I reckon it goes a bit further than that.

Gawn was probably seen as "high risk high return" by many clubs being a tall with an ACL. Gawn was our 5th pick where others around there were having their second. We could afford to speculate.

I reckon most clubs want to at least get a player each draft and that is why we will go "best available" in this draft with our first pick even if it is the type of player we have an abundance of

Maybe GC with 9 of the first 15 and 7 before our pick 12 will go a bit left field too with the later of these picks to our advantage.

If GC don't like Gorringe for some reason and WC, Brisbane and Richmond take Heppell, Gaff and Polec as widely predicted, and with Essendon in dire need of a mid and Hille and Ryder there - Gorringe may be available at 12. I wonder if we like him?

I've seen nothing of Atley but I think he's gone ahead of Smelts in every other Phantom Draft I've read and they are seen as quite similar players. Still, I know very little about these players, so I am not really qualified to judge. Tactically, I question not taking a tall with one of those picks. As even as this draft is said to be, there is a hell of a difference between 12 and 30-something, and from there to high 40's is another big leap. I'd rather grab a quality KPP early.

Top Effort E25 Great Read. I have no idea of junior footballers apart from what you guys pass on to me via YouTube, But my Neighbour has 2 kids at Brighton Grammar, and on wednesday told me that Jacobs was the Football Captain, a gun player with a deadly Left Foot, who plays Hard.

He is a huge Bomber supporter and was jealous of that Hun Phantom, so i wouldn't be too upset if Jacobs was our number 12.

Both, but i'm not an avid TAC Cup attender.

I have been to some games, but not even one TAC Cup game each round.

I've watched lots of highlights packages, the championships that were shown on Fox and I'd be lucky if I've seen half the players in my phantom live.

I read a lot, I know a few AFL involved peoples who should be relatively well informed and I know whose opinions I trust.

I see what you are saying, Smedts & Atley are similar in ways.

I think Atley is better without the footy in hand because of his ferocious attack on the man and the footy.

Smedts is agile and hard to catch, better with the footy in his hands.

As you said, there's not much in it.

The difference I think is that Atley could go earlier, but Smedts probably won't go any earlier than I had him going.

To be honest, I put very little thought into that last pick.

I was relieved to be at the end and I see more as open ended, as in "these are the blokes that are probably left at this stage and we could end up with any of them."

Mate, I know Daniel Feiber, he's 28 and plays for Elsternwick in the Ammo's in section D4, in the two's might I add. The thread is a wind up by one of his mates. If you're interested what type of player he is, he's about 196cm's an ok mark, not a great kick and not very agile but tries his heart out. Think Ben Holland, without the guns, and a much worse kick.

I've seriously overestimated you as poster if you take a wind up thread on big footy as gospel!!!!

I doubt Atley will slide to our pick. If we had a choice between Gorringe and Darling who would you pick? I've got a feeling that Gorringe might be a slider. Gold Coast will be the only ones who might pick him up.

ill give credit where credit is due, gooood effort, i mean picking the draft is somewhat similar to reading a persons thoughts haha, so its a good effort, would love to see how the real draft pans out, but good crack its definately a tough thing to do, and your is pretty much as good as any, other than i think darling may slip lower, and we could be lucky enough to grab him.

12. Melbourne – Shaun Atley – 189cm – 82kg – Midfielder / Flanker

Hard at it mid/ back flanker. Has great size for a mid. Tackles ferociously.

I have some slight question marks over his kicking. A bit like a bigger Bartram, but he knows how to use the footy when he has it.

As such, could easily go earlier. Not later.

If he is taken by the Gold Coast I expect either Smedts or Caddy to fall to us & we’d be just as happy with both.

Given our recruiting over the last few years, do you think Atley's talents are enough to overshadow his potentially flawed kicking? I have no idea how bad his kicking is, but it seems to me that we've picked players over the last 3 years who are all good kicks.

Also, I don't think I could stomach drafting a player who's surname is Newton.

I really don't think his kicking is that bad, it's just not elite or great.

It's good. He doesn't have a fatally flawed kicking action.

I just think it could be better, and that it's not quite as good as some of the others available.

I even get the feeling I might be alone in this thinking.

He could very easily go earlier, so don't get your hopes set on him.
