Just said that there are a few good prospects blah blah.

Said Neeld has some influence on the recruiting because he knows what he wants for his gameplan.

A few kids moved up the rankings with test results.

A few kids were moved down in his book after yesterday. (Don't know if it was due to interviews or results)

Said a few kids were at the front of their seats before the interview and finished up at the back of their seat feeling uncomfortable.

What worries me most about this stuff is the apparent significance placed on the "interview process" which seems to cover off things like family, schooling etc as well as football skill, talent, aspirations ..

While character is no doubt important, successful groups are made up of a mixture of characters - leaders, followers, extroverts, introverts, inside players, rough diamonds etc etc - can't help but feel we focus overly on solid citizens and are a little quick to pass over thise who may create a challenge - the most obvious case being Juhn Butcher - just hope this new regime under MN has enough balls to back themselves to create an environment which caters to the best mix we can put together, not just the nicest.

I don't mind it actually... it means they can identify individuals who may need a more personalised approach in order to bring out their best. It also doesn't hurt to have those with over-inflated views of themselves and their abilities, knocked down a few pegs. For some, it may be just the wake-up call they have been in need of.

Barry emphasised that the interview process whilst significant, is just part of it. The most important part of the selection process is their football ability.

I think you'll agree with this.

Correction - yes - Jack Darling - who slipped thru to mid 20's on the basis of reputation.

I will agree to a point - I would suggest we have, historically, been risk averse in our assessment of character.

I just hope they have identified players who can make a difference

I'd rather have a kid on the list that had an opinion of himself, over inflated or otherwise, than one who was shy and retiring and lacked confidence.

Knocking the confidence out of a kid can had a detrimental effect on his football career.

Yes....but. There was a fairly seductive draft pick a couple of years ago who espoused strong family values, one - club player, blah, blah blah.

Methinks there was forked tongue there....

I agree Robbie it is a lot easier to modify an over confident kid than it is to build one up when it is low.

I have said this often before but the MFC could use a couple of brash ready to go next year types.

You Know I do not care if their fathers is a member of "hells Angles" I just want someone who is tough and can play well.

Well, I guess it can work both ways. Do you want a kid who is convinced he has all it takes and doesn't want to learn? Sometimes, to quote Nick Lowe, you've got to be cruel to be kind. And I have no objection to kids with an opinion of themselves as long as they can walk the walk.

Would James McDonald have been drafted/rookie'd under todays stringent analysing at draft camps? From all reports he was a shy and retiring country kid.

Football skills have to come before any personality traits when selecting a kid.

For every Steve Johnson there is a Rod Owen, players with freakish abilities that may or not apply themselves and succeed at league level. I gues sometimes

clubs have to take a punt as West Coast did with Darling. If he messes up this off-season and ends up in jail there will be a lot of people who say 'I knew this

would happen', or he could go on to have a trouble free, premiership playing, leading goalkicker award career. Risk vs Reward.

I know it is far from an exact science.

I just want us to pick someone who is not a skinny choir boy for once.

Take a punt occasionly

Tapscott fits that bill doesnt he? We havent drafted a lot of players in the main draft under 192cm the last couple

of years, so purely through phyical developement stages all of those kids are going to be seen as 'skinny'.

Looking at Heppell theres still nothing of him but he handled himself superbly this year.

That is one in the last four years.

Nothing to courageous there

Bail, McKenzie and Jetta are as hard as nails. Blease is brave, Tapscott stupidly so. Trengove has never taken a short step and while Howe, Davis and McDonald have not been fully tested I've seen nothing to worry about.

Picking players with character means they'll go when it's their turn and in footy that is gold. BP has done that very well I would have thought.

I think people are confusing issues here.

So we give them the wake up call by rejecting them because they have a mowhawk and threw eggs at a house one day. Awesome, I'm glad we've woken them up for the next team to take advantage of their talent and renewed outlook on life.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
