At a rough estimate based on 2012 form, Hogan would be likely top 4 next year alongside Martin, Kelly, and Billings, who unlike the other three is not eligible for mini-draft selection.

Hogan stands out cos he's not a mid - he's a giant key forward built like a brick outhouse.

If we do get him in the next few weeks, does he stay on WA in 2013 to continue schooling or does he move to Victoria straight away?

Posted

Hogan is meant to be in the top 4 next years draft, so how is it that we want to pay pick 3 (already overs) and 13 when he cant play for a year.

I cannot see the logic behind it, we payed pick 12 for Clark who was a ready made taller version of Hogan.

Please do not take him with 2 first rounders, draft Toumpas/Garlett instead as they will have a bigger impact and worry about a Gorilla via Dawes or future drafts.

This price is almost as ludicrous as GC wanting 2 first round picks for Caddy

If we give up picks #3 and #13 as part of this deal, GWS has 1,2,3,12 and 13. Thats five more draftees into the club (or five new players if they trade any picks which is doubtful). If they have any other picks we should be asking for them as well. We need to be able to bring in new players and getting more picks is a useful way to be able to do this.

So, why dont we also ask for another later pick - its useless to them anyway - they cant use it. Gives us more ammunition to bring in those guys that dont cost much (i.e. Ray, Dawes, White?, etc).

So IF #13 is on the table, ask for Hogan, Barry, #20 and one more pick.

pick 3 + pick 13 for Hogan + pick 20 + Dom Barry.

Assuming Hogan is worth pick 3, then is Dom Barry worth a 7 place downgrade (13th to 20th) in the first round?

I'm happy to assume the FD and MN know a good deal for the MFC.

From Knightmare on Big footy

"#66 Port Adelaide – Dominic Barry (NT)

Height: 183cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 07/03/1994

Recruited from: North Ballarat Rebels

Style:

Player comparison:

Range: 30-rookie

Profile: Very quick outside midfielder with a good combination of speed and endurance. Has a real slippery, evasiveness to him and has really nice agility. The speed is the real feature of his game and both ways it can be a real feature whether it be with his chasing or offensive running when he can get into space. His numbers are very solid for a player of his type but to improve will need to develop some more consistency in his ball use.

Pick 24 they also have. Maybe our pick 45 for their 24.

We should ask for Jed Anderson instead of Barry. Looking at phantom drafts Jed is meant to be a late first rounder/early 2nd rounder while Barry is meant to be a deep into the 4th round player.

What number does anyone think Hogan would go at if he was in this draft?

3 and 13 when he is not even number 1 in Mini Draft is not overs?

Forget there is any such thing as a mini draft.

GWS rate Martin as 2nd best available or better and we rate Hogan as 3rd or better.

I guess being a Melbourne supporter, hearing "investing in this kid for the future" doesn't strike confidence into me.

Cale Morton was meant to be the next Adam Goodes

We are not negotiating hard enough is the point. We should put pick 3 on the table and they can take it or leave it.

I would love to see a team like Bulldogs pay overs for this pick..

I would much prefer use pick 3 on Jake Stringer and pick 13 on Garlett then throw them both onto Hogan.

Maybe the club wants a 10 year hulking FF...

You know this for a fact? Are you privee to what is going on behind closed doors?

Anyway, in the wash-up, what you or I or anyone else say means nothing... the club will make the choices it sees fit to make. They did well to get Viney to 26 when he could just as easily have gone for 3. The club has obviously entered an agreement with GC to get that done and so if that means we are getting Hogan for what is essentially pick 13 as well as Barry and pick 20 for pick 26, then I have no issue with that at all.

10 years ago I would say that it would be worth it when FFs like Dunstall, Locket, Carey ect could kick bags of 10 but these days its more of an open game where teams need a range of players to be able to kick goals to mix it up more.

10 years ago 1 power forward > 2 goalkicking mids

now its the other way around.

We've noted your preference and thank you for it.

I don't know whether you or some others appreciate the value of a gun key forward. How many do you think are running around ? Hogan is a much better key forward prospect than Hurley. Hogan is 194cm and already 97 kg at 17. Wow. But importantly, he has pace, aggression, loves physical contact, is agile, a good field kick, a very good mark and doesn't look out of place running through the midfield.

He's exactly what we need. You win premierships with a guy like this and a stellar midfield. Pick 3 and 13 for Hogan, 20 and Barry is a win for this club. Hogan would be a top 5 selection next year, but what is attractive is that we make certain of getting our man and have the opportunity to develop him for a year. He'll debut as a 19 year old and be ready to impact. I really like Darling, but Hogan is a rung above due to his size.

I'll be going to as many games at Casey next year as I can.

You can try to twist it like that if it makes you feel better.

In my eyes we can draft a combination of 2 of Toumpas/Stringer/Wines/Kennedy/Garlett or take Hogan who can't play for a year.

Id prefer the first option but that said see what happens, what Harrington said yesterday gave me the impression that the compo picks were off the table to be traded, then all this popped up so it could be just media spin again (the pick 13 part). They love making up rumors with our pick 13, first Caddy, then Dawes, now Hogan.

Is he playing for Casey? From what I heard is that he had planned on staying in WA next year.

A guy who cant play next year is NOT what exactly what we need. We need players who can step up straight away.

No, because we are a shot at the wooden spoon next year.

There is definitely more to this then meets the eye if pick 13 is involved. Possibly to do with Viney 2nd rounder or even a clause for GWS to leave Toumpas to our pick #4

No twisting required... Harrington already stated that they would have used pick 3 for Viney if it had been necessary, so if some sort of a deal hadn't been struck with the GCS then that is exactly what would have transpired. Yes the midfield is one of the areas we need to address, but if you become too focused on that, you tend to overlook the fact that our forward line is also sorely depleted.

As BH said, Hogan will have a year to develop and should hit the ground running in 2014... unless of course you think that investing in Hogan now will limit our chances of playing finals footy in 2013?

I think that a big body like Stringer and a classy quick mid like Garlett would add more. Remember that we have next years trade/draft period to also pickup a big Forward who could also start in 2014.

Boyd is in the draft and GWS wont take him as they already have Cameron and Patton. GC arn't looking for a power forward so if we can trade into a high enough pick we could possibly snare him their, and he is better then Hogan.

What is the point having Clark and Hogan in the forward line if we do not have enough sharp kicking skillful mids to get it down their and hit them on the [censored].

See what happens I guess, maybe it is just pick 3 for Hogan/pick20/Barry. We don't know what is going on behind those doors.

By the rules he can't step straight in. He cannot play for Melbourne next year Olisik so he will have no say whether we finish on the bottom or the top. Jesssssus

The only thing I care about is winning a flag. Hogan puts us significantly closer to that goal and waiting 1 year for a player that can help us win a flag in 5 years is a no brainer. Dangerfield went to the Crows at 17 and didn't play for a year. Do you think their supporters now care ?

It's not hard to pick up goal kicking mids. Sloane was a pick in the 40's, Beams 29, Sydney picked up Kennedy who couldn't get a regular game at Hawthorn, Kieran Jack was a rookie, Port got Brad Ebert in a trade, Shuey was pick 19, Rockliff was a rookie, etc. How easy do you think it is to get a top line power forward, such as Franklin, Brown in his heyday, Cloke at his best, the emerging Taylor Walker, Hawkins ?

And guess what ? Four of those 5 have premiership medallions hagning around their neck.

A couple of things. Can you guarantee we'll get Boyd in next year's draft ?

Both Boyd and Hogan are rated top 5 for next year's draft with Boyd closer to the pointy end, but you can't say right now that Boyd will be better than Hogan. Boyd is more your Lockett like FF and Hogan more your Carey type power CHF. Any club would be happy with either.

And yes, we do need mids with good footskills. I'd like to retain pick 4 and draft O'Rourke, assuming Toumpas has already gone. Viney, O'Rourke, Jones and a rejuvenated Trengove is a core that can develop very nicely. But there will also be other mids on our agenda with other picks over 20.

I am happy to agree to dis-agree on this one.

I hope we take O Rourke over Toumpas/Wines. Thinking about it more and watching some clips last night of the u18s I thought that he seemed to have more x-factor and ball-magnet ability.

The way he played was also a mixture of both inside/outside mid and the way he moved was really unpredictable. Out of the 3 I think he would be the best to shake a tag.

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
