One thing I DO NOT want to hear from Dean Bailey this year is talk of how many "quarters" of football we've won. He has banged on and on about it for the past few years and fair enough to an extent during the early years of our re-build. But enough is enough. It's time to talk about "matches" we've won ... not "quarters". That is no longer a relevant statistic in my book.

I don't care if we only win one quarter per match and lose three. It's who is standing with their arms raised at the final siren that counts now. Nothing more.

If we win more quarters than last year, with also an increase of forward 50 entries-there is a dam good chance we will win enough games to play in september.

So i will LISTEN carefully to what Bails has to say....i actually think he is a very smart cookie, who took on a very tough gig.

Couldn't agree more. It's time for Bailey to start winning games. I doubt he'd survive any other league around the world with his current win- loss record.

Totally understand where this is coming from, I hate hearing it too, but it's all part of the plan Bails has, and realistically the plan is working so far and we are about where we thought we'd be in terms of our progression, so we need to hang tough.

I guess we just have to be patient, it's both encouraging and exasperating hearing Bails talk about winning quarters, or even worse when he talks about the same things that went wrong after almost every loss which always makes me wonder if they know the problem why can't they fix it?! But then I take a deep breath and reflect on where we have come from and where the expectations should be at this stage given the long term plan, and I know the direction is there and the most long lasting improvement is steady improvement.

If anything, MFC have had strong finishes. We seem to start each qtr poorly and make up. Your post about Bailey is harsh, he has to say something to the press. [censored], what do you want to hear. I'm getting sick of the players not wanting to win, look at the game agianst the dons and bris during pre-season. It's about time our senior list stood up, (Jones, Warnock, Moloney, Morton, Macdonald, Bate, Rivers). This team will fire, when all players play for the team. We have seen what they can do (Syd 2010). It's a matter of time. Winning 3/4 or 4/4 quarters will give us points. Last friday is a perfect example against Hawthorn. We took the foot off in the second half.

Bailey is spot on!

Winning 3 quater will win a game unless you are smashed in the one quater you don't win

Winning 4 quaters means you win the game

Winning 2 quaters means 50% chance

Winning one quater, probably means you will lose.

Does that clear things up. Coaches generally talk quaters because they are important in setting goals for the team. It is not uncommon for a coach who is developing players to get them to set targets for possesions per quater.

The last I watched, there were breaks between each Qtrs of the game. PLay has stopped, and then it must restart. We want the players to learn their personal signals, symptoms, whatever the person wants to call it, to recognise their personal switches that enable them to turn their focus back on each Qtr to put the hammer down.

This is a must, to learn to re engage the Mind, in total focus, each Qtr. A key to winning football, maintaining the momentum of good form.

Winning Quarters is so far from being a losers Mantra.

A quarter is also the length of time in a game between when the coach can speak to his players.

I just find the whole "quarters won" refrain deceptive, HT. As an example, if you get smashed from the first bounce (as has happened to us so often in the recent past) when the real heat is on, so what if you marginally "win" a couple of quarters and add "respectability" to the scoreboard in the second half. To me, it's junk footy played when the opposition is coasting to victory.

It's just not something good, powerful top eight sides - which is what we all want us to be - should be emphasizing.

I want to hear him say that we're about winning and applying ourselves over the full course of a football match.

It's not about being deceptive, it's like the old cliche take it one game at a time, which means that you concentrate on what you have control of, that is the here and now.

At the start of the game you set out to win the first quarter, at quarter time you set out to win the second maybe changing match ups, set ups etc.

RR, obviously if we lose a game by 20 points but Bailey came out and went "but it's okay, we won three quarters!", I might be a tad crapped off, but that is clearly not the point of the "winning quarters" goal. rpfc's and dandeeman's posts have covered why it makes sense.

Neat article attached says we defend from too far back. I actually agree with that. We are so slow from kick ins and rebounds that other teams can zone up before we clear the area. Big focus needs to be on first give BUT going forward. None of this backwards crud.

Yes the midfield needs to improve but as we saw against Brisbane often the forward line is starving itself but not having anyone in the forward fifty. Too often players look up but have no none to kick it to, so how can you expect the ball to go inside fifty if there isn't any reason for it to?

How about less talk and MORE ACTION from the coaches and players. I too am sick of hearing the same dribble from Bailey. Actions speak louder than words.
