Welcome to the Demonland ... TROY DAVIS

Very agile and fast for a bloke his size.

I remember reading him being compared to Brian Lake somewhere, and I think it's a fair comparison.

Drawing a long bow at this stage, but that's what sort of player he should be aiming to be.

TROY DAVIS

From the mfc website:

No.50 Troy DAVIS

Height: 192cm

Weight: 90kg

DOB: 10/06/92

Club: Kerang/Geelong Falcons (Vic)

Bio: Tall defender who is blindingly fast for someone of his size. Has strength and can take a hanger when required as well.Big body defender who is strong in the contest. Is real quick and consistently got up on fwds and spoiled well. Reads the play pretty well and has a purpose when defending. Clean mark and below knees. Hard nut who will compete and not be overawed by the occasion. Country lad with a hard edge. Agility is good.

At AFL level: Could play on the monsters in time and also on the lead up mid quick fwds.

TROY DAVIS

And here we have BP's view, courtesy of the mfc website:

Selection No.50: Troy Davis (Geelong Falcons)

Player profile

"He's a key back. We've got some good key backs, but we thought we needed to bring another one of them through. I was captain/coach of Kerang, so it was nice to be able to call the Kerang footy club name out.

"He's a 20-year-old and has quite a mature body. He played on Matthew Watson in the finals of the TAC Cup and played particularly well that day. He had a couple of other good performances, but that was probably when we were able to really drill down on him. He also tested well in his leg speed and is deceptively quick. In terms of a big-bodied, developing player he fit the bill."

There's a mistake here, because either he's not a 20 year old, or his birthdate is wrong.

Since he was in the TAC Cup, I'm leaning towards the former, unless there's some obscure rule I know nothing about.

Interesting that BP was captain-coach at Kerang - inside info?

Crafty old fox...

I think there might be a rule in TAC Cup that permits a couple (2? rings a bell) of older players (ie.19yo) to play again if given permission...? I could be wrong. Someone else might be able to confirm this.

Good to see us grab Troy. Very very handy lad . Will add another dimension to an already decent backline . Clever overlapping with view to our team in years to come. Hell keep some faster forwards very honest. He's sid and will only get stronger. Provides options . I'm sure Geelong would have liked him on their list . Bad luck we've got him :) great pick up

Pretty sure the kid was at Geelong Grammar this year also.

I think that bit was meant to be added to Howie's profile, but someone made an error.

He sounds and looks like the new age defender that we love at Melbourne- Garland and Frawley.

Quick, good mark, good spoiler, sound skills and a bit of dash.

I definitely think we needed another key defender developing, with McNamara being delisted and Martin being trialled in different positions. Hopefully he becomes a Barry special.

The dees drafted size, and given Troy is touted as having blistering speed for his size we may very well be looking at another Frawley type backman. At pick #50 this presents excellent value to the dees if Troy can develop to a Frawley type player.

This might spell the end of Matty Warnock though.

Assuming he is really 18 and that the 20-year-old comment is a furphy, then an 18yo weighing in at 90 kilos and being call "blisteringly fast" could be something very special. Given our current defensive stacks, I wouldn't be looking for him in the seniors until 2012 at the earliest, unless we have injuries and/or Warnock loses his pace faster than we hope. But come 2013 he should be a goer as we shoot for a flag.

That style defender has always been 'In'.

Southby/Dench/Glendinning/etc etal. counterattacking defenders are gold, always have been since the early '70's.

I'm rapt with this pick.

Also the fact that cook plays either end on a needs basis. This means we can effectively rejig our balance & structure to our advantage when we need to get a shift in a game thats proving awkward. Excellent strategy IMO.

Given that Rivers, Garland and Frawley own the defensive posts, his competition for a place on the bench or emergencies will be Warnock. I think it's a healthy choice... DB still thinking defence, defence, defence...

I'm actually more excited about having a pacey big man than I am about any of the other three, for some reason.

This kid looks like he is going to be an absolute steal, very impressed with his highlight reel shows courage and ability to read the play.

Looks like competition for a spot in the backline has just heated up a little. Fantastic.

Yeah, I don't see the need.

Anyway, it all changes at AFL level but I have a mate that played with him in Kerang and he has spent plenty of time up forward and even on a wing.

He can play in a lot of positions.

Would have thought that means he can play other positions on the ground. Not that hard. He is saying he is a backman, but not solely. Cant see why the need for the smartass reply.

before you jump down my throat buddy was not intended on being a smartass at all. for your information i actually rate E25's post and think he puts in valuable information, hence while i called him a genuise.. you looked at it the wrong way...buddy.....

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
