As I've said before this practice has been going on since the year dot. It doesn't suddenly become tanking because the AFL introduce a priority pick! Also forfeiting a game would involve not fielding a side, at least thats my understanding of the word. Just more sensationalist terminology

Dimwit congratulated the club on sticking to its guns re list experimentation.

Its all about the CC comments....

They've committed themselves to a full investigation.

Even from the time they present their preliminary findings it could take weeks to finish things off. First the parties have to agree the facts ie on this date he said this etc; then they have to agree or disagree on the conclusions from these facts ie this means/doesn't meantanking; then they've got to agree/disagree the penalty , if any. It won't be just a matter of the AFL saying we conclude x and us saying we don't accept x.

Unfortunately even if we escape sanctions , the AFL are going to have to report in enough detail to justify all the time and effort they've put into it - and to justify all the years they let other teams take advantage of the rules.

The AFL has created a monster ..... and its hard to see them tying it up without weeks and weeks of to'ing and fro'ing (with the media standing beside the shredder trying to pick up few scraps of info!)

I'm just pleased we have signalled again that we are going to fight to preserve our integrity.

Don't hold your breath for clean quick solution ( unless they've been feeding us drafts for weeks already - which seems unlikely)

Our hopefull speedy resolution to the allegations looks like taking a hit with Adrian Anderson resigning. Can just see it now, another Operations Manager stepping in throwing his weight around, and having to review all information at hand before no doubt referring to AFL Commitee.

My guess is we'll be lucky to have an outcome before NAB cup starts.

Jman, by all accounts Angry Anderson will be around for a while (some say March, but I doubt that long)

AFL is just draging it out for as long as they can so they can say : We wanted to get this right to put this to bed for good and the MFC is not guilty of Tanking.

We take the integrity of our game very serious.

We want to thank MFC for being very open through the whole saga.

This investigation started back in july/august didn't it? if they were ever going to find any evidence of us allegedy tanking (or forfeiting games as CW describes it) then surely they would've found something by now!?

Everything I heard Angry say, in some of his interviews today, referred to the importance of "maintaining the integrity" of the game, and how the Melbourne tanking investigation was incomplete and needed time to reach its conclusion unimpeded.

It sounds highly unlikely we will get off with "no charges to answer". (afl know they need to act in response to the huge attention on this issue, and there will be destructive attacks on the AFL and their governance primarily by media and therefore the afl followers, if there is not what is deemed adequate penalties.

You heard what you wanted to hear, Anderson did not commit either way and it was more a point of saying we will not be rushed in any way and basically media can bleat all they like it wont fast track the investigation

No, I didn't want to hear this, but am concerned that, that was the message. I hope YOU are right!

I'm confident that we'll escape any sort of penalty or sanctions . If that happens it then begs the question - "How and why did it take well over 4 months to come to this conclusion?" (McLean was on 'OTC' in late July IIRC) . We can only be found guilty of preparing for the next season (or seasons) . And that is not match fixing . If we do receive penalties it has to be for match fixing . What, are they going to take a draft pick off us because Paul Johnson played on Nathan Brown ? It can't stick , it just can't .

I reckon what's happened is that the investigators could have closed the 'Case' a number of times but then another little 'titbit' would surface - they'd spend another week or 3 'Investigating' that until another little 'titbit' would surface . And so on and so forth .

They've got nothing of any substance and their attitude might be to keep looking until they find something . Maybe the investigators haven't realised that if the smoking gun was there, they should have uncovered it by now . Maybe it's just plain stubbornness on their part . Trying (in vain) to justify their own involvement in this farce .

Edit : The other thing to remember is that if we receive sanctions for reasons other than match fixing, then that will impact on what is 'Allowable' for clubs in the future (on match days) . I reckon that is where they've reached an impasse . Many of us have been focusing on what 'Other' clubs have done in the past, but it's what clubs can do in the future that's at stake here . The AFL will end up making a rod for it's own back if they're not careful .

It's match fixing or nothing .

What are they going to charge the club with??

According to your stance WYL, it would be tanking. Or has it changed?

You've always maintained we're guilty and should take whatever form of sanctions that come our way.

Have you changed your position on this?

No i have never said we are guilty at all.

I am glad the investigation is taking place because i want the issue put to bed forever.

If the club is found guilty then yes we take the wack.

But i don't think we will be charged because Bailey did not tell the players to back off.

I hope that is clear for you Steve.

Yes we spent 2 years chasing only 4 wins per year but with the rules the way they were was it against the rules?

I doubt it.

I have not changed my stance McQueen.

I have no doubt we were tanking in the later part of the 2009 season

I was at that Richmond game with a couple of Tiger supporter friends

There is no doubt in their minds or mine that the MFC FD did everything they could in the last quarter to not win.

I don't believe they told players not to win but the moves that day were blatantly obvious.

Now was it any worse than Carlton in the K Cup ? No

Was it any worse than other clubs in that period? No

None the less in my mind we tanked.

If the Dees were tanking in 2009 then this pre-supposes:

a) we were good enough 'manipulate' a result (hey guys lets not try too hard today we don't want to win); and,

B) that in 2010, 2011 and 2012 we would all of a sudden win lots of games because we were 'trying'

Neither happened.

Critics ignore one thing. We were a shiite football team. We were soft and frankly pretty useless. We have beaten only 2 Vic teams since 2007!!!

Thats what the PP was for. To assist crap footy teams to 'get back on their feet'.

In the history of the PP only 2 teams have ever won 5 games in a year - both teams were Melbourne (2003, 2007) - to deny themselves a PP. In other words whenever a PP has been a possibility EVERY other team has secured a PP. We have been 'denied' 2 PPicks.

I will really enjoy our climb back up the ladder. Let's hope we all have long memories about those who were kicking us while we are down. There are plenty of them.

Saying we were crap in 2009 is correct but that does not mean we did not manipulate things in the last quarter of a game.

Jnr were you at the Richmond game in 2009?

You would have to be blind to not notice the moves that were made that enabled us to lose after the siren.

The end of that season we set our "culture" in concrete

The MFC should never ever again do anything other than try 100% to win every game.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind being interviewed by Clothier and Haddad, bring 'em on, sunshine.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
