I don't have faith in him because as you say he ahs no experience as a recruiter and has been given another "job for the boys". If you reckon he can do the job that's your prerogative but I would rather see someone who has made a career out of it instead of someone who has been thrown in there as a stop-gap.

How do you know that?

I reckon he would have had some input into drafting and talent identification previously.

In fact, I'm sure I've read articles about our pre-draft planning with him sitting in & having input.

Or do you mean no experience as a HEAD recruiter..?

Because Jason Taylor doesn't have that either.

We got our physio Gary Nichols from Collingwood.

Ok, fair point, didn't realise that.

Don't really like thinking that we dont have a recruiting guru in there full time right now given what this draft is likely going to have to produce for us to be semi interesting next year and beyond.

I would be tempted to do a full assessment of Rendell, and if he is available and he is a gun, lock him up and cut the other Collingwood guy loose if he cant help us this year. (pending on what sort of paperwork we have put in place with him - dont want breach of contract and massive payout).

Rendell was not in the picture when we made this 'supposed' offer to Collingwood guy, so I think its worth revisiting.

I am not sure why I hold out hope for a good draft outcome this year, when we have proven that we have not had the capability to develop players, but I do, and while that is the case, we need the best to lead us forward.

Obviously you're not aware of Rendell stating on Footy Classified that be is burnt out and sick of the recruiting game.

That he wanted to quit, and would have walked away from it except he wanted to stay involved for the "draft of all drafts."

Following that he had every intention of walking away from the final 2 years on his contract with the crows.

You may not have considered it, but recruiting is a tough game.

There's a lot of travel, a lot of red-eye flights, a lot of footy to take in.

It's not just one game each weekend, it's 6 or more.

It's often lonely and it's time away from your family.

Todd Viney will be a massive plus for us this draft. He has had a long association with many of these boys through Jack. He will be able to tell you more about these kids, both as footballers and as people, than 95% of the recruiters at other clubs. Don't forget Jack V may also be asked for input. We have the great fortune of already being able to pick the brain of a kid we know we are going to draft who has grown up playing footy with and against all these other kids.

Todd could be massive plus, but only as an assistant in my view. We need a head recruiter of calibre of Rendell working for us now, scouring the under 18s for talent. I'm not sure I subscribe to the hyperbole that it will be make or break for the MFC, but there's no doubting the importance of this draft.

We must get it done at the trade table too.

Posted

So you think that T.Viney or the head recuiter of any club does it all?????Every team has a team of recruiters covering the whole country and watching every game of footy.......The recruitment of any player would be dicussed by the whole footy club,coaches,FD,.....I also think that the draft is not the be all and end all of the game....It takes about three years to develop these 18 year olds and as we know some just don't make it

Why does a Head Recruiter role exist?

Why, when we are the worst team in the comp and have not improved in 5 years, are we settling for a stop-gap in this role when we are set to have a very important draft/trade period?

If he's so good why has he only been appointed until the end of the season? Why wasn't he given a 2-3 year contract in that role?

Todd will have a lot of insight but if we could get Rendalls to add to it I think it would give us a better rounded approach to what is a very important draft. Getting input from a 17yo well...I guess, but I'm not sure how much you would take from it.

Because being a recruiter is a crap job if you're seen fit to be in an assistant or development role?

I doubt very much that Viney wants to be a fulltime long term head recruiter.

Doesn't mean he's not capable.

It might be crazy for Collingwood, but its twice as crazy for us. How we can enter a vital draft without a proper recruiting manager is beyond stupid. Then just to make it more interesting the person doing the recruiting is also the father of a guy who we are committed to, therefore leaving us ripe for the rest of the comp to black mail us with Jack Viney. Crazy.

There is no reason that Todd Viney is not currently functioning as a 'Proper Recruiting Manager' in his role as our Interim National Recruiting Manager. I don't see there been much of skill set difference between his role as head of development and recruiting.

It was in all the papers that Jason Taylor was prevented by the Pies from leaving and is being made to serve out the final year of his contract before joining the Dees to head recruitment post the 2012 draft.

Viney looked very impressive in the Under 18s GF (as a bottom age player) and in the VFL v Geelong. We are committed to him and will take him and that may have to be with our first rounder if other clubs bid. I don't really see it as crazy at all.

I call this thread a storm in a very small teacup.

How many teams have won flags in the last 30 years with combo of crap facilties and a low footy department spend? North x 2 and Port x 1? This is Year One for us in terms of having that combo of good facilities and an increased footy dept spend.

I have good reports that CS was both on the Grassy Knoll and at Cheviot Beach. He is the Beelzebub amongst us. And yes my tongue is firmly in my cheek.

Hissy fits aside, when you post it on a public forum, it is my business.

You must be blind with anger; you don't even seem to know what you're complaining about anymore.

This thread is about recruiting, funnily enough.

Because he is our General Manager of Player Development who is is fulfilling the role of National Recruiting Manager for 2012 because the person sought for that role was made by the Pies to serve out the last year of the contract as the Pies 2IC of recruiting.

Pretty simple really.

Yes you seem to have an answer to every single comment on this site right now Jose. You think everything is progressing beautifully within the walls, i don't.

I have been concerned since the last AGM...and post AGM the year has got worse.

Not a hissy fit at all. It is time for the CEO to tell the shareholders what is really going on.

For this club to not be set up in recruiting after what we have already been through is just plain wrong.

Jack Trengove had better have a legitimate injury, because for a number 2 pick his year has been pitiful.

Just because we plan to have a new head of recruitment in 2012, doesn't mean "we don't have it sorted."

This is your limited interpretation.

You realise that the staff at a football club is in a constant state of flux, don't you?

So we have a guy in charge trying to do two job's - how well did that go for us last time when Leoncelli left?

I honestly am losing passion with the club at the moment not just because they are losing but because of the rubbish that goes on behind the scenes and the amateur hour decisions that are made. I'm sure my passion will return when we start playing well but at the moment I get more fired up watching Richmond games than Melbourne and that is just sad. If there is more time spent anchoring the ladder over the next couple of years while off-field we keep making excuses I seriously don't know how much the supporters will be willing to put up with. You'll accuse me of hyperbole but it is just a fact - I will always be a Melbourne supporter and member but if I am losing passion and no longer care when we get beaten what does that say?

Overall my view is the most important dates for us this year are in October & November - if we don't have the best team assembled to take advantage then there will be nowhere left to hide for the club as they will have brought this all on themselves.

I am not asking for mass sackings or torch burnings. But i think it is more than fair to ask some serious questions, and the CEO is a good start.

2 positions?

Do you know what Viney's original position was?

I'd say it's now largely filled by 3 line development coaches, significantly lightening his workload.

I thought your issue was that he wasn't qualified and that it's "jobs for the boys"?

Nothing like twisting your argument when you realise you don't really have one.

What does you losing your passion for the club say?

I'd say it says you're weak of character.

That's my opinion.

The opinion that there are blokes who are pure recruiters and no one else can fill the role, is pure fallacy.

It's not a great job with the travel and the lack of real "action", so if you're capable of being an assistant, that's generally what you do.

I think Viney is filling a role he is well overqualified for, to the point where it's almost a waste of his talents and knowledge.

Well said Dr. G My feelings exactly.

My dad doesn't want to go to the footy anymore. He gets to upset by it. And he is a 50 year MCC Member.

That is the reality we face right now.

I'm really struggling to see the relationship between this and Viney temporarily filling the hole as the chief recruiter. Is Todd temping in a boring off field role the reason why your old man doesn't want to go to the footy any more, WYL?

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
