WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY

We'll take Viney with our first pick, the kids worth it and will be streets ahead of other kids we could potentially pick due to his work within the club over the past 2 years. There is no option of not taking Viney and calling GWS/GC bluff. We know what we're getting, and I couldn't be more happy. Seen him play numerous times, including the under 18 carnival and TAC gf last year. Watch him absolutely tear this competition to shreds at the end of the year, then there will be no doubt he's top 3 ilk.

thats not the point, the point is that we should get a some type of benefit of him being a F/S, not 'his worth that'

We are losing out on another player of similair potential now. I would rather have a Viney and a Dustin Martin and a Cotchin rather then just a Viney and a Cotchin.

Unfortunately that was ruled out when we signed him 2 years ago.

This is professional sport, no team is going to give another an edge, especially when (if we get our [censored] together) we will be challenging the cup against GWS and GC, the same teams that have the opportunity to bid for him this year.

Hypothetically, say if Richmond finish last next year and us 17th, and they have this boom FS recruit, would we not bid and allow them to take him at pick 19, especially after they've already committed to him? To quote Neeldy, "Not on your life".

Our hand was forced when Adelaide were sniffing around Viney in 2010, we had to make a call and now we are paying for it.

I agree with you olisk. i expect the club to recruit the best available talent each year. If Viney is the best available, then fine, use our first pick. I dont think the club should or would waste a very good pick on Viney just because he is a F/S of a past club champion/captain. I would hope the club has a clause in the contract that allows us to retract or 'get out' of the contract if another club is willing to pay over for Viney.

If this draft goes belly up due to this situation i can see supporters going crazy at the club for jumping the gun on Viney. We go crazy on missing out of Darling FFS, without allowing Cook to develop.

Was chatting with someone who watched Jack play on the weekend for school. He was super impressed with his skill level and he was a clear stand out player. Probably helped by the fact that he is doing some training with the Dees etc but there is no doubt he will be a very good player...

No.

We may end up paying slightly overs for Viney but that isn't the concern of the agreement.

We knew this might happen going into this arragement and I for one will not be at all impressed if we pick a teenager over the 'brickwall with eyes' that happens to be Todd's son because he is 8 picks higher than he should be.

What kind of a 'club' are we running?

If we finish with only GWS and GC we should look to give them some 'handshake deals' before the bidding process to attempt to move Viney into the second round, but if not - we deal with getting Viney at 3 and some other gun at 4.

And 'It's Time' - as Old alluded to - how do we keep Jack a secret? If we kept him away from the club and let things fall as they would fall in junior footy - I have been assured by all and sundry he would be a mouth watering prospect of physical domination in the TAC Cup and easily a top 10 pick.

And as soon as you put top 10 and F/S together, you are going to get an 'Ayce Cordy Situation' and take him a little higher than desired.

The only way we could avoid paying overs?

Not play so crap for the rest of the year...

If only there was a way of getting Viney with our second round pick, whilst getting valuable games into youngsters like Davis, Cook, Lawrence, Blease, Bennell, Fitzpatrick, Evans, Tynan, Taggert et all.

I am sure there is a way...

We will be taking him with our first pick no matter what, but I'm the kind of cool cat that wants to have one's cake and eat it too. I want two top 5 picks AND Viney. I'm not going to be satisfied with Viney and pick 3/4. I am a greedy greedy person. I want what is best for our list. I want ruthlessness from our club and I have no shame as to how we are percieved by outside forces.

Why am I seeing Dees fans freaking out over what they'll pay for Viney? The season has barely started. He could well be worth top three.

Viney strikes as a "safe" pick but so did M Murphy. Talented player, aggressive, brilliant, professional attitude, 2 years of prep #relax

Yes, but the tank wouldn't work this year as GWS will not be beaten to the bottom.

That ruthlessness will mean swallowing our pride and dealing with Sheedy, Allan and the rest of the expansion clubs.

I think the issue is that at this stage the three to players look like being Whitfield, Stringer (not due to recent hype), and Daniher with Viney close on in this group.

So if we use pick 3 we may lose out on a better player, or be guaranteed a great one?

When we seem to have had a few better options in the past with top picks we are very skeptical as to value atm

edit - even with pick 2 we cant have Daniher so will get value we just want better value

Wonder if we ll bid for daniher if no one bids for viney

Why?

There'll be 10+ other teams willing to bid on him, making it completely unnecessary.

And Essedon, like us, will not let their player get away.

I'm with EQ, but she doesn't help the cause here.

We're going to take him regardless, and going on the bolded logic, he could end up rated 25-30, but we'll still be pushed into using our 1st pick.

Yeah no-one would've asked us what we're going to do and no-one would've noticed him training with the club.

We don't have to answer what we're going to do, other than putting him up as a father/son and seeing what other picks other teams are going to bid for him. Liike many players, especially one's who's father's are coaches at a club, he could have been training with us without us committing to taking him.

This isn't quite right because if we finish 16th and hadn't have telegraphed to the world that we were already committed then it is unlikely that GWS or GC would have been prepared to bid their 1st or 2nd pick for him with the real chance they would end up with him and miss out on the other two. If they didn't take this risk then we would only have had to use our 2nd rounder. That is the stuff up I am upset about. It's not an issue of not taking him, it is an issue of probably losing our top pick when we wouldn't have if we'd kept quiet.

That is a bluff we couldn't have pulled off.

Viney is tearing it up and we have exclusive rights, it would have looked coy in the extreme if we said - 'we aren't sure what he is worth yet'...

And clubs would call our bluff. Because it never was a bluff, was it?

Secret or not, we have wanted Viney ever since he was 15 and had mothers calling up asking Todd to get Jack to stop tackling so hard...

I think it has already been stated that Adelaide were very keen on Viney and could have secured him as an underage player through the mini draft. Considering the desirable place that Melbourne is to play at, I'm rapt that we have secured him early. A lot of this talk that we are potentially paying overs is based around the fact that our ladder position won't change in the next 17 rounds. That’s a lot of football to be played and while I’ll concede finals is well and truly out of reach this year, it is not implausible to see us rise a few spots. We may end up with picks around the 6 - 9 mark for all we know. I think we need to let this subject rest for a bit until we have a greater perspective on what picks we'll have and where these juniors are actually ranked (i.e. August/September).

Btw, 35 pages on a kid not even officially on our list... no pressure jack

Would it be just to take him at pick 3 if his worth pick 15?, i think the club should be and will be more responsible to do that.

Club will hold its cards close to its chest. No one will know what they are thinking. All i hope is that they take the hard line approach if necessary.

LOL, pick 15..

This kid is everything we are screaming out for. He is tenacious, he is tough, he has great disposal, great positioning a great footy brain. He tackles like a monster and he can take a mark. He runs and runs. He has great hands and he gets his own pill. He is Scully who is inside and out and he is already- and will be a Dee for life.

Us paying our first round pick for him is not an issue, no indeed it isn't. If we weren't as crap as we currently are this would be a non issue as pick whatever our first round would have been would have been a bargain for this blue chip stallion. I still want two top 5's AND Viney but it probably isn't going to happen.

Oh well.. sweet sweet condolences to the MFC.. we end up with J Viney. I don't care what pick we need the injection of this kid into our midfield engine is going to be like adding another 200 kilowatts of raw unbridalled power.

Vroom Vroom!!

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
