Who should we pick up?

I don't want Melbourne to pick up just for the sake of picking up, we could use picks instead to develop.

So who do you guys think would be a good pickup or pickups

I think Cloke could be okay especially with Howe and Mitch Clarke supporting him.

Clinton Young looms as a good pick up for Melbourne if we can get him.

Lenny Hayes is a maybe only because of his age.

I'd pay for Caddy as i really really rate him.

Well Cloke is the obvious one. He would give us another tall, strong target in our fwd line and having him would take some pressure off of Clark as our sole big fwd. Cloke has had an off season, yet he has 45 goals (9th in comp), first in contested marks and fifth in marks inside 50 so even when he seems to be struggling he is still performing at a good standard! the only thing that would put me off of course is the money that he is asking :S

Koby Stevens from WCE would be handy too. he's a tough mid who just can't crack into their strong midfield and he would get greater opportunity if he came to us!

You're right about he could be ok, but we have a "war chest" for a reason, to pick up guns and i have watched him in his 2 games that he's played and doesnt like look a gun, he likes that he could be an ok player

Players will move clubs for more than just money - they'll move for more senior games (which equals more money, even if they were on the same contract).

Would like a big play for Caddy. Pick 12 + player? Not sure who.

Has Montagna signed? If not, maybe him as a FA. Maturity and leadership added to our midfield. Given that we will more than likely select young mids in the draft, experience from another club would be vey useful.

Worth noting that our needs may be influenced by who leaves the club (for whatever reason) at the end of the year. For example, if Beamer or Davey were earmarked to go, Neeld may want to look for an FA mid or 2, rather than Cloke.

Similarly if Rivers or Sylvia were to go, a similar replacement could be a trade or FA priority for Neeld. Not saying that I want these guys to come or go, just examples.

Clinton Young is a player who I'd look at.

Caddy would be a great get - and tough!

I don't know about Cloke, he is mentally a very fragile guy, not sure we need that.

Maybe I'd look at Josh Toy, seems on the outter up the coast and was a higly rated junior, not that highly rated means they make it, ie: Morton.

Out of all the players, Young improves our side the most - but Caddy going forward makes the most sense.

Montagna would be great, like supreme pickup.

If Sylvia goes I would be so angry, possibly the best player to walk through Melbourne's door right now.

Sylvia is a class player and i dont think that Sylvia had any discipline is his game. Colin was only getting over an injury in the first 9 rounds of the season.

It would be a shame if Rivers were to leave Melbourne because he is actually a pretty good player, but we would get a pretty good pick up for him.

I would think an at least 100 game player is needed to ad some experience to the list, mabee 2. But i think Cloke is to expencive, way to expencive. We should go after Boak only if we loose Maloney

Shannon Byrne or Jarrad Moore could be handy pick ups

As for the kids if we can get Caddy for #13 it would be better than a pick in the draft, as he is 2 years more advanced than this years crop. Even if he is unproven, was highly rated as a junior and would probably be rated just as high as pick #13 would be at this years draft. Just 2 years futher into the afl system.

Rookie list a multiple VFL / SANFL / WAFL Premership player, Someone who knows how to win, the winning mentality might rub off on the players. But are there any out there under say 27-28???

Both Shannon Byrne and Jarrard Moore would be useless pickups.

Josh Caddy:

He has flare, very tough at the footy with alot of grunt. Alot like Sylvia

I'm intrigued by Caddy but I haven't seen enough of him to make a call. King - what would he bring to our side? Would he be a better player at Melbourne? Does he suit a Neeld team?

He is tough as nails! I watched him in juniors and he was an inside/outside midfielder, capable of doing both.

He has shown this year that he can slot goals, which is a great sign, always room for mids who push foward.

He is a Neeld type player for sure and certain, Neeld would love this kid and I expect he'll chase him.

I think Caddy for 13 would be an absolute coup.

Clarke, Boak and Caddy seem the obvious ones to target.

That said, I reckon Daniel Pearce from Port would be a really good get for us running off half back.

Sorry maybe it's just me but I do not rate Pearce at all and hope we don't even consider him cant even give you a good reason why just looks like a player that sits back and waits for the hard work to be done!

Main areas I reckon we need to focus on targeting are.

* Key position forward.

* Small crumbing forward

* Inside midfielder & inside/outside midfielder

* Rebounding defender

Players I'd love to target in order of each position are.

Key forward: Travis Cloke, Scott Gumbleton, Shaun McKernan

Small crumbing forward: Jarred Moore, Shannon Byrnes, David Ellard

Inside midfielder: Travis Boak, Kobe Stevens, Adam Selwood

Inside/Outside midfielder: Josh Caddy, Leigh Montagna, Farren Ray

Rebounding Defender: Jordan Russell, David MacKay, Josh Toy

Edit: Forot about David MacKay so replaced Clinton Young with him as I think Young would be unlikely to move.

what's with all the Caddy love??? Seriously, he is doing stuff all in pretty much all of his games. He is definately not worth a first round pick the way he has played in his games to date. Massively overrated on here and in the AFL community.

Agree. I haven't see anyting in Caddy that really excites me. He doesn't impose himself enough on a game. He's not overly quick, has few tricks and is not a high possession gatherer. Didn't do much last night against the blues. Did nothing aginst us. We need speed speed and footballers with smarts. i.e Harvery Bennell.

I think that we need:

  • One or two small forwards and small defenders, seeing as we don't really have any currently. Maybe pick up one from free agency and/or draft one? We never have anyone to defend the small forwards from other teams.
  • Midfielders. Some guys with class and silky skills. As good as Nathan Jones is, he is not good enough to be a clubs No. 1 midfielder. Obviously we will draft Jack Viney which i think will be our 2nd round pick, so i think with picks 3,4,12 we need 2 midfielders. Jimmy Toumpas looks good if he slips to pick 3. Looking at Leigh Montagna, Travis Boak, Josh Caddy etc... would be fantastic
  • Someone to help out Mitch clark.
  • Half back/wingmen with pace and skills. one name comes to mind for me. Goddard. Would be fantastic if we could pick him up.

I think that we currently lack class and skill the most, thats why we need guys that can hit a target. Our delivery into the forward line is shocking, luckily we had Mitch Clark for the start of the season to take pack marks, but we cant rely on that. We need players that can hit up a lead on the chest.

Even our skills around the ground have been shocking.

We obviously have the salary cap room and the draft picks to make an onslaught this off season and i hope we do, and that it is successful.

* Key position forward.

* Small crumbing forward

* Inside midfielder & inside/outside midfielder

* Rebounding defender

Key position forward: Cloke would be amazing to get.

Small crumbing forward: dont need one in my opinion, develop jetta and maybe tapscott could play a multi role at Melbourne

Inside midfielder & inside/outside midfielder: Boak (but i dont think we will even get close to getting him, Montagna, Hayes maybe, stanton as a restricted agent could be really good as i rate Stanton, Salopek,SHANE TUCK IS A STAR, matt rosa, Josh Caddy

rebounding defender: Clinton Young, Mckay, Pearce

but most of all the players that would suit melbourne best are Cloke, Montagna, Roa and Young and caddy

Cloke

Dixon

Stevens

Byrnes

Knights

Ben Kennedy would be a better pick at #13 than trading for Caddy, only 11 touches last night in a winning side

You left out, 3 goals!

Now that looks impressive now you think he only get 11 touches.

I think Caddys going to be a gun and is further developed, in saying that, I do like Kennedy also - rare athletic qualities in him for a go-getta.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

    In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

    CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

    The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

    I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

    Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
