  1. In NFL/NCAA matches there is always a light (usually white) and dark (coloured) team: it's a good contrast for TV. The AFL are hardly innovators so that's why they too are on board. Red is a "dark" colour, therefore WE can't use it in our clash jumper. That's an AFL policy. White (light) coloured jumpers are popular with kids because it's easier to get autographs on. And as for "no white" for the MFC: this club's first nickname was "The Invincible Whites". A good differentiated clash jumper is another source of income for clubs. Look at EPL clubs with up 3 kits per season. Actually I think they have to lock them in for 2 seasons so they aren't appearing to gouge the fans too much. Having said all that; I don't see the huge need for clash jumpers. The fact that the stupid policy is enforced in a haphazard manner: viz - Port v Carlton in R23, us only ever playing away games against Esserden so they never have to wear that grey abomination more than once a year, Collingfilth wearing their stupid black backed jumpers against us when the white is clearer etc... I just want to see us win games in red and blue.
  2. I'm Dnic both here and there. I've posted more often there, as it was the first MFC fan forum I found. I've just logged in and changed my password details, the site seem to be running fine. Whilst the vast majority of my contributions are the drivel from a [censored], I enjoyed (the old) "ology forum at least giving supporters an outlet to for an independent voice and critique on the club. "Taking over" the site under the guise of being an arm of the club is underhanded and unwelcome. Nobody over the age 8 just wants an 24/7 "go dees 4 eva' hit parade. Might as well put "Whiteboard Wednesdays" on high rotation.
  3. .....reminding them that Patton was a MFC supporter.... If there was ever a method for making sure a player never comes to or thrives at the club, then surely it is pointing out he was a MFC supporter as kid. MFCSS lives.
  4. It would appear that at least one club has managed to get a "large Chinese" firm over the line in sponsorship: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-30/chinese-tech-firm-signs-deal-with-canberra-raiders/3923516 I, of course, have no idea what, if any, implications there are for our quest.
  5. The challenge our football club faces now is how we handle the legacy left to us by Jim. I was deeply moved and proud to hear the leadership group of the club today talk about how they won't treat Jim's memory as a trite crutch to gee up players on occasions, not like a stage prop, but more as our ongoing foundation for how we want to be seen in the future. I'd hate for the sad passing of a great individual reduced to a mere "do it for Jim", rather, as he encouraged through his work at Reach, "do it for yourself, do it for all of us" be the best you can be in your own capacity. That was his message. By being great, we honour Jim. He was great, and he raised the bar to which we should aspire. We owe him that.
  6. ACT Brumbies play in the Super15 (Rugby Union) - they'd get exposure in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In Australia, though they'd get coverage in Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, it's mostly on FoxSports as that's where the games are shown and a bit of reporting on FTA. That's for the marketeers on both sides to worry about. At least we'd get a bit more FTA coverage - though lesser merchandise positioning, maybe. Whoever we get, I hope they've got deep pockets and long arms.
  7. Hey Rhett, Will FoxFooty bring back the "commentary off: crowd noise / umps mike" audio options? Seemed to have dropped off this season.
  8. Would like to see the replays of VFL/SANFL/WAFL matches that ABC2 used to show - before they decided to focus on anything *but* sport. Wasn't great for an early bedtime, but gave a good look at future talent around the country and glimpses of faded glory (like a bloated Damian Cupido waddling around the forward lines of suburban Adelaide etc...)
  9. Every season after the club makes a Christmas video, we fail to make the finals. It's about time the club learnt from that. Clearly baby Jesus doesn't like Demons indulging in yuletide japery.
  10. @Wise Paul Prymke stands out as a real potenetial never fulfilled. Looked really good till his back ceased up. I can recall Lou Richards anointing Tony Campbell as "Melbourne's first 100 goals in a season kicker". He of course ended up Footscray full-back and part-time kickboxer. How about: Darren "two weeks of brilliance" Cuthbertson, or for the masochists Brent "the next Garry Lyon" Grgic
  11. At an aftermatch function once I pointed out to Paul Gardner that it was easier to buy All Blacks merchandise in the city than Demons gear. If you're a tourist and you go in to a city sports shop, like Rebel, looking for Melbourne team gear - you'd have no problems picking up a Victory shirt, or a Rebels or Storm jumper. You'd have to search hard for Demons gear - even during the footy season. We don't get shelf space or prominence like the other Vic clubs. Fact. My suggestion then was that we should have our gear in a shop at Fed Sq. There's a tourist info / booking service flogging trinkets and souvenirs - with the the right kind of display they'd surely ta few shirts (footy jumpers don't have the same ready-to-wear around town utlity as soccer shirts and rugby tops). Ultimately though, winning flags is what sells gear.
  12. FWIW, James Seller tweeted: "@sellardoor28 Given guernsey #30 first worn by M Maguire 1912; Peter Moore won a brownlow in it in '84 and more recently worn by S Godfrey @melbournefc" All power to you Jim.
  13. IMHO, the events from "that day on 1987" belong to a category of horror and revulsion equal to Salo or Human Centipede (1 and 2): not to be viewed. Actually, having been at VFL Park on that day, I'd contend it's more not to be viewed AGAIN. There is no joy at all in remembering that game. None. Loosely on topic, (excepting "that day on 1987"); our first match at Carrara (umm, in 1987). Shocker. Playing the Bears, we were barely playing. Very ordinary match, but we lead all day. Bears closed in our lead in fast fading light. Deep late in the match leading by a point we worked it hard from the backline running it along the wing. Rod Grinter(?) centres the footy, turn over, David Banfield swoops takes it forward. Dodgy Weezey Skase's Qintex Bears goal and hang on to win in the dark. OK, not the worst "most important" kick, but a shocker and against very ordinary opposition.
  14. This is the internet and I realise that once something gets posted, and then quoted, it becomes fact. But I remember listening to an interview Pendlbury did with the Coodabeens maybe two years ago and he said he was a Hawthorn fan growing up. I don't think the childhood team supported caper counts. I mean Tom $cully was a keen Tigers fan, and now he wants to be a Giant for life...
  15. Chunky Jones' "Timmy Watson moment" hurdling over an Adelaide defender to goal at the Punt Rd end. Same game: Trengrove's first goal and running off to the bench to be greeted by an ovation from the Member's Stand. Mark Jamar elated and deflated, flat out on the Marrara turf at the end of our win against Port. "Bombres" fan shouting incoherent obscenities at their own players as we blew them away at the start of the last quarter at the 'G.
