I dont think our midfield can afford to lose another experienced bigger body, even if jones doesnt tackle as much as he should.... i agree though he isnt untouchable... If you could get a fit Gumbleton it may be justified, this is what i doubt

An injury riddled start to his career but showed genuine signs in 2010 that he could become a quality KPF.

If he comes good our forward line suddenly looks seriously potent:

Jurrah Gumbleton Davey

Petterd Watts Sylvia

The Bombers have made enquiries about a couple of our players recently, including Jones. Perhaps it's worth a punt to sacrifice a player

of that type in order to get Gumby to the club.

If he comes good it would dramatically improve the balance and quality of our forward line.

This is one risk I reckon is worth taking.

The boy can play. You want Cloke or a Buddy to plug in straight away but that's never going to happen.

We should take a risk on a guy like this with massive x-factor. He didn't go no.2 in that draft for nothing.

In a year or two, we'd have a Watts/Gumbleton duo absolutely scaring the living suitcase out of every defence in the league.

Meanwhile, Cook can be groomed for CHB.

No way Essendon would let him go after watching those highlights. He would be a real acquisition though if it happened.

I do generally think RR is on the right track - we're not going to trade in Buddy or Cloke and we're not going to get anyone worthwhile for Bate, Dunn, Maric or Warnock.

Me too re: a fit Gumbleton - but that's the risk. However, you can't rule anything out without some consideration. But I don't think they'll offer him up for trade. Besides, what do we have in surplus that they would want ? You see, we don't have a quality midfield. What do they need ? A stronger midfield too. Do we have something they'd want ? Only what we want to keep IMO.

What Gumbleton has shown on the footy field is impressive ie. leap, capable marking, kicking for goal.

I wouldn't dangle Jurrah, but you could twist my arm in Aaron Davey. He'll be 29 around next Queen's Birthday and he would have to have some trade value left. I think ?

There's a risk in everything you do, and there certainly is here in these examples of trades. But it's all about improving one's list and the greater picture. Maybe 'eye on the prize' wins out this trade period. Certainly that's what Josh Mahoney alluded to prior to last Sundays game against Richmond. Clear intentions there.

No doubt it will be touch and go. And not without risk. If he can get through a full AFL game and play in that final, gee he'd be worth looking at.

Looking 2 - 3 years ahead to have a Watts-Gumbleton two-pronged structure to build a forward line around would be really something. I sniff a premiership with that sort of quality.

I love Jurrah and Davey and the former is a particularly feel-good story, but we've got to be about more than that and it may be that a ruthless but calculated risk will need to be made in order for us to compete with the big boys.

Spasmodic, mercurial types are great to watch and ooh-ahh over but in the cut and thrust of September you want structure, discipline and two genuine go-to forwards.

Anyway that's what I reckon. A spine of:

PSD would be a long shot IMO with a cashed up GWS and GC, not to mention Brisbane who by reports (if you believe that sort of thing) will lose Clark.

I don't really think cashed up is a big thing for Gumbleton he isn't really a proven AFL quantity so I wouldn't be surprised if GWS and GC were more 'hungry' for him than we would be.

I personally believe Clark will stay, whatever the outcome though his manager was recently quoted as saying he wouldn't be going to GWS. He could possibly end up at Freo being a WA boy.

I'm a real big fan of Butcher and Sam Reid.

Gumbleton was a similiar position to Butcher and Reid a few years ago but with less currency.

It's a risk with his body but that's why he is on the cheap. Do it.

Agree. You might try and do a deal for say Bate or Dunn as at least they are on the park, unlike Gumbleton and then hope our medical staff can get him right. He has hardly done anything in his time at the Bombers and they may have had enough. If he then failed with us it wouldn't be a catastrophe.

He turns 24 next year and has played 22 games since 2007 and none this year. Hardly a star.

If we are interested, then we cannot pay overs, if anything unders should be the go. Plus, not give up quality picks, only someone that is expendable, like a Bate or Dunn (even that could be considered too generous).
