Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Not sure he would be to embarrassed about last years B&F winner playing ahead of him.

Give him time, hasn't played much footy, fitness levels on all players are being worked on. Get the feeling we are doing a early pre season in the sense still training heavily in trying to gain fitness instead of maintaining it.

What has happened to this guy?

Should be embarrassed to see the names MacDonald, Dunn, McKenzie and Moloney ahead of him on the team sheet.

Should be absolutely banging down the door to be picked with his talent.

I think he'll be ok he just needs to get some fitness; some of these talented kids never had to train hard because the had natural ability which, I reckon he's got.

Good pre season and hard work will be good for him.

Aside from the broken jaw?

In the team chat today Brown said that Gys is playing well and very close to selection, but he is underdone fitness-wise and they think it could be counterproductive to play him when his body isn't up to it. He said basically the same thing about Cook.

Doubt Carlton would have picked him with that selection. If I remember it was a shock selection.

It was a bit of a shock to the bigfooty experts, who generally had him going 10 places later.

2 teams universally lauded for their astute recruiting, the cats and swans, were both fans and were said to have been set to take him with their picks if he lasted that long.

Instead they had to settle for Mitch Duncan and Lewis Jetta respectively.

He'll be fine - has undoubted talent, but has been held back by poor fitness, injuries and I think a lack of leadership at the club has slowed his development (that's not to say he won't get there, just that he'll take a little longer than he may have at a strong cultured club).

So his body isn't up to it but he's okay to play senior footy for Casey and named emergency for Melbourne?

Nah, he's just not playing well enough. No need for the excuses.

You don't think the fitness required at AFL level is a significant step up from VFL?

Not that "his body isn't up to it" which to me implies his body is injury-prone.

It's that he wouldn't have the fitness to run out a game in the way Neeld requires.

I think he's perfectly capable of having high possession games like he did in his first 3, but it's difficult for him to run the other way because the fitness isn't there, and in a effort to do that his productivity in winning the footy has dropped.

Far far too early to push the panic button, although he shouldn't be let off lightly.

Needs to have a massive preseason. I'd love him to attach himself to Nathan Jones from the day our season finishes.

It's interesting that he's listed as having the exact same dimesions as Howe and Howe doesn't seem fragile at all. Though some people are simply more brittle and injury prone than others despite their body size. Jack Grimes being the template for fragile players.

Howe is 2 years older though isn't he? Plus played with the big boys in Hobart, whereas Gysberts was playing u18's.

Edit: Howe's only a year older.

I think it probably has something to do with how these players play the game.

Yes, Howe throws his body into marking contests, but not the same way Grimes and Gysberts throw their body in at the contested footy.

Not to mention Howe's superior athleticism and cat-like reflexes have him able to often protect himself better.

I hope he does too as I think he has the ability to turn himself into one of our top 6 players moving forward.

Really hope he busts his arse and doesn't let it go to waste.

The Gys is going to have to do a lot better fitness wise to meet the elite compliance demands Neeld wants to impart on the team. From what I can recall he was off the pace during pre-season having watched a couple of trainings and from reports here, and whilst his numbers have slowly increased since his return from a broken jaw - in the VFL - his performances have been average.

He lacks pace both ways and defensively he has to work really hard. Clearance work is ok, without being elite. He will need to work his butt off to make it under Neeld. It's been a while since we've seen him, you've got to wonder where or even when he'll fit in. Obviously the middle of the ground is where he has excelled, but if Jordan could emulate part of McKenzie's game 'defensively' that would be a big step forward in his development, fitness permitting.

I liked him at the surprise pick, liked his size and first few games. But when we reflect on those games, he played a free wheeling role in the middle as an introduction and wasn't being held accountable. I liked his game last year v Essendon, I've seen him a couple of times for Casey and he's come off regularly appearing underdone. He has played a string of games now at Casey.

What do we make of the selection after all ? Is it still too early in terms of his development ?

I'd be interested to know what the current FD have in store for him.

From what I've seen his Casey form is pretty good but looks like they (coaches) want a bit more fuel in the tank and spread. My opinion is he is our best inside player, he is quick on the ball (not leg speed) and distributes well in traffic which none of our senior mids are capable of so the sooner we get him back up the better.

Wasn't he supposed to be the next Scott Pendelbury.

Or is he just another Barry Prendergast failure?

Not sure at this stage. Really hoping he makes it considering we spent pick 11 on him.

I expect him to play seniors in the last 4 matches, assuming his Casey form is ok.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
