Caddy - do we want him and if so what's he worth?

I see in today's Age Caddy is yet to resign with the Suns (whereas many of his team mates have). Now we know he wanted to return to Victoria last year IIRC we tried a last minute deal to get him.

Two questions. Would we want him and if yes what would it take to get it done?

I haven't seen enough of him to decide if we would want him, but we are definitely in the market for quality mids. He had injuries last year but has had 2 (?) pre seasons and would be a relatively known quantity. Would be a ready to go recruit in the right age range.

If we did want him i could see several trading scenarios (assuming we finish 16th and GC last):

  • We give GC our late first rounder (giving them picks 1 and 13ish and possible a priority pick) and a couple of players (say Dunn and perhaps Bate or Petterd who is a QLD boy) to get the deal done.

  • We give GC pick 3, a straight swap (giving them picks 1 and 3 and possible a priority pick). Might need to chuck in a player to get the deal done

  • We can't get a deal done with GC, he goes into the draft , we do some variation of the above deal with GWS for them to let him slide to us (they prob wouldn't be super keen on a player determined to go home to Victoria). Blease could be in the mix for trading with GWS perhaps

An interesting twist to the above deals would be factoring in Viney. In any of the above scenarios we could chuck in another half decent player (perhaps Martin) for them to let Viney through to us, allowing us to take him second round. In this scenario it would be pretty hard for the AFL to prove any Viney related trading.

Thoughts (partic on whether we would want Caddy)?

Caddy's output has dropped this year - maybe one of the young mid's whose development is being stifled by Gablett (???).

Highly rated junior but having seen him a few times on TV, I am struggling to see his point of differentiation.

Interested in the opinions of those who have seen him live.

He is pretty tough, generally a good user of the footy who also likes to drift forward and kick a goal.

He was taken high in the draft (something like 10 i think) and had good wraps from the under 18's.

Most of the Gold Coast kids have dropped away this year but i wouldn't really hold that against him.

I am all for making a play at him but i am loathe to be giving up any of our really early draft picks.

At the most i would suggest the mid first round pick and perhaps a player (who that is i don't know) in exchange for Caddy and perhaps a second round pick.

If this cannot get the deal done then i say we let him slide.

Seems to have the tools to be a gun.

Putting in half-arsed efforts to lower his price, so he can actually get to his preferred destination..?

Cos he'd never have a chance of getting there if he was playing well.

Now maybe, but it's still a remote chance.

We would have to give up a first round pick minimum.

The question is. Would the player that we pick up with that pick in this years draft be better than Caddy.

If Gold Coast try to play hard ball it just wont be worth it.

He says he is liking it up there more this year than he was last year. I have seen him play a few times and haven't seen anything amazing. But he has a good a really good build and has two years in the system already.

Worth a good hard look.

this is the thing we are in a really strong position with our picks to set up a trade with a few clubs, all the media outlets who keep linking essendon to players like caddy and boak saying they are front runners are delusional, do they forget that essendons 1st pick is spent on daniher they have nothing to offer so if we want a player like caddy or boak we will get them

Caddy went at pick 7 and has hardly set the world on fire.

Wouldn't be offering anything higher than what he went for but if he was keen to home I'm sure a suitable pick and perhaps player could be organized.

Very good point.

One of those rumours (a friends uncles brothers sisters gardener heard) but believe he is not that hot on Essendon anymore and besides as has been mentioned they don't look like they have much to offer unless it's players.

I'd like this guy on our list.

Pick 13 and Ricky Bobby.

Would that work?

I doubt it (though as i said i don't really have a sense of how good he is). What about 13, Ricky Bobby and Bate (and they promise not to touch Viney).

Hasn't shown a whole lot so far, and I wouldn't want to give anything above mid to late 1st round. I went to school with Josh, and off the field he had a bad attitude and was a very arrogant kid, very full of himself. Never played footy with him though so couldn't comment on the on field aspect.

We will still have to give up our first pick to get Viney. The F/S must be nominated before the draft to stop tampering..

Good! If a 'bad attitude' with an 'arrogant' streak translates to a tough, winning mentality on the football field ... that makes me all the more keen on him

Hopefully the days of this club picking skinny, choir-boy wall-flowers is well and truly over.

Well look at Colin Sylvia RR. A bad attitude, and truck loads of arrogance. I don't think that has led to a tough, winning mentality on the field... maybe I have to change my glasses?

No, you're right about that. It's led to a $400k a year road to nowhere for Colin.

I guess by 'bad' I more mean 'mad' ... an angry kind of 'bad' in the Mitch Robinson mould. We could do with a couple of his types at Melbourne.

Yeah I agree with you there, hopefully JV will fill this role in 2013.

Posted

Yeah that's a really good point about Essendon - what will they have to trade? Surely they don't think they'll get away with a Monfries or Dempsey for something trade?

Posted

Rather we have a swing at Boak, a more proven commodity.

I agree, a Mid 1st Rnd pick, or our 2nd Rnd, plus a mature bodied player, may go close.

IF, were going to spend too much I'd rather chase Boak who has more pre seasons into him. Both would be nice but may be a bit greedy?

I think I'd rather use our First 3 Picks,,, our 1st + compo pick, plus Mid 1st Rnd compo pick 0n our own draftees.

After that I'd be open to trade.

Would that work?

What about our 2nd Rnd pick plus Beamer, or 3rd Rnd + Sylvia?

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
