Did anybody see that? In the Geelong game, that was clearly a goal. 100% no doubt, not even close

Maybe replays are on the cards, you just have to get this right. Someone is going to lose an important game one day on one of these

The Channel 10 team are going off their block at the bloke and too right

The AFL should bring in two goal umpires at each end, been calling it for years. Lots of mistakes in the past few weeks.

On SEN during the week they said that Barassi was calling for it 30 years ago

3 howlers in 2 games! Don`t be surprised if we see video umps in the finals series. If that happened to C`wood and it cost them the game believe me, there would be ramifications. Geelong will probably take it on the chin seeing they won a Premiership thanks to a shockn decision in the last quarter last year

Yeah, it might cost someone a spot in the finals, hang on, that would be us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shocker. Disgusting.

The umpires in today's game are the biggest jokes since Travis Cloke.

Three goals cleary haven't been paid.

There was also a dubious one in the North v Freo game.

It is time the AFL made a move and put in 2 goal umpires at each end. Christ the NRL do it for a game that has no bearing on hitting posts. Get with the times Andrew and stop this ridiculous situation before it costs a team a final.

Just like the tanking issue, his head will be firmly planted in the sand............

On the other hand what about those two denied goals when Melbourne played the Bulldogs a couple of months ago. In both cases the central umpire overulled the goal umpire on what appeared to be two Melbourne goals. May have already cost us a finals spot. Those decisions were the most stupid goal face decisions I've ever seen. In this case goals were denied when there was no clear evidence to overule the goal umpires decision. That moron umpire was in no position to overule the GU.

So if we get two goal umpires what happens if they disagree with each other? Who gets the final say? They'll create more clutter in the goal face and run the risk of running into each other and obstruct players.

Even 3 field umpires can't stop consistent field umpiring errors in every game.

I'd prefer a video review. And in particular during night games when most of these GU errors occur.

I think two goal umpires is a good idea however it would not have fixed that ridiculous call last night. I didn't see the ones on Friday as the umpiring was so crap in the second quarter I had to switch the game off at half time.

Posted

The thing about the two goal umpires is that the goal umpire in the pies v cats game was in the perfect position same with the boundary umpire. I am still confused on how he thought it wasn't a goal. Quartermain is right he should never goal umpire again!

On our ones against the bulldogs that was overturned because the dogs player where carrying on, last night the pies just played on and got away with it!

Posted

Quartermain is right he should never goal umpire again!

No, Quartermain is a sensationalist hack who overplays everything. According to him (and you it seems) the goal umpire should be permanently sacked on the back of one bad decision (albeit a true shocker).

On that logic, the next time Quartermain or any other commentator gives the wrong name when calling a player he should never commentate again.

One day there will be video evidence in some form just as there is in cricket and we will all wonder how we ever lived without it

Posted

The game needs a video ref.. He can help ajudicate in scoring as well as other disputes that arise during play etc. More a multifuction role instead of two MORE peopel officiating.

As called before..the goal ump was in perfect position. It was his judgement that was wrong and thsi could have been overruled by an all seeing overviewing video ref who'd have access to replays.

Quartermain is right he should never goal umpire again!

Agree. For an experienced umpire to make a mistake like that on the BIG stage... biggest home and away match of the year... is disgusting and a blight on the game. It makes our game look so mediocre.

Appalling.

video ref would only work for the blatent misses it wont work for 90% of other cases.

you will never tell if it's been touched, or come from the boot (unless some hot spot technology has come out that we haven't yet seen) it's still all guess work.

the goal that goes flying over the posts, from 5 angles you could get 5 different responses.

The goal posts should have a sensor in them that lights up when it's hit by something hard?

Posted

One thing to be said in the umpire's defence is that we have seen the replay from every angle except for the one he has to use to make a judgement.

Considering the speed of the action, I can only assume it just looked like a point to him, in that the footy didn't make contact with the boot.

The fault lies with the AFL maintaining a system which is insufficienct for making an educated call for all situations that can occur at the goalface.

Posted

There must be an over rule clause used when video evidence is so clear that a mistake has been made like last night.

Geelong were on as roll when that happened, it may have cost them the game.

With so many camera angles used by the networks already, the technology is already there.

In 20 seconds that would have been sorted out last night.

Glad it wasn't a GF....YET.

So did we just see another howler from a goal ump? I would swear that Watts' shot was across the line when it was marked, but the TV folks didn't give us a side-on view so I can't be sure. It looked to me like the player had his feet on the line and was reaching forward to take the ball, so I don't see how it could have not been a goal.

Posted

I was certain it was across the line, but noooo the ump decided to make me look stupid for jumping out of my seat.

Posted (edited)

From memory that Watts goal was in front of the Tigers cheersquad(I think?). So did the goal umpire just appease the drooling morons behind him and avoid having coins bouncing off his skull for the rest of the day?

Didn't cost them the game - and geelong got a pretty easy fifty on half time that wasn't there.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
