I know actions speak louder than words, but was impressed with his presser. Good head on his shoulders and speaks really well.

Looking forward to seeing how goes on the park next season.

Studying law I think, he may end up working with rampaging Ray Finklestein post career.

Birchall never had the burden of expectation as being a future champion KPF...

What's that got to do with courage in the air, or putting your body on the line ? It didn't effect Riewoldt. There's no doubt that courage can be improved and I hope he works very hard on this aspect of his play. Some players naturally have it and some have to work hard at it. It has nothing to do with your draft pick number.

The expectation of Watts was to be that pack splitting monster we all dreamt about - not the rebounding defender he's basically playing now. For that reason, JW will always be more closely scrutinised for his efforts in the air or over the ball. Birchall has never had that.

Watts has had courageous plays. I don't believe it's a problem with his ticker but more one of confidence.

If you want to settle and say good things about Watts then go ahead but as far as I am concerned he has not nearly performed well enough to warrant him being taken at #1 over his 4 years so far.

We have been ladder dwellers for half a decade.

I dispute the idea that Watts lacks courage in the air, or courage full stop.

He was one of the best intercept marks in the league last year and that sort of mark requires two types of courage. One, it can mean dropping into a hole or going back with the flight (which he didn't shy away from) and risks getting collected.

Two, as he and the club pointed out several times he was rarely used as a spare man, he almost always had a man to cover. leaving your man to attempt an intercept mark takes courage because it is very risky and can make a player look foolish when their opponent gets an easy kick in the forward line because they have been left free.

This site seems to be divided between Watts supporters and Watts bashers.

Fact is he led the league in intercepts in the 2 month period he was playing without injury last season.

Fact is he has taken more marks kicks and Handballs so far in his carreer than Natanui and Hurley,who he is constantly compared to.

Fact is he is a year youngerthan both of them, and infinitely more skilled.

As an effectively 3rd year player he is the second most efficient by foot at the whole club.

He will fill out, only still a kid really.

Lastly, he is here to stay so get used to it , all you so called supporters of the Melbourne football club.

Maybe its a good thing that his every action is so closely analysed. It saves others from scrutiny and can provide an invaluable feedback tool or alternatively can be used as a benchmark tool.

I just like the kid and think that despite the heightened expectation and perhaps even false assessment he is in fact beginning to look like a real asset. I hope we can use his skill and that other teamates can benefit from his accumulation and distribution, and that the coaches can keep him motivated to continue.

I am a fence sitter (again!!!) on the Watts issue - too young for me to call yet, can see the deficiencies, can't guarantee they will go away, hope they do. But ......................

One thing Neeld has made abundantly clear is that no-one is here to stay and the players better get used to it. He is a man of limited patience and it is even more limited if you dont display certain attributes that are vitally important to him.

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals.     The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm.
