The Free Agency/Trade/Draft Rumour File

Featured Replies

I suspect people in this forum are confusing supporter loyalty with footballer loyalty. Why would anyone come to Melbourne, why did Garry A go to Gold coast, Scully to GWS or McDonald go to GWS, Money and opportunity. That is what Melbourne offers, there are some good players who cannot get a regular game with their clubs who are not prepared to sit on the sidelines while they get older and their dreams pass. Melbourne will get players, it may not be the side that some of these players would have chosen with their first pick, but it maybe the club that provides them with the best opportunities and financial reward. GA got 25 votes playing in dare i say a side worse than we were this year, that may appeal to some. Who knows maybe Swan from the woods will be a bit [censored] that those two games he was suspended in may have cost him another brownlow and that playing with melbourne may mean he does not have beams and others taking votes away from him. This draft is about picking up the best players we can now through FA and trading so that we save our draft picks for new or high value talent. It is also a time to clean house a little, in doing so it puts the players on notice that they must lift their intensity if they want to continue to play AFL football, cause if they get dumped by Melbourne they are unlikely to be wanted by too many other sides.

heard Port are talking to victorian clubs about butcher, interesting 12 months ago they would of laughed in the face of any club going near him, go home factor possibly but could it be more?

intresting Nudge said in the other thread that we were also looking at ben warren. i heard that today aswell and i forgot to mention it because i dont rate him at all. good VFL player but he is ricky petterd all over again.

Scott Gumbleton is an intresting one. we along with about 7 other clubs have sought him out. but we are really getting into his manager about him.

We are still chasing a key forward and Pederson and Gumbleton are two that have come into contention. Watch this space!

Also former eagle Ashley Hansen has come into consideration for a rookie list spot on the dees as for insurance.. Hansen had a great year in the WAFL kicking over 50 goals this year. Was a dee supporter too!

Really stood out in WAFL this year Swan Districts relied on him a lot,(thing WA Demon is a Swans fan) had issues with his hamstring through the season. AFL days past him by IMO

The rumor about Hansen was a joke, wouldn't want to loose him from swans too!

He's had a lot of back issues...which can ruin a career not to mention life after football as well. Im sure the medicos would check this out well and truly before pursuing? What we DONT need is another injured player who cant develop.

Why would the MFC look seriously at a injury prone DUD like Gumbleton? If The Scum thought he was any good they would offer him more than a 1 year deal. We don't need this hack at our club. Nuff said.

This x 100

This makes the compensation easier to understand.

"As for compensation, Anderson says in the document: ''We confirm that the compensation formula will produce a points rating for players based on two factors: 1) new contract of the free agent and 2) age of the free agent.

''Draft picks will be allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period. Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places: first round, end first round, second round, end of second round and third round.''

Ok, I pretty much said there would be 'points' system.

Show me some love.

So basically we want Moloney and Rivers (if he goes) to be greedy as hell and take big offers...go to Port mate

I was told sometime back that Malthouse, Cloke and Goddard are headed to the Blues....... at the time I disregarded the rumour.... But it seems that a part of it has come true and the second part is being openly talked about as true......

The closer we get to the end of the year.... The more it seems these rumours may actually happen...... How would the Blues fit both Cloke and Goddard in there salary cap? Who knows.... Maybe they plan to drop a few from their list.....

All I can hope is that MFC are ready to scoop up some of the remaining players from this fall out....

I thought they'red be fallout as well if Cloke went blue, but now Scotland has apparently signed, so I'm wondering that if these guys who were not contracted are signing, does this mean Cloke is staying put?

I'd do a trade in a second, Butcher for Cook.

Word I have is that the Dee's have contacted Hamish McIntosh well before the Cats. McIntosh on cats radar.

If there's any truth in the rumour of Martin leaving then I consider HM to be a good replacement and possibly a better first ruck than Jamar.

Morton for Albett?

No deal. Not attractive enuf. ABLETT and H Bennell would clinch the deal.

Ok , I love you.

Yes. Word out is that if Goddard goes, Saints won't take a FA, which will maximise their compo pick. That pick would probably be as high as it goes which is round 1 pick.

Therefore if you are losing a star player for big bucks to another club, your best pick will come if you don't get any FA's into your club that year. If we lose Beamer and say Rivers and then get say Byrnes and Russell, our compo is diluted.

Could push our pick 13 to pick 14 :(

No it doesn't affect your current picks. It will be an extra pick. They haven't really explained if the highest pick you can get is mid first round or after your first round pick. There is a big difference.

Essendon will have an abundance of quality tall forwards; Daniher, Crameri and Hurley. There is no room for Gumbleton in that team I think he is a reasonable player, after Clark was injured we had Rivers, Garland and Sellar as our forward targets Gumby is far superior to any of those kicked 4 goals against Hawthorn in a drubbing which is a fair effort.

if we could pull that off id be wrapped LOL

Would love to snare Pearce and Butcher from PA How about they get Martin, Petterd and pick 23

We need pick 23 for JV.

BUT...

If you lose two at Band 2 and gain one at Band 5 you will be concentrating your pick value.

Example:

Lose two players at Band 2 and do not sign anyone - gain 2 picks at Band 2.

Lose two players at Band 2 and sign one player at Band 5 - gain one pick on the points system (8 points minus 1 point = 1st Band compensation).

So, can someone who knows the Free Agency Rules better than I do clarify this for me?

Under free agency rules, Goddard can only submit his best offer from a rival club for the Saints to match.

Read more: http://www.theage.co...l#ixzz27d0yMajN

Ok,... So hypothetically, Essendon could offer Goddard say $800k for 3 years and Goddard might want to go to Essendon. But MFC could put an offer down of $810k for 3 years.... and he doesn't want to go to us... that statement indicates that Goddard has to place the best offer, not his preferred destination for the Saints to match.

Does that sound a bit odd to people? or has Jon Pierek misinterpretted things? Surely the interpretation as it's described would mean that Freo can't be discounted by those players not wanting to move West, especially if they have the coin to safely put in the best offer?

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
