Pre-match Women's League? Thoughts ...

I can't believe we are stuffing around getting involved in women's football.

Some sports are made for different sexes, football is great for blokes and netball for women.

Does that mean I hate women's footy of course not. And it's great that women can play. But you don't see Melbourne donating effort to men's netball or men's local footy. So I don't see why we'd support women's football, just a waste of time and effort.

This brings up an interesting question. Could we ever get to a point where women could play in the AFL? Of course it is a highly physical game, but there do exist women who are genetically suited to things like wrestling and weight-lifting, so that might not be an obstacle.\

We would probably never see more than a few women in the AFL, but if they're good enough I'd love to see it.

Any prematch game would be great, and would be a financial winner for the AFL.

I get to the game 10 minutes before the bounce. Why? Because there is nothing to watch, there is loud music that is annoying, and at Melbourne games I always get a seat.

If there was a reserves game, or a womens game or an under 18s game (with this years draftees playing) which finished 30 minutes before the game, I would get there 90 minutes early and watch the second half, and potentially id get there and watch the whole game, if it was Casey v someone.

If I did that I would buy lunch and a drink or two. Thats $20 extra they'd make off me every week. I never buy food at the footy, because at 320pm on a Sunday I've eaten lunch and I don't want dinner. At 730 on a Saturday night I have dinner first.

Even if they wanted to change an additional $5 entry to get there more than an hour before the game I'd be willing to pay to cover costs.

MFC shouldn't donate any effort for men's netball....because MFC is a footy club.... If netball wants a men's team than netball should do something about it not MFC.....

Find me a woman who can play soccer as well as say the A-League or the English championship and you might be started. Soccer is a game that involves a lot of skill, plenty of pace and some fitness and strength. I'm not sure the best female soccer player could get close. Now AFL is a game that requires tremendous speed, strength, fitness and top it off with skill. I'm not convinced any woman will ever have that. For one the lean body mass required to play AFL is amazing. Just to get a woman strong and fast enough would likely mean she's carrying some extra weight. Look at female tennis players, to get strong and fast enough they often look much more bulky on average than the men. Federer and Djokovic are lean athletetes where as Serena Williams, Sharapova and Wozniacki whilst not at all fat are much more bulky. We will never have a proper natural woman good enough to play AFL unless evolution takes a chance and men and women become more equal physically.

The AFL should introduce a pre-match women's league, where each team of the AFL fields a female team....

Much like in the old days, when the reserve's would play before the match, only it would be the women......

It could draw more women in to our sport.......

The Olympics has women, the Tennis has women, why can't the AFL?

What's the chance of have both teams at the bottom of the ladder? Might be nice to not lose complete interest in the AFL, because your team can't win.....

You have zero vision and forward thinking. Why would Melbourne get involved in Netball? We're a football club. At one level with Casey we are involved in local footy so you fail there as well. If Collingwood were involved in Women's footy no one here would think it was a waste of time. A waste of time would be doing nothing.

You're right about the physical side of it - women are built differently thank God, but they aren't built to take a big hit. A hit that hurts a big bloke might kill a female. Think of the legal implications for the AFL and the Clubs. Its just not going to happen. Most girls realise this, like Daisy said, when they get to about 12.

But a national womens' competition is a great idea, and fittingly, Melbourne is there at the beginning.

I'll be taking my girls down to the "G" this weekend for the opportunity to see women representing the MFC!! Wow its happened faster than i could imagine.... And I feel really proud of my club, for being the front runners!! Cant wait!! C'mon Girls!! Show them how its done!!

I'm all for it, if you're not into it, don't watch it.

It'd definitely draw more people to the game, people going to see their daughters/granddaughters/sisters/friends play when they otherwise wouldn't bother.

It'd make more teenage girls choose to play footy knowing that there's a professional league they could aspire to. That means more fit girls that like football, less uhhh... non fit girls that whinge about football.

What's the point of tommorow nights match if it isn't being televised by the way?

I'm 100% behind this. The fact that there are professional and semi-professional options for female athletes in basketball, soccer, netball, etc shows that the AFL has a lot of catching up to do. I would love to see an athlete of the calibre of Lauren Jackson or Sally Pearson play Aussie Rules. And it will happen. This is just the first step.

Unfortunately the game tonight is scheduled to finish at 6:32PM (very precise), almost 80 minutes before the main event.

Even if the strongest/biggest male playing in the comp was bigger than the strongest/biggest woman, there'd be women bigger than the smallest male. (Remember Cale Morton's chicken legs?).

I am one of the proud Demonland supporters of Jasmine so I hope she has a great game.

I would have loved to have had the chance to play footy in my younger days so its great these girls are given that opportunity. I would have loved to have played full back - maybe in my next life...

I think that was a pretty impressive game today. The passing from our women's side was far better than from the Male demons. They were actually able to pinpoint targets in traffic. A few of them were seriously hard at the ball too. Not sure I would have given Daisy the player of the match. Whoever no. 3 was for us was absolutely dominant in the forward line. She killed them. Still trying to find a decent team list to figure out who it was.

Edit: Chelsea Randall possibly? Hell of a contested mark anyway.
