Simon Black Midfield Coach?

This week the Brisbane legend has all but confirmed this is his last year.

What's your thoughts on him as a possible midfield coach next year?

Should the much talked about "long shot" of Paul Roos as senior coach happen, I have a gut feeling Black might be one of the first calls he makes.

Although, even if Neeld (magically) stays in the job, surely he would be looking at bolstering/changing the midfield coaching setup.

I would have always liked Junior as a midfield coach, not just because he's former MFC, but because I believe he possesses the no-nonsense approach needed. Not 100% sure if he's contracted at GWS next year though.

Anyways, thoughts on Simon Black as midfield coach.... go.

Couldn't say before you can compare them in the same role with the same list, but clearly there needs to be changes.

Black is a massively respected football person and seemingly a smart operator though.

Does he have any coaching qualifications (a la Brad Green) or are you suggesting we get an untried midfield coach? Seem to recall you commenting we shouldn't ever get another untried coach, so shouldn't that "rule" carry over to our various line coaches? Besides, I would have thought Roos would try for Kirk ahead of Black... which will not happen because Roos won't be coming anyway.

I'm all in favour of getting some more champion players around the club.

Of course you have to work out if they have passion for coaching and talent in the form of communication and ideas but they also must have a real benefit to the players in terms of confidence.

I can't see how Matty Scarlett and Cam Mooney doing some part time mentoring of the bulldogs talls can be anything but a good thing.

So as our particular area of need is the midfield I'd be looking for a champion ex midfield to come in as midfield development coach. Two who will likely retire this year are Black and Jude Bolton and both would be perfect to replace one of Royal/Greaves and have some star power impact. Both are super hard working and diligent as well.

Any ex player who understands what is required for a modern day midfield is fine by me. For a bloke like Toumpass to have Simon Black telling you what to do would do wonders for him.

I don't think ideas per se. They are more the senior coaches domain to structure the game plan. He needs to be an effective communicator and be able to explain and teach. As such an experienced stoppage player you'd think he'd have some of that down pat.

As much as Brisbane have done wrong of late they've also got Rich, Redden and Rockliff playing pretty good footy as young midfielder. How we'd love 3 like that to bring through with Jones.

Doesn't have to be mid field coach in his first year or 2. Could replace Aaron Greaves as development coach. I wouldn't place him in as line coach just yet IF we could find a more experienced candidate. But even if we couldn't, Black coudn't do a worse job than Brian Royal. The mid field is our biggest fail and he must have had a fair say in what he wants on the list management side, so he is as responsible as Neeld here. Need a new Board/President first, followed by experienced Coach as selected by new board/President, annointed by Peter Jackson (AFL).

This is another reason to move on Neeld ASAP. Craig in as caretaker.

The new line up must include all time greats who have succeeded at the highest level.

I believe this is our very last shot at getting this right. The consequences of not moving now and setting ourselves up for 2014 will be dire and most likely terminal (as in the club remaining in its present state as we know it).

I don't think we should get an untried SENIOR coach. That's the actual quote HT. Don't become one of those posters who deliberately misquote others to try and make a point mate.

Isn't Kirk already signed as an assistant at Freo?

I would have thought it was quite obvious I meant the senior coach as I then questioned whether that "rule" should carry over to the line coaches as well. I like Kirk too. Still think Black would be a great influence, and if you notice in the middle of my post I did say it could be to bolster the ranks.

I don't think a line coach needs to be that experienced IF there is an experienced senior coach. I think Leigh Brown is a good example of this, I think he's done a great job with the forward setup he's been given to work with, especially when you look at our inside 50/scoring effectiveness.

Agree we are in a big hole and we have frittered away 7 years but if we can add depth to our midfield we will improve and quickly.

Our forward line is good and our back line is good too but doesn't look like it at the moment cause the ball is down there for 90% of the bloody time.

With a new coach and more mids the future is allot brighter IMO.

If we were to get a rookie midfield coach, I'd vote for Cam Ling. However, would rather an experienced midfield coach, Ratten again maybe. We've all seen what a bunch of inexperienced coaches can do to a club that is poorly structured and lacking proven leaders.
