Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Can anyone recall a better debut than that from an MFC player? I can't ...

To nitpick on a kid who's just racked up club b and f votes and probably a rising star nom in his first game, is ridiculous.

the day DAvid Cordner kicked eight. Was that his first game?

Answering my own q:

Melbourne - 1985

Opponent Rd R Kicks Marks H.Balls Disp Goals Bhd H.O. Tack FrF FrA BM

Fitzroy 1 W 8 6 8 7 1

fourth season. Was a memorable round one, - to quote Jack Dyer - even if I can hardly remember it.

Tapscott is strong, has a beautiful beautiful kick. His only question marks will be his ability to play on smaller more agile opponents or those 190cm plus. Time will tell if he is good enough to cover these deficiencies. On yesterday's performance we have reason to be positive.

Could I have my pie with cream and berries please.

Couldn't agree more - time will tell if a 180cm small defender can play on 190cm plus footballers - Franklin, Brown, Cloke. Take note coaching staff !

What pie?

You haven't even admitted you were wrong, or even that you seem to be wrong at this early stage.

For humble pie to be eaten you have to actually be more humble.

It's a metaphor.

Cordner debuted in 1982. When he started his 1985 year, he had played 25 games or so.

Petterd's first game some years ago in a beaten defence was as good as I have seen for a long time.

There was a thin willowy 17yo who played his 1st game against Geelong in 1973 then looked the good then and wnet to become a club great...Robert Flower.

I was offered pie so I just asked to have it with cream and berries. I never said I was humble.

I don't disagree I just thought that, in view of his recent comments, he could have just left it at well done Tappy there'll be plenty of time and threads to voice criticism.

It's not criticism it's my observation of him as a footballer. The modern footballer is tall and agile or short, agile and very quick. Tapscott doesn't fit into either category. Time will tell whether he gets exposed because of it. And yes he was terrific yesterday.

Criticism/Observation/Query/Opinion/Doubt it's all pretty much the same no matter how you want to couch it. Who's to say he will always play on the backline, they may want him to learn the defensive side of the game then put him in the midfield.

Anyway, as I said time will tell, you won't know exactly how good he is until he's played a couple of seasons. Note how I said how good he is because I don't think there's any doubt about that, I have a hunch.

Judy Garland played his best game for the MFC yesterday..Goodes did not touch the ball in the last Q. Considering the first half Goodes played that is a brilliant effort.

i was not fully sold on Garland until yesterday, but his last Q did it for me.

Gotta back it up next week....very important.

On Garland its easy to forget that a year ago he was coming back from injury (injury in 2009 / back round 3 2010 I think)and we hadnt seen much of his game. Now he is playing on the best in the competition and doing well. Its off topic but the way the ball was coming in in the first half to Goodes would have challenged the best defenders. Like Jamar he had to step up to the key role and hopefully will prosper with that challenge.

So you have seen enough to say that this short footballer is slower and less agile than Gary Ablett Jnr ? Bartel ? Dane Swan ? Nickie D ? Rich ? None of these players are blessed with exceptional pace - all have good movement - is there something that you have seen with Tapscott that says to you he has no evasive skills ?

To me the mix for a modern day footballer is to be able to find the ball - in his one game game he has shown thats not a problem, have good courage - he has that in spades and dispose well - his foot skills are very nice indeed.

Can't see any merit in your argument at all.

i agree totally, but at DB said in the after match Garland adjusted his game and positioning against Goodes and Beat him. That is a great sign.

Many players would just Battle on and be beaten, Garland rose to the Challenge and won. I commend that. Another great training video we can use in future.

The stopping of goodes probably was the major factor in us getting back into the game....then the supporters got louder and we helped out!!!!

When I've seen him play a bit more I will, if you can judge him on one game then you're too good for me and I'll bow to you foresight and wonderful judgment.

As I explained I missed his first up game because I was in transit to Australia as the game was being played so I won’t be able to watch it until it is downloaded tomorrow from Foxtel. From what I’ve read on here he was pretty good and it seems that there are plenty singing his praises and yourself saying he played ok but then questioning his ability to progress because his perceived lack of height.

I’ve been around for a long time and I’ve seen plenty of footballers defy logic and become Stars of the game when they appeared to be the wrong shape, Mick Nolan, too slow Greg Williams, or too small Liberatore. There is a theory that you have to be 196 plus to be a FF or CHF but you have players like Fevola and Pavlich both of whom are about 190. Let’s see how he goes in the season before we pass judgment on his lack of height.

Actually I wasn't asking for judgement just putting a couple of discussion points out there. No doubt he played well and as nutbean pointed out there has been plenty of exceptional talent who aren't the current"shape" I raised the issues as after watching him play they were the only possible downsides I could find.

Jeez.

I can see where this is going. Everyone's already so combative, it's going to get to the stage where whenever Tappy has a good game, people will get stuck into Roost It... and whenever he has a bad game, Roost it will... well... roost it up everyone else. Rather like the "Jayceebee" model where whenever Grimes has a bad game he's right, but when he plays well, he's wrong. Or the "Freak" one where if a player who's 191 or 192cm or whatever it was plays well, everyone gets stuck into him.

There's going to be a thread with passive aggressive asides aimed at RI for the next year, whenever Tappy has some news.

I'd say long term Tappy will play the fwd/midfield role. I can see him becoming our Chapman. Strong bodied, straight line player who's strong overhead and can kick a long goal. He's built for finals footy.

I'd say his current position in the backline has everything to do with his elite kicking skills and our desperate need for clean disposal out of defence. Strauss was meant to be this player, but he hasn't come on (yet). An elite kicking 'quarterback' is a must with modern forward zones.

Not from me it won't, as I said earlier you can't make a judgement until he has a season or two behind him.

I'm disappointed, two posts by you both containing continued criticism of Tappy, can't you just say "yeah he's not bad is he"?

Question him in ten weeks not after his first game which was apparently very good. I say that because i was in transit back to Australia yesterday when he game was being played and didn't see it.

I was over the moon when they called his name on draft day as I felt he would go early and was amazed when he was there at 18. To miss his first game was a real shame for me.

Like a silky terrier with a drumstick, go bury it somewhere.

I'm not going to roost it up anyone. I took the opposing line before sunday and now I'm just looking for a discussion about him as a footballer. I have no intention to say I told you so, especially since what I said was wrong!!

Agree. I think others should be a little more respectful considering you've put your hand up and recognised this. There's no need to go overboard. A little sledge is more than enough. ;)

Now back to Tapscott...you should include him on your favourite players.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
