the article in todays paper suggested that there had never been a better goal kicked at the G. I just watched both of Buddy's goals from the same part of the ground on the news, and yeah they looked unreal!

did Adem Yze not kick 2 simular goals against Adelaide in the same spot in a night final?

They were good goals, but you could not begin to count the number of better goals kicked at the G, many of which would involve MFC players. Here are a few MFC ones for consideration:

I was there in the MCC members last night, on the wing right where he picked it up and then watched him bounce away and had a perfect view of the goal, the first was amazing....he is a big man, blindingly quick, the second....well I along with Hawthorn, Essendon and neutrals fans alike, I can quite clearly say I went bonkers. The place was going bananas.

I have always said about champions is that you know they are great....then they go and be great.... and then you still cant believe how great they are.

I was a privlidge (?? ) to see it.

Sure. As I said, they were good goals, but to suggest they are the best ever kicked at the MCG is, quite frankly (pardon the pun), ludicrous.

Haha, simple answer - couldn't find it on YouTube. There are plenty more I have missed including a few by Jurrah and Wonnaeamirri as well as Jeff Farmer etc. etc.

Yes. but It wasnt Adem Yze who kicked both two. First Peter Vardy kicked the goal in the pocket next to the Olympic stand then Adem Yze followed. It was the 2002 semi- final, one of the most lob-sided games in history. We should of won, being 22 points up at three quarter time.

Thats a shame, 1 of the great G goals ever!

Before we all get into a flap dears.....what did the pappers say?

"the article in todays paper suggested that there had never been a better goal kicked at the G."

Which paper? And its the OP's interpretation of "suggested".

Here is what the Hun said:

Retired Richmond star Matthew Richardson said it was unbelievable.

"I was sitting right on the boundary and the noise was deafening," Richardson said.

"Buddy was on fire. I couldn't bounce the ball (when I ran) - that's the thing I find amazing.

"They were two of the best goals I've seen. He's the best athlete ever to play the game."

Other greats were similarly spellbound.

Robert Walls said, "You will not see a better goal this year", while Leigh Matthews said it was "just amazing".

This is what the Age wrote

HAWTHORN legend Peter Hudson, the superstar full-forward who kicked 727 goals in a grand career, has labelled Lance Franklin's match-winning pair against Essendon on Friday night as the best he has ever seen.

Hudson last night told The Sunday Age he couldn't believe what he had just witnessed when Franklin twice burned off opponents with enthralling runs down the MCG wing and into the attacking 50 before drilling inspirational goals from near the boundary line.

Scores were tied when Franklin drilled the first and the Hawks were on the ropes when he conjured more magic six minutes later.

''I would say I don't think I have ever seen better. They were two fantastic goals,'' Hudson said.

''When you consider where they came in the context of the game, they were magnificent. They were match-winning, team-lifting goals. The distance he ran on both occasions, and he had to be able to kick them, was just incredible.''

And what would ex champions of the game know??? Its just their opinions.

The contrasting goals given by Brettmcg are great goals. But Franklin's 2nd goal after his heroics six minutes are as good as anything I have seen. To do what he did and to kick the goal from where he did is better than any other goals put up.

Stunning performance. People need to take off the red and blue goggles sometimes and realise the enormity of the performance.

Pretty sure the first was Travis.

Buddy's second goal was absolutely amazing. I'd say I've never seen a goal better than it.

Interesting that you claim "they are only opinions" and then two sentences later proceed to tell other posters they are blinkered because they don't agree with your opinion. I don't think any poster in this thread has neglected to acknowledge how good the performance was, but MY OPINION is simply that they were not the best goals I have ever seen.

As for the videos, it was simply an exercise in tailoring my post to a Demon audience. Not sure if you suffer from early-onset memory loss, but the last time I checked this is a Melbourne forum.

The first goal was good.

The second goal was bloody amazing and should win GOTY, GOTC and GOTM.

Just think about what was involved in it: the sprinting, the bouncing, the composure to kick the goal, then the beauty of the kick itself, the enormity of the moment in the match and their season, and all that for a man who is 6 and a half feet tall in the fourth quarter.

I agree Titan and he is why Hawthorn won a flag a couple of seasons ago!

Unless you have someone in your team like him you will struggle to get past 7 - 8th place.

In most Hawthorn games they know he is going to come up with a few big plays every week.He can turn a game on his own.

Unfortunately there is no one remotely close to Franklin at the Demons now

or anyone young who gives me any confidence they will be in the future.

I know the Franklins of the world do not grow on trees but without one I fear we are destined to be a 5- 6 th team at best.

Which is of course a lot better thatn last.

Its amazing when a truly breathtaking goal is kicked by a player from another team and the following happens:

1. The OP makes an errant claim about what the papers say about it.

2. Other posters can only come up with MFC goals to try (feebly) to better the effort of Franklin's 2nd goal. I would have thought it was easier to come up with great goals from other clubs players like Fev, Rioli etc who have kicked some pearlers.

3. I did say to get the red and blue goggles off for some more broadminded debate but its clearly too hard.

But well done on the your tube clips.Good viewing.

1. The quotes from the papers provided by you actually go over and above the OP's contention, by suggesting the quoted "legends of the game" believe they were the best goals EVER - regardless of venue!

2. I've already addressed why I only picked MFC goals. Furthermore, what exactly makes it "easier" to come up with great goals from other clubs?

3. I would suggest that arguing against the claim they were the best two goals ever IS debate. Your opinion on the matter is just as legitimate, but to resort to belittling those with an opposing view suggests that you are not really interested in debate at all! Based on your line of argument Peter Hudson (former HAWTHORN champion) needs to get the brown and yellow goggles off before he engages in such a debate? In the real world everyone has biases and vested interests. One common one shared by most Demonland posters is a passionate relationship with the MFC.

Great post.

It's a simple point, that as usual manages to sail comfortably over RR's head. We hear it's the best goal ever, we look at it, and we disagree...

But how dare anyone on here disagree with Rhino...

The goal wasn't the best I've ever seen. It's a very, very, VERY simple point. What's more it's entirely correct.

to make the thread relevant to the forum I chose a melourne player, adem yze. If I were to choose any goal Gary Ablett on the boundry from 50 I think it was at cardinia park againt brisbane last year. dont get me wrong almost every goal buddy kicked in 08 was a beauty, as well as those on friday night!

Exciting goals for sure...

No one said it was the best ever.

And if you dont think so DD, Well then....

fair dinkum theres some serious hyperbole going on around here.

Some contexts.. Gee Huddo an Lethal ...who'd they play for again ??? lol But no doubt there will be comment that they are fantastic players and therefore they know better. Heres the thing...we all have bloody eyes..and can form judgements. As spectators whos is better ?? Its going to depend on where youre coming from. Much gets said in the moment..and as such a little exageration might just sneak in do you think ?

Yes both good goals.. tbh the first was nothing that brilliant in the context of "brilliance" Wee all seen many better than that over the journey. The second was indeed heroic and very timely but hardly the best ever at the G.

Deep breath everyone...

The 2nd was inspirational...but not the best ever at the G

I share the dislike of Hawthorn. But we need to take off the red and blue glasses.

Those two goals of Franklin's were amazing. The first was exciting and skillful, the second topped it off. The goalposts are less than a couple of metres apart from where he kicked it. Neither were "lucky", like some of the youtube snaps.

Taken alone there might have been others close to as good, but taken together you would never go close to seeing better.

Franklins goal was one of the greats.

Scores were close, late in the game, to be able to steady and nailed it from the boundary after sprinting like that was a brilliant effort.

But I did like Allen Jakovichs mid air scissor kick goal against North Melbourne in 1991.

Surely one of the best at the MCG ever.

Simply awesome goals by Buddy!! Just as awesome were the others posted here, especially the mighty OX!! What a special talent he was and yeah it's been said a thousand times but seeing what he could do he could easily been everything Carey was, maybe more....it's a big call because Carey is rated as the best ever by many people so where would have that left Ox?

Seeing as the Red & Blue goggle debate is going on....how about we use the "Buddy was demon supporter line" and just say he learned from watching Garry Lyon and the Ox!!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
