Sunday's crunch game between Brisbane Lions and Melbourne at the Gabba doubles as Brent Moloney's first meeting against his old side and the midfielder's 150th in the AFL.

I miss Beamer because I liked his normal, natural game and his passion for MFC - he should never have been placed in a situation where he had to leave.

With the probable exception of Jones, it's interesting that Moloney is possibly playing better for the Lions than any other Melbourne player is playing for the Demons. We're down to one clearance player and if Jones goes down then heaven help us.

The coaching staff last year trying to turn a 28 year old attacking midfielder into a defensive half forward was a poor decision. Much like trying to turn Rivers into a forward.

If you don't possess A grade players you definitely don't get rid of your B grade players. Or not try and keep them.

Free agency should give the lower placed teams a chance to fast track to be a better performing team. So far the opposite has been the case for our club. Sylvia may well be on the move at seasons end - which will no doubt please the Sylvia haters. Frawley could ask for a move even though he is contracted.

We could end up with many of our experienced players being rejects from other clubs.

I miss Beamer because I liked his normal, natural game and his passion for MFC - he should never have been placed in a situation where he had to leave.

Is that his natural game to not chase defensively or play with any accountability? His passion was all chest pumping and little substance. I don't miss him at all.

I don't have an ill will towards him but I can't say I miss him - he was the epitome of the Bailey years. Could look a million bucks against horrible opposition and went completely missing against any team that was half competent.

That is just not true Gonzo. For instance, Moloney averaged 19 possessions in our losses in 2011. Which was close enough to our best average for any of our players in those losses. Think Jones averaged 20 or 21 in those same losses. Completely missing? Don't think so.

The brutal truth is that none of our players have stood up consistently in all our losses from 2007 - 2012. None of them. Jones did ok last year in our big losses.

I'm constantly astonished that this vital piece of information is ignored.

When Geelong won their premerships I listened to a smart ass reporter ask him if he regretted moving - I respected Beamer immediately for his quick response (which was a resounding no).

Its a shame things didnt work out: he went from such a great player to no effort.

I think Stef Martin could be included on the good books PJ, however, in any case, the loss of the players you named doesn't say much for the MFC hierarchy's decision making!

Do you mean the situation where he had to learn the defensive side of his game, so he could play both ways and make him a more rounded player?

Yeah, I saw his talent. He gave his all downhill and put in for the club and ran a couple of boxing camps at his beloved 'Bool to fasttrack and toughen some kids up.

Ask yourself how he lead by example against the decent midfields...perhaps that's the point you're making Hardnut re: why his game went south - being asked to lead by example?

I'm by no means calling him a great player - he's not. But it should be acknowledged that we've only got one effective clearance player on our list right now.

So it was Moloney bombing it forward or the opposition gets it (if Jones doesn't get it)

And because of our poor defensive skills, if the opposition win more of the clearances, we get punished - often severely. I could always see his value, even though he was never a great user of the ball.

As I said, if Jones goes down, who's our next best clearance player? Right now?

Sometimes in life you just have to take the talents of an individual who believes in you (in this case the Club) and use them, rather than just dump the individual because they aren't perfect - the AFL is full of players in history who fit that category and yet their coaches got the best from them.
