The Ideal Trade Month

With the October trade month commencing on Monday, what is the best outcome.

For me its starts with the Father and son bidding with Jack Viney coming to us for our second round pick. I had been a get Hogan fan until the Butcher rumors started to circulate so for me Butcher would be a great pick up.

Here is my Ideal Trade week and I'm trying to be fair with the trades

As Mentioned Viney for Second round pick

Butcher and Ports Pick 7 to Melbourne for pick 4 and 13

Wellingham and Pies Third Round for our third round pick and Martin

Byrnes and Knights FA

Koby Stevens Pick 3 in the Pre-Season Draft

Petterd and our 4th rd pick to Richmond for their second Round Pick

A bidding war between clubs for Rivers and Moloney resulting in us securing 2 further second round picks rather than losing them as free agents

Cook to Carlton for third round pick on trade to North for Pederson

Gysberts to Geelong for second round pick.

We get Butcher, Pick 7, Wellingham, Byrnes, Knights, Stevens, Pederson and three 2nd round picks, Viney

We lose Pick 4 and 13, Our second round pick(Viney), Moloney, Rivers, Petterd, Gysberts, Martin and Cook, our fourth round pick

This leaves us with Picks 3, 7 and three second round picks in the National draft big month meaning we will turn over 12-13 players.

If we pick up Byrnes and Knights as FAs, that would probably cancel out losing Riv and Beamer as FAs. ie. no second round picks for Riv and Beamer. That's roughly the way the AFLs FA points system works.

I can't help but wonder why Port are considering trading Butcher. He was seen as the future of their forward line less than 12 mths ago. I'm thinking perhaps his body is shot somehow. No doubt, our medicos will do their due diligence and test him out first. We don't have a great track record with managing chronically injured players. If not, Hogan sounds like a good option.

Other than that, I really like your thinking DrD.

No A-graders there, DrD.

In that case I would want to keep 3, 4 and 13.

If we pick up 4/5 of Wellingham, Stevens, Knights, Byrnes, Butcher, Pedersen/Casboult, Jacobs, Pearce, or Caddy AND keep 3, 4, and 13 then that would be a good trade week.

None of those players should be mentioned in the same sentence as Pick 3 or 4.

We would have a very good trade week if we got Hogan, 3, 13, Viney and 4 or 5 pros mentioned above.

Depending on how the points system works...

It is on wage and age apparently (source: recent Age article quoting Andersen).

So if we lost Bate, Rivers, and Moloney and it added up to 11 points and we got 2 FAs at 6 points we would (presumably) get 1 pick at Band 1 compensation which would be either be Pick 5 or middle of the first round (haven't seen that cleared up yet).

Geez,

I thought all this was getting confusing.

But that really cleared it up for me. .......NOT

You've got to have a degree in stupidity to come up with a system like that.

Who was it invented by Anderson or Duckworth?.

I wish RPFC, I think it's naive to think we'll lose 3 players only one of which impacted our team this year in Rivers, and than pick up 2 players in return and expect a first round pick for it. We'll be lucky to get a band 2 second round pick for those players but a mid 2nd round or 3rd round wouldn't shock.

Why would clubs trade for players they could pick up for nothing as free agents?

I think he may be implying that we should match the FA offers to force trades not realising though that Rivers is unrestricted. I may be wrong.

that's looks like a closing down sale. I don't understand why you are looking to offload youth so cheaply.

We need to replace blokes like Dunn, Bate, Green, Moloney, Petterd, Rivers, with blokes who are up to it.

Can't believe you would give Cook away for a 3rd round pick and Gysberts for a 2nd round pick.

That to me is their current value, both spent the year at Casey, with cook bring dropped to the vfl reserves.

Nice effort, dr. Just to nitpick, I'd leave pick 4 out of a Butcher deal. We'd be madder than Brynne Edelsten to trade Gysberts for Gellong's second rounder (34-40ish) and we'd be lucky to get anything more than the world's second-largest ball of twine in return for Cook. Your Wellingham-Martin deal is the most realistic proposal regarding those players I've seen on this site.

i'm happy to show a little more patience....gysberts had ankle issues and broken jaw this year....Cook is skinny as a rake…plus only a 2nd year player. Watts has taken three years to show a little.

We should be looking at blokes like Sylvia, Morton, Dunn, Bate, etc…they've had enough time.

I don't know if it naivete. It's more improbable and unlikely but because it is a 'points' system one could lose three middling players, gain two low end players and end up with higher compensation.

I honestly don't know why people bother with these scenarios. If you're going to go to the effort to make them, surely you'd at least make them plausible - otherwise, what's the point?

We don't start match threads every week with: "The Ideal Game" and continue to list how we'll dominate each and every 5 minutes period of the game to end up 200 point winners.

Further, if you're not going to be plausible then why aim low? Why settle for Pederson for Cook when we could get Judd/Ablett/Selwood/Franklin/Rioli for Moloney?

glad you could get off your perch in your ivory tower to tell us that.

Why on earth would you want to trade the only decent player on the list.

i did say 'look at'...Mark Neeld has gone public about Col's form earlier this season.

some of cols actions need to be looked at....ie., joking around with opposition players after a heavy loss.

Or we could get rid of Cook and not have to wait 3 years for him to show anything. Waiting is [censored] and we should be drafting and trading for players who can have impacts straight away.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
