There's a rumour that the new franchise in Queensland will be called the the Gold Coast Suns. Can we possibly become more americanised in this country ? Are we so culturally stupid that we can't think of our own nicknames. It's nearly as ridiculous as the North Queensland 'Cowboys', or up in Ned Kelly country Albury Wodonga calling your local basketball team the Border ' Bandits ' when Bushrangers would be the obvious choice. How dumb and obsequious can we get?

We probably need an Australian football heritage commission that advises teams on the history of the game which is an integral part of our history not the history of the united states.

Can't say I see any problem with it. Given the team comes from the Sunshine State and the Gold Coast is inextricably linked with sun, surf and sand, I reckon it's a good fit.

What would you rather see?

All of those are nicknames used by American sporting teams, but that's not an issue???

The Stingrays in particular are already a TAC Cup team and the Sharks are the biggest AFLQ team.

Because the Sun is an entirely American thing and something that has absolutely nothing to do with our sunburnt country or this football team playing in the sunshine state.

They are good points you raise. I feel the only issue is that the only other sporting team knows as the suns (at least that I know of anyway) is the Phoenix Suns, so I automatically thins NBA, may just take awhile to get used to, should give it a chance I guess.

But if GWS call themselves the Patriots or something like that or Greater Western Sydney United then I wont be happy!

I couldn't really give a continental. I'm interested in the Melbourne Demons myself. Particularly interested in the next Demons Premiership. All side issues such as nicknames for new franchises are irrelevant. Suns ? It's apt if you ask me.

What about the Gold Coast Icebergs?

Gold Coast Dentures, I heard that their jumber will be a nice blue rinse. All games will be need to be played early, as supporters have to be home by 4:30 for dinner

Maybe to help get the Gary Ablett deal over the line they can call themselves:

Gold Coast Ablett's

Or if they've already promised Karmichael Hunt part of the naming rights they can be:

Gold Coast Hunt Ablett

Only problem with that would one of the members looking at all the numbers on the field and yelling out "BINGO" halfway through the 2nd quarter.

If they want to become a popular club they should call themselves the Gold Coast Thunder.

Then Thunderstruck by ACDC can be their theme song?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
