What additions do we need to our list

As has been suggested on here by several scribes, is Rivers being played now to make him a more valuable trade next season given that is the only way to enhance your list for the next two years.

It is an interesting question. If we were to trade, given our accumulation of first round draft picks, what sort of players do we want. Once we have everyone up and running, where are our glaring weaknesses?

Perhaps I could start with where we are strong: backs tall and medium; on ballers great once the young develop; forwards terrific potentially once we get them all back and JW matures.

So what do we need? I still believe we badly need a David Neitz type of player ie large body, very strong, quick lead, strong mark, long accurate kick. There Is no-one on our list that's near that except maybe Fitzpatrick when he matures. Secondly, a second ruck. I don't believe either meesen or Spencer cut the mustard here. PJ potentiaaly might - it will be intersting to see how he performs at the weekend. Gawn is a long term (ie 3-5 years IMO) but extremely promising prospect but we need someone in the next 2-3 years capable of dominating finals football ie a Jolly type. I don't believe we have one on our list at the moment.

What do others think? Any other gaps? Any players in particular we should target?

John Anthony's out of favour at Collingwood, maybe he's worth looking into. And I also think Jamar's perfectly capable of dominating the ruck, but players like Johnson, Frawley, Dunn and some of the younger players (Gawn, Fitzy) are perfectly capable of playing ruck when required, although the last two will probably take a while.

But I'd really like John Anthony in red and blue if Malthouse doesn't want him.

I think we have a need for a quality small defender. A replacement for Wheels. Bennell, Cheney & others have been tried but for various reasons, don't provide the full package. A 20yo David Wirrpanda would be great.

But your idea is right. Forwards, forwards and more forwards. Big ones too. Watts just isn't enough... and the fill ins will only get found out the longer they play there (Martin/Jamar/PJ etc). I was thinking Hawkins, since he's stinking the place up at the cattery. But he's not much better than Anthony.

If another team lets go of a good forward he'd likely be 29+... if they let go of a young one they'd likely be damaged goods.

So I reckon we shoot for the sun... Franklin (demons supporter?). Failing that, Roughead.

Firstly its too early in the season to either finalise your cast offs and determine your wants. Much can happen in 15 rounds.

And given Rivers medical record and style of play, he will pull you a 3rd rounder at best.

First of all I'd say it's far to early to say Rivers is trade bait, with Frawley and Garland having the ability to play tall and small I still think our best defence has all of Frawley, Garland, Rivers and Warnock all in it.

As far as our 2nd ruckman goes, I still think Martin is the man for that job, can play ruck, forward and back and soon enough Fitzpatrick will be able to do this also, from what I've seen of him I like a lot! And of course Gawn as our long term prospect, wouldn't be suprised if he isn't our 1# ruckman till about 2015, but he'll be worth the wait at his size!

Another tall forward would be handy, Beau Dowler would be the best bet out there in my opinion. Although that would only be until Watts hit his straps and nailed down FF by 2012, Dowler could still be a handy back up on the list though.

Anthony isn't big though, he's more a of a leading type. Also apparently his ego is bigger than his out of shape head. We'd have to pay over the odds but I'd love to have Dawes. Why couldn't we have made a huge play for him last year!

We sure need forwards. Let's hope Hughes shows something and JW hits his straps. IMO there is not much available at the moment.

The only glaring weakness I can see on our list is a pacy defender to play on blokes like Cyril Rioli.

Even then, Garland is capable of doing it, but I'd really like a Harbrow type.

Im happy with our tall defenders;

our tall forwards look promising with Watts, Morton, Petterd, Bate, Jurrah;

rucks will take time to develop but I think we have the cattle and Jamar is good now;

we can never have too many gun mids, but I think we have sufficient stocks to develop;

small-mid forwards we have a plethora of in Jetta, Wona, Maric, Bennell, Tapscott, Green ;

small-mid defenders we have... Cheney? Joel Mac? Bruce? Bennell?

This area doesn't fill me with confidence.

2/ 1 "chop out" back up ruckman to assist Jamar

3/ 40-50 goal potential forward ... almost "Cameron Mooney type"

However, obviously I hoping the boys we have currently on our list can do the job.

We really do have a potentialy great midfield, when you consider Gysberts, Tapscott & Blease haven't played yet, there are a couple due back from injury and the young Viney and Stretch may be future F&S picks. The backs look pretty solid and are settling in. We are only defeicient in Rucks and Forwards.

A team should have a stable of ruckmen. Always assume 2 will be out injured (in our case, Meesen and Gawn). Further assume that you need at least 2 in development mode for future years. Then you need the two who are actually playing. That's 6. We have:

Jamar - current no 1.

PJ - number 2 this week.

Spencer - under development.

Meesen - LTI, rookie list, may be gone at year end.

Gawn - LTI, under reconstruction and development.

Plus a few part time fillins, like Martin, Newton even Dunny. We need two more ruckmen in the fairly short term, one of who should ideally be experienced.

Forwards. I think we have a good spread of small forwards, some of who can cycle through midfield. But Talls?

Long term I see a structure round Watts, Fitzpatrick and Jurrah. But if one of them goes down (like Jurrah has) or doesn't make it at AFL level (Watts? Fitzpatrick?) we quickly run out of options. Our current makeshift forward line shows what would then happen. So I think we need at least one, and better two, tall forwads. Real forwards, that is, not just a scan down the list for anyone 193 or taller and thrust them into attack. Rivers or Garland may succeed there some weeks, but we need a specialist or two. And as tall young blokes take more time to develop, one should be a ready made forward. Even if he is 30yo, we need someone while our young develop.

So the gaps in our list are:

1 experienced ruckman

1 new young ruckman

1 experienced tall forward (anyone saying Miller or Newton will be shot)

1 new young tall forward.

Dawes would be a better option than Anthony or Hawkins, unfortunately he looks to have hit his straps and is unlikely to leave the Pies.

What about David Hale? I think we should have made a play for him last year as well. Provides a decent key position target inside 50 and a back up ruckmen.

Slightly off topic, but i wonder if the FD have considered manuevering Neville Jetta or Addam Maric into a small lock down defender. They are both a little light on but probably a similar height to Whelan. Jetta is quite a good tackler from what i have seen.

I think Wona and Bennell will keep them out of the side for the goal sneak position.

A highly cryptic but neverthless insightful observation to which I can only reply 79FT15

I was pondering the question of our list - I suppose you need to go through our stocks and make some calls about who to perservere with, who is close to retirement etc and the Fd will do all this I am sure.

We seem to have some depth in backs at the moment with some talent developing in the wings.

Midfielders okay. Rucks agree Jamar, PJ, then Meesen, Spencer, and then Gawn - they have different maturation dates - I dont think we are over weight on ruck stocks just yet particularly considering the attrition rate inherant in the job.

Small / medium forwards we are okay on but big forwards - Newton, Miller, Watts, Fitzpatrick - then? The first two probably wont progress. Fitpatrick is considered a utility ie can play forward but not necessarily a specialist there. I dont consider Dunne, Bate and their type a big forward as discussed below.

I am not interested in John Anthony - firstly he is not a big forward at 192/92. Pavlich at 192/101 (and can play on the ball!), Brown 195/102, Neitz 191/100 not to mention Tippett, Buddy, Riewoldt etc. Nowadays 191/88-92 gets you a midfielder. Furthermore I have seen Anthony play and he is an old fashioned lead and mark man with a good kick - cant hit like Neeter and doesnt have the motor of the modern forward.

I expect we will see some mature age rookies a la Podsiadly being closely scrutinised in the WAFL, SANFL and VFL to provide a man sized ready made recruit. I think the people mentioned that we might want we cant afford.

Could it be that, shock horror, there aren't any good KPF kids available right now? There's certainly good ones playing... Fev, Brown, Roo, Franklin, Bradshaw, Pavlich, Tippett(?), Hall.... Sadly they're all sewn up by their current clubs, or GC or GWS.

What do other people think about the "other" Riewoldt? I don't know too much about him to be honest. Seems like he has some ticker, certainly knows how to get his hands on it in the forward line. Shocking kick. This is all based on round 4 of course. Probably not available anyway. It's not like he's gonna get squeezed out by the other quality on the Toigs list.
