The only thing I found interesting with Gaz's comments was when he was discussing The Bombers improvement. He seemed to go out of his way to highlight the great job Bomber Thompson had doneas part of Sir Jame's coaching staff.I just found that intruiging.Could Bomber be our Man?

I noticed the same thing OMR. Probably us clutching at straws, but jeez I'd love it!

If it's to be either Malthouse or Lyon, you wouldn't think it's be next week...

Seriously think Scott Burns is being looked at closely, and Barrett just backed that up on TFS.

If Malthouse and Lyon are ruled out the best credential assistants are Neeld, McCartney. Burns has big wraps. Sometime ago (I forget which thread) on one of the first coaching threads I had listed Malthouse, Neeld, Burns.

It would want to be someone who warms the cockles of the faithful because if we lose our no.1 draft pick and name an uninspiring coach within the space of 10 days membership will drop 30% heading into '012.

What is your definition of an uninspiring coach - a non experienced senior coach like Neeld or McCartney ? I couldn't see our membership drop from 36,937 to under 28,000 myself based on your prediction.

I was thinking the same thing.

I was thinking McCartney.

This.

Go hammer and tong for Malthouse and/or Lyon, fine. Plan C must be the best up and comer, and it needs to have some groundwork laid now in case plans A and B fall through.

Agree. Hoping for plan A though.

Might be something to this (and might not be either lol).....

Gazza gave me the impression he was waiting on a result from this weekend. To me that leads to The Bombres, who he may expect (or hope) will be outed this weekend, opening the window for the deal to be finalised and the announcement to be made in Garry's words "sooner rather than later".

My gut feel is Bomber T as coach or Viney as coach with Bomber as assistant or at least in a mentor role (Footy Director etc).

That's a win win for me Essendon will lose twice I wonder how Lloydy and Robbo will react. demon_biggrin.gif

I can see the logic, but why would Bomber change clubs as a director of coaching after one year with his orignial club which he captained ect to be a director of coaching at a club he has never been associated with, this doesnt run with me.

Bomber for the Senior Coaching role is another story, however still a long shot imo, Gary's comments are interesting but could just as easily mean Ross Lyon as much as Bomber, wouldnt be disappointed with either obviously.

Or nothing at all

Atleast the next week will be interesting with the club not playing finals and all haha, will fill the gap between us being crap and not playing finals and the mega event on the board which is the National draft

I like the sound of Mark Neeld, but I hope the club don't have their eye on him as a "plan B", if this article about Adelaide is correct.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/crows-lean-to-mark-neeld/story-e6frf9jf-1226133579375

Looks like it's between him and Scott Burns, and I don't reckon Burns has been an assistant for quite long enough.

Anyone else get the feeling the club is playing musical chairs with our coaching position and that we might get lumped with the scraps when the music stops?

I think all our 'preferred' options are long shots at this stage.

I agree. Doesn't make sense that Bomber would change from one club to the other in a the same role (actually it's as Senior Assistant at the Bombres not Footy Director so apologies on that part), especially given as he's gone back home to his Bombres. I'm more thinking if we did snaffle him it's more likely to be as coach. There might be the attraction of a longer contract with a few more $$ on offer to come across too if we assume he's only signed for say this year and next at the Bombres.

I'm also thinking Gazza and the committee might be looking at Viney as coach with maybe Eade as senior assistant/mentor. And i'm not saying that's something i prefer. Just another option. Although Gazza's not that keen on Eade generally so this might go against Eade being appointed in any capacity.

I guess there's so many options that could occur depending on who's willing and who's available at the right price for all parties.

I'm not sure that getting a "big name" coach was ever going to be a realistic option for the club given the contractual and actual situations of the leading coaches such as Malthouse, Lyon and Clarkson. My favourite from the outset was Mark Neeld but Scott Burns has grown on me lately so it looks like Adelaide is definitely going in the right direction. Burns is now the one I would prefer but I suspect that he's going to win the Crows' job.

The important thing is for the new coach to have complete authority to work with the team and his assistants and to be able to do things his way to mould the team. When the players see that there's a new direction and new standards to follow then they'll either accept it and progress as members of the team or fall by the wayside. I suspect that if we've chosen the right man, we will see significant improvement on an individual and a team level and that there are going to be some pleasant surprises. Much of this is of course, predicated on choosing the right person.

Burns is a quiet possibility, no doubt...with the right assistants to work with him.

No hurry in choosing...just do it right please Demons.

This is a very important decision.

I just hadn't imagined Bomba could be available.

If true, I'd be More than Happy with Him.

My personal preference list would be, with this news :-

1/ Bomba

2/ Matthews

3/ Roos

4/ Woosha

5/ Lyon

6/ Malthouse

Bomber will not leave Essendon...he has gone home. I would be beyond astounded, and he would cost way too much to pry him away from Hirdy.

It's either one of the high profile targets, or Viney and a well credentialed assistant or two.

Surely we can't still be playing musical chairs.. We want a coach with premiership experience- they are out there- but not exactly available at this point in time.

I think it's going to be either Lyon, Malthouse- or a Viney/Craig/Eade combination. We need a coach who can instill some toughness into this team and Viney can do that. So for mine it's either landing the "big fish" or recruiting a few new assistants and retaining Viney.

How is the car phone warehouse treating you these days Darren Lamb LOL =P

I probably should have said 'untried' instead of 'uninspiring'. Neeld or Burns et al could well prove an inspired choice but as 'no-names' they're not going to rouse much faith in the rank and file.

The average John Q. Demonfan is going to be thinking "oh no, here we go again down the same path".

Throw that on top of losing Scully and the crappy season we're coming off and it'll be an extremely hard sell on memberships if they go that way.

If they do it'll probably be because they've been blown away by 'the quality of their powerpoint presentation'.

That has a familiar and worrisome ring to it.

I really prefer that it not be Todd Viney. I don't think it's proper for a father to coach his son.

Also we need an outsider to come in and start from fresh, whoever that may be.

Waiting for Andy Millman or David Brent to make an appearance on Demonland =)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
