I'm not sure if this has been discussed or brought up previously but just a thought. Has green ever been experimented as a defender? I know you guys might be thinking ah too slow and all that - but Green runs back with the flight of the ball, gets in and under could probably win a few free kicks if he goes hard at the ball, has the game sense and knowledge to take one on ones - wouldn't surprise me if he could be a great spoiler maybe a Tarrant type player and a contested mark?

I would honestly feel more comfortable seeing Green in the backline rather than Joel Macdonald in regards to taking marks, his disposals and footy smarts.

At the moment Green is doing nothing at the moment in the spots he is playing in. Get him to take an imposing key position forward player and see how he fairs?

Far too slow and can't bend down below his knees to get the ball or tackle.

Can't we experiment to see how he goes at Casey?

Poor Joel Mac, one of not many that puts in 100% week after week. I have a feeling that Neeld likes his work ethic, and at the current state of play, would rather someone with his attitude turning it over than dropping him for someone with all the ability under the sun but not putting in.

In regards to the OP, I don't think Green will make a very good defender. Personally, I think we are wasting our time playing him anywhere other than a forward pocket. When the ball gets down there, he's a very good contested mark, and he's usually good for a couple of goals a game, even through ground work (as opposed to set shots).

If we can increase out I50's with Green forward, we will be a better team. We won't be a better team if we rely on Green to do the increasing of our I50's.

Bailey used to put Green back as a "spare man" in defence when the opposition had a run on. Which means he did it often. He was OK in that role, but it didn't mean he was accountable for a specific forward. I think Bailey damaged him by being indecisive as to whether Green was a forward, wingman or occasional defender. Now I suspect his age has slowed him down so that his best and possibly only option is as a forward.

Green isnt superman, if we kicked it to his advantage i reckon he'd mark it and use the ball well more often than not.

Problem for all of our forwards is the delivery. Clark kicekd 5 from 1/2 chances, cant expect him to do taht every week

True, yes, But he's costing Us Goals with his Poor disposal & decision making errors.

This is the problem. Green is a leading forward, however the midfielders have seemed intent on putting it onto someone's head instead.

Personally, I'd prefer to put Davey on the half-back flank, which is where he played his best in 2010.

I'm expecting the shout-downs to be forthcoming.

Apparantly Green's been dropped, which I can't say is a huge shock. Davey's in also, so I hope his (reputedly) improved fitness can propel him back in time to an era when small forwards roamed the G and took down lumbering giants left and right.

I don't think Green has had the real Zest for the game for the last 2 Years.

He looks like he is just seeing out time. This is a Real bad example to set for other players.

Brad will struggle to get back in to the side from now....it's life...He has had a solid career & he took the heat last year.

For that i respect him...But we need to build a side without connections to the last few years.

Keep Moulding that list Mark...a 3 year contract means you cannot waste any time.

I thought the same about Simon Godfrey tooo....

Bottom line is that Joel Mac is not good enough and turning the ball over is a death knell for a player.

How quick can we turn over 42 players on our list?

It will be a busy 3 weeks at the trade table later this year.

If you think in one of the best drafts of all time we will be able to trade out players we don't want you are seriously dreaming.

You do not think there will be retirements and delistings at season's end??

Mark Neeld is on a 3 year deal. He is not going to sit and wait for things to happen. We will have room on our list to be active during the trade weeks.

Green deep forward for me. Once the mids learnt to look then pass lace out the better for all.

Agreed - it's back to the future for Brad. He can finish as he started. Deep forward leading up as an alternative to bombing on Mitch's head. I think he can give us value in that role

He was all at sea last week when in the midfield. So often stuck in space we were never going to use

Isn't that what he's already trying to do, albeit unsuccessfully?

Simply not up to it.

Just wondering whether Brad has ever been dropped before in his long career with the Demons. Can't say I remember. Also Cam Bruce, was he ever dropped in his time with the Dees? I'm sure someone would know the answers here. Great news about WEBJET!

No way Jose - he spends a fair bit of time up the ground.

Our forward line looks horribly one dimensional at the moment with only Clark back

I'd like to see, at a minimum, one leading up & one stopping deep so the mids & half forwards have at least 2 options.

With Davey (or Bennell) 20 metres in front of Clark so if the ball goes that way, we have someone front & square at Clark's marking contests

Then again, as an old CHF, I'm probably a bit old fashioned with my forward line footy & I don't know that my structure & Neeld's would have much in common

He does, but they all do these days. They have to.

As you said, I think there's a bit of old-fashioned thinking going on here.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
