I gave up watching on foxtel and was on my way home with five minutes to go but listening to the radio. The commentators said that Bennell pulled out of a contest with about five minutes to go, and should be embarrassed about his effort, they were extremely critical of him. Did anyone see this and can shed more light on it?

I think I would have started taking short steps by then as well.

Yeah he should be embarrassed by that effort and the fact he is a repeat offender makes it worse, a big worry he is not learning from his mistakes.

He didnt duck his head or anything it was a high-ish mark where he had 5 meters from anyone.

He took his eyes off the ball to obviously see/worry where opponents were and the ball went straight through his hands.

Don't get me wrong it was gross but i've seen him do worse...

Just a skill error. Not on his Pat Malone there!

Did they mention his effort in the second qtr where he tackled a player, plucked the ball out of the air and then dished off a sharp handball to Trenners for the best goal assist of the game??

The guy is a talent and shouldn't be judged on the 'soft' predjudices people throw at him on this website. Truth is the guy is very slightly built and plays to his strengths. He's not Jonathon Brown and he knows it. He plays his best footy in space and avoids unessecary contact in order to play to his strengths.

At this stage i'm more concerned with his propensity to go missing for very long periods of time in games. Needs to get more involved, because his speed and agility/evasiveness in close could be such a huge weapon for us. His best is brilliant, but we just don't see it often enough.

If he can't improve on his weaknesses, then he won't be, and we won't be in a premiership.

He has to improve his Weakness.

I agree, a flashy player with elite skills but not much else. Endeavor????

What's the problem with this thread?

Perhaps it's the fact that it's just another of many looking for players to pillory?

Plenty missed marks through basic skill errors, Jetta's on their forward line that led to a goal for example - and that was all this was, a basic skill error. It really sickens me that Bennell is carrying the can skill for a judgement error in game two of season 2010 and one which he has made up for ten-fold since. And by the way, if you watch that game against the Pies, you will notice that Grimes actually pulled out of a much softer contest in a move that led directly to a goal, yet it was Bennell's retreat that caused far more consternation... go figure.

Was it? What happened?

I haven't seen the replay and won't be watching it, but he pulled out of a contest. You know those moments where you instantaneously look at the person you're at the footy with and at the same moment they look at you ? It was one of those.

Unfortunately you don't win finals with too may players like Davey, Bennell, Watts, Dunn and Jurrah. One or two you can cope with, but we have too many.

If it's the one i'm thinking of, Jetta's drop just prior to the onslaught was worse. I actually thought Bennell played OK today, not saying he was a standout but he at least showed some of the traits that makes me think he'll be a pretty good player for us.

Yeah, that was disappointing. Sammy Mitchell had a go at Bennell not long after that prior to a centre bounce, reminding him of the dropped mark. Mitchell had his wires crossed. He had mistaken Bennell for Jetta.

He has to improve his Weakness.

It's not a weakness - it's a limitation. He can't be lightning quick and built like the incredible hulk at the same time. I can bet you Bailey knows his limitation, but picks him for his skill and pace.

We could talk of Jurrah's inability to do much else besides fly for the mark from behind. Not alot of backing back into packs from Liam yesterday.

Agree. Jurrah has been crusing in both games so far this year. Good for a couple a game but never really looks like he's out of second gear. I'd love to really see him tear some sides apart.

That said, it's hard when the ball doesn't get forward of centre.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
