener.

My statement of I'll be surprised if he isn't in yellow and black was a bit outlandish, it should've said IF he moves, I would say Richmond would be the frontrunners.

Are you sure that's still correct? It was when Williams was at GWS, meaning his daughter was also in Sydney for much of her time, but a couple of years have passed since then...

I actually recall hearing she'd moved on to another AFL player.

Not sure if the source was any good though.

I don't think GWS will be looking for "sweeteners" unless they are pick upgrades.

Remember they still need to trim their list, and now have added on junk like Josh Hunt and Jed Lamb, giving them less room to move.

Chucking in a mature spud would be a negative for them.

And while GWS don't have a mid-round compo pick, they will have an end-of-1st-round compo pick, sitting about pick 20.

I'd give up pick 3/4 and our 3rd rounder for Tomlinson/Shiel and 20, for example.

You'd give up picks 3 and 4, just to clarify? Or pick 3 or possibly 4?

I wouldn't give up 2 high draft picks for those 2 players. Shiel, yes.. In a heart beat for mine. Tomlinson, no.. Not even nearly, done not a lot.

I think we'll keep Frawley.

I just don't know where our pick will lie.

But I'd trade pick 3 or 4 for Shiel or Tomlinson or whoever Roos wants.

I'd also trade pick 3&4 for Shiel & Tomlinson.

Happy with either trade.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
