ragardless of talent avaialable, I cannot for the life of me understand why we wouldn't draft a big bloke, especially a forward. even a ruckman early.

We will just continue to kick it down to the skinniest forwad line in the league and watch us struggle unless we are clear and putting it onto someones chest.

With pick 12 the demons select... James Sellar!

Its called best available. Heppell would be an unbelievable get at pick 12. Why would we deny ourselves a player that has a higher percentage chance of becoming a gun than the higher rated talls likely to be available at that pick?

We can look at needs (ie tall KPP) later in the draft.

I still think it unlikely he will slip that far but if so halleluja!!

Ps actually he would meet a need - that is for a skillful creative half back that can set up the play further down the field with a laser left foot. Sounds like a need to me actually

Fantastic to see mass confusion reigning on draft day - no-one knows who is taking who outside the recruiters and understandably they've been playing it tight. We could pick just about anybody it seems outside of Swallow, Bennell, Day and Gaff.

It's a great pity they're doing the stupid 10 to 1 order again. It would be just so much better if they did the whole thing in order. The excitement hinges on who's left in the pool at the next pick. They could stop at 5 or 10 and interview the top couple if they want to. Reverse order is just a dumb, dumb idea.

Steven Hill at 31= just bc professor quigley doesn't rate him, doesn't mean he's isn't awesome

Just an observation and I'm well aware of where Quigley had Hill. I'm keen on learning where J.Green ends up in this draft, Quigley really rates him unlike other Phantom's.

I know what its called I just happen to be heavily in the draft for need camp, which is heavily in the forward line IMO

There is always a number of opinions regard players that we should take. Our forward structure doesn't look bad, I agree it would be great to land a strong body key forward but it is also important we get the best possible players that can supply good quality ball into our forward line. You can draft Jonathan Brown but if you can't get the footy to him it would be no use having him.

IMO we still have areas we need to improve but the most evident to be is improving our transition from defense into attack, we still struggle getting the ball out of our back half and we still need to improve our ball use going into our forward 50m. If a highly skilled HBF is a better footballer than a tall Forward I would take the HBF and take the risk later in the draft on tall forwards.

Our forward line has many options to kick goals, we need to improve the quality of the delivery and get more good footy delivered inside our forward 30m, not just inside the 50m arc but good quality delivery deep into our forward line.

I will be happy with any player we draft at 12, he will be a good footballer.

Spot on. Tonight will be fascinating just the same.

So you'd rather take a punt on a tall who is questionable and pass on a very good smaller player.

That doesn't make sense.

where did I say that ? What I would "rather" is that there is a tall that has ability and is available at our pick

Could well be mind games re Conca.

Induces Gold Coast to select Polec thinking they can get Heppell at a later pick, allowing Tiges to pick him.

I like the intrigue of it all!

I very very much doubt it.

Indeed. Especially since picks 9-13 may shape the whole draft. I'd prefer they go 1-last pick, especially as, like last year, there'll be no intrigue as to who's taken with the top 3 picks. Would be much more nail-biting to go in correct order, IMO.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los
