Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Guys, I heard a rumour which I can neither confirm or dismiss about MFCs strategy in drafting. Apparently we have advised Viney and his management that if GWS or GCS select him and effectively try and force our hands we have a gentlemen agreement that he will avoid us ad join us a year later. Apparently the management group think this occurred to to us with Sully and want to repay the favour. I this would mean we select who we want and then do a deal to force Viney the following year. I has anyone heard of this..

I gotta say, that's a pretty stupid rumour.

Viney wouldnt be the first draftee to mention that he is heading home regardless of being possibly picked by a club.

It goes unsaid, but Im sure there has been many draftees in history to make mention that they want to stay home.

But, Im expecting Viney to absolutely tear it up today, after the championships he will be the logical 1 or 2 pick anyway.

This is simply to the wet dream of juvenile Demon supporters who:

1) want revenge on GWS

2) think that Viney will go up to the club he is picked and will be easily prised away from his new mates and club.

I disagree strongly. Viney is hard at it and your classic early developer. He intimidates at the underage level which makes him look beter than he is. He is short by AFL standards and does not possess express pace. Any improvement in his endurance or capabilities overall has to be measured against the fact he has been training a lot within an AFL environment for the last 2 years i.e. where's the upside? He is IMO a Daniel Rich type pick and therefore a mid to late first rounder.

I reckon the title of this thread has got it absolutley wrong and if GWS want him at 2 I'd say go ahead.

Just said on the footy show that Melbourne will not use their first pick on vineyard and are prepared to let him go to GWS.

I think it's a ploy to stop GWS declaring its first pick for viney, putting themselves out of the race for a player who might be rated ahead of him.

Not much else we can do really.

Jack Viney will be great.

I agree with Diesel, I also agree with you rpfc, I think he will be great though I also think he does look good because of the type of player he is and who he is playing against. He is ready to settle straight into AFL which brings his value up alot, though in 2-3 years time when the other fellas develop, I don't think he will be in the top 3 of the players drafted in 2012.

The reason I began talking about MFCSS a few years ago is because of issues like this. Only a Melbourne supporter could you see such a dominant force in junior ranks, know he is likely to come to the Dees, and talk him down.

We were all screaming out for a hiatus on the drafting of skinny teenagers that might make an impact in 5 years time, well here is a kid who will come in and make an impact...

And I would wager he will come straight into the team Rd 1, 2013 and get 22 touches, 5 tackles, 5 clearances, a goal, and be on report for a fend off to the throat.

But "he won't improve from there" I here you say?

Well, I didn't know you had a crystal ball but so what if he doesn't...

Elite hardness? Check.

Body ready for AFL footy? Check.

Desire for the contest? Check.

Good skills on both sides of the body? Check.

Elite endurance? Check.

He might not need to improve to have a great impact.

If he can get those stats, and keep them up, I wouldn't give a flying rat's clacker if he doesn't improve from there.

But I'm not perturbed about taking him with pick 3, so I suppose I'm not your intended audience.

He is good rp, but there are also others who are good. You are comparing him to past draft picks like Morton, you need to compare him against the current crop. Dont let MFC beer goggles make you think he is the best without looking in detail at all other top 10 potential picks.

I am happy with how MFC is going about this and I am confident that they will play the cards spot on with this one. They have been on the ball in regards to list management since Neeld and co has come in.

Viney may be good , though there may be similar players to Viney which can be taken further down the draft for example, they may pass on him knowing they can get a similar player later on and take a type of player they can get at the high end if it dwindles later for example.

There are many things that the club will factor in rather then just if he is good or not, combinations of player types, chances of certain players slipping, what we can get from trading with other clubs ect ect all come into play. Viney will be a great player, it is whether he is the best fit or not is the question.

Your point re MFCSS is well taken rpfc, but you don't need to swing the pendulum to MFCFS to make your point. :)

Liking the look of Toumpas from SA watching on TV; well built, tallish, quick, aggressive and clean skills, and obviously a leader beung their Captain. Like the Coulhoun (sp?) player too.

After watching the first game and the first half of the second game I desperately want Toumpas. Matt Crouch and Wines very good in the first game and Garlett has shown good work in the first half against SA. Whitfield showed nothing for mine that screams number 1 pick. Keen to see how he goes in the more controlled conditions of Etihad on Wednesday.

Agree on Whitfield, must've had an off day, though he seemed to be playing a lot up forward, still did a few good things up there, but innacurate, 0.4 i think.

Games like this could flip up the expected pick order a bit. Think previous mock drafts had Wines as between 8 - 11ish. I think he ll go alot lower, would be great if MFC could pick up Viney, Toumpas and Wines.

What a mid-field we would have in a few years

Just think he is mid 1st rounder. I agree he'll be great but don't believe he fits the bill for a 1 to 2 pick. Hardness and great running ability, which he has in spades would also be pre-requistites for the majority of recruiting prospects given the nature of footy at the moment but what is Jacks elite edge that usually comes at the draft position 1 or 2?

We are talking about the Teenage Lottery Draft of the AFL © here.

You can't sit there and tell me for certain that others will develop his hardness, or desire to push himself, or his competitive nature.

And what if GWS actually want that? He seems to fit there recruiting philosophy. Suddenly it isn't a 'fake' bid, and one other team thinks he is the best in the draft.

Ultimately, we won't know for half a decade about the 2012 draft and so it would be impossible to judge the supposed output of players 5 months before the draft...

But, frankly, this kid is exactly what this soft onfield club needs to kick it up its arse.

Yes I have heard that Jack Viney will get the Melbourne either by the 2012 draft (95% sure), likely as pick #3 .... but there is a small echo in the halls that MFC will try to spook Suns and Giants by saying, if you want JV, then you may get him.

If we can get Jack as a 2nd round pick 24, pop the champagne. #3, #4, #12 & JV ... get it right and watch out. (No Bates, Dunne, Bells, Marics please)

BTW Pick 1 and Pick 2 - Lachie Whitfield & Brody Grundy (lock it down)

My selections;

Pick 3 - Jake Stringer

Pick 4 - Dayne Beams (500-600k for 4 years)

Pick 13 - Best small forward

Pick 23 - Jack Viney

3rd round Pick + Bennell too WC for Koby Stevens

Bate too WB for 3rd round Pick

Before anyone gets too carried away, we still have 10 games left and a couple of the clubs ahead of us are looking decidedly shaky. Picks 3 and 4 could well turn into picks 5 and 6.

My feeling is we will be forced to part with our first pick to get Jack Viney and it will be a considered a good get in future years. Pick 6 should still get us a quality midfielder but not necessarily the most explosive player in the draft. However, we should have learnt by now that it's not only important that we get players with natural talent but it's how we develop that talent that counts.

Three ways this could play out I reckon if we end up with picks 3 & 4.

SCENARIO 1

We're forced to use pick 3 on Viney:

3. Viney

4. Toumpas

13. Dayle Garlett, Ben Kennedy, Shannon Taylor???

26. Maybe a Rory Atkins?

SCENARIO 2

We can get Viney with our 2nd round pick

3. Toumpas

4. Stringer

13. Dayle Garlett, Ben Kennedy, Shannon Taylor???

26. Viney

SCENARIO 3

We let GWS have Viney with pick 2.

3. Toumpas

4. Vlastuin

13. Dayle Garlett, Ben Kennedy, Shannon Taylor???

26. Maybe a Rory Atkins?

Thoughts???

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
