Remember 2-3 years ago the ball would often come streaming through the middle & a Colin Sylvia or equivilent would look up about to kick the ball...AND THE 50 METRE ARC WOULD BE A VACANT LOT!!! & they would have to kick sideways or backwards.

Just genuinely interested as to people's feelings on what the ruck division will look like in 2013 with the list as it stands (ie no Gumby or Pedersen), assuming that all are healthy.

I think most of us thought that Dawes would ruck in some capacity, and I was surprised that appears to have been completely ruled out. Clark can ruck, but yeah, you don't want him to if at all possible since he's so dangerous up forward (and, as I said, they might want to take a softly softly approach to his injury).

That to me seems to indicate that another player (Gawn, Spencer, Martin) will need to come in to take secondary ruck duties. Thankfully all three are tall or reasonably athletic i.e. suited to the new rules.

I take solace from the fact that in 2011 before he fractured a bone in his hand and missed two months he averaged 16 disposals, 5 marks, nearly 2 goals and 83 ranking points per game from CHF. They were very good figures for a young power forward not yet in his prime.

In fact, he's played roughly the same amount of games as Hurley with virtually identical numbers. And we all know how Hurley is publicly perceived. With over a week to go of TW we're still well positioned to make another tactical move or two.

Interesting comparison. Particularly the versatility of Dawes - hitouts, tackles and even goals scored. Looks good for us.

Can't wait to see him in the red and blue. It's fantastic that we have Neeld coaching, who will know how to get the best out of him. As well as that it is unique that we have a guy coaching who played with him too, and I reckon Brown will be able to provide an insight into Dawes' strengths and weaknesses that Neeld doesn't have.

I totally believe we have the guys that can bring out the best in him on the field.

Martin studying law as well so if he stays he will no doubt talk to Dawes quite a bit and we can only hope the conversation turns to training.

I think Chris Dawes is still overseas but can we get a photo of him in a MFC jumper asap.

A more reliable kick than Hurley too.

Can all you Dawes haters not see that him and Cloke was probably the most potent Forward duo in 2010 and I'm sure you all would have only dreamed to have him back then.

Then the spuds moved him into a backup ruck role that he could not play and thereafter fell out of form. If we plonk Dawes in the square and have Clark crashing packs, and perhaps Pederson we will have 3 100kg monsters that are impossible to match up on. Because not only are they monsters, they are also have great agility. How easy is Howe gonna find it to take hangers when the 3 best defenders are all preoccupied with monsters! And then we have a 17 year old 195cm 95kg on the way.

Once the midfield is fixed and is able to give these guys enough opportunites, look out!

Sometimes I wonder if all the Dawes bashes on here are infultrator Bulldogs supporters that are cut because a week ago they thought he was theirs!

As I mentioned in another post, just maybe Jamar could feature in a late trade, somewhere?? I certainly see Martin as providing more options and contributions around the ground than TGR. And IF we snag Pedersen, and Gawnius Maximus pulls up well then one will have to go. I feel sorry for Spencil as he surely will be redundant (if Pedersen gets to us.)

Do you think that a second preseason under Missen / Craig may bring him up to pace?

Somebody with better understanding of exercise physiology than I mentioned, I cant remember regarding whom, (maybe Gysberts) , that there is a parameter that can be measured to predict the ability of humans to reach certain fitness goals. Hopefully that test will have been run past all the players who struggled last preseason, if not the whole list.

Ultimately, I think Neeld will look to a mobile ruckman. That's where the game is going. Martin fits that bill.

Having said all that, both Spencer and Gawn's height would be an attraction. The advantage of being that tall is obvious. I think we'll certainly keep both, but can see one being pushed out long term.

I, for one, never thought Dawes was intended to do any ruck duties. Martin has been doing it and will do it if he is kept. Pedersen will if we ever get that deal through. Dawes is our FF for the foreseeable future.

As for Gawn, Spencer and Martin they are not good enough as a back-up at this stage. Martin and Spencer need first ruck as they are hopeless in the forward line (which is where a back-up ruck will spend most of their time) and Gawn should have no pressure to do anything next year other than get through a year of Casey unscathed.

This is why I want Pedersen - he can actually play a bit as a fwd and can give Jamar a chop-out.

I dont think the new ruck rules will make all that much difference to Jamars worth to our side. He's always been a center bounce specialist anyway, so the enw rules wont effect him too much there.

Neeld and the team must be reassessing our ruck strengths based on the changes to the rules, they must be thinking about Jamars lack of spring and what that will do to our chances of getting first hand on the ball. These changes may actually generate some interest in Martin as the rule change will probably suit him. As for Martins fitness, if I recall correctly he used to be a basketballer who came to football later in life, i would think then his best is yet to come, give him a good preseason, fewer injuries and do a dawes with him, i.e. play him in one spot then I think he could flourish.

I don't know about anybody on here but I was at the Geelong game in 2011 when we go absolutely smashed by 160 point, I was very embarrassed to be wearing my demons Jummper that day.

I thought 2012 was going to be a better season, new coaching stuff, new big key forward, Boy was I wrong.

Lost a lot of faith in this club after this season considering we where all told this rebuild stage was only going to take 4 seasons, we'll 6 seasons has past since we have played finals and I'm sick a tired of my geelong friend labing it up In there success.

what a hate the most is Richmond supporter getting all cocky because they seem to think there better then us know even though we where meant to be 2 year a head of them in our rebuild stage.

I just want to go to a game and watch our club play some good competitive football.

Interesting to watch the highlights of Dawes on MFC website. The number of goals he kicked from ground level, I know it was obviously a small sample size but another string he hopefully brings to the team for a tall bloke.
