Out: Bartram

If Rivers fit.

In: Sylvia, Rivers

Out: Bartam, Newton

I won't buy any arguments that we must replace Newton with another tall forward. He didn't 'straighten us up' or 'provide a target' at all last week. He had 4 touches, 2 of which came from free kicks. He was rubbish. Again.

I'd probably move Bruce into the forward line rotation with Green, Petterd, Bate & Sylvia. Frankly, if we just cannot find Rivers a job to do down back, which is a fairly ridiculous notion really, then I'd rather have him up forward than Newton. Riv's the same size as Newton and at least Riv contests.

I like your thoughts on Rivers. Seriously. If we don't need him in the backline ATM why not throw him at FF. He is a great reader of the ball in flight, has a lovely set of hands and as you said is as tall as Newton. Sometime left field ideas bring success. I would give him a try if they are thinking of dropping Newton

Each to their own...I will leave it at that. Don't want to start a blue. Yes u can have ure own opinions. Bate still has legs made of Cement!!! My major criticism

I wasn't asking for a blue I was asking you to explain your comments, if you wish to leave it that is cool with me

In: Sylvia (Rivers if fit)

Out: Bartram (probably Newton)

This side needs some continuity. They need to play together, get settled, win together, it is so important.

Bennell was very lively against the pies, his to ordinary efforts were that, ordinary, lots of players have them, he needs to play so he can redeem himself.

Strauss cannot be dropped, it would be insane. The kid needs game time in the big league to learn, pressure is only absorbed when you are constantly under it, he is like a morton, just play him and get 40 games into him as quick as we can.

Someone suggested that Scully could do with a rest. Crazy, he and Trengove have been great, Scully has dropped a couple marks and made some mistakes, but i already feel better if he is near the contest, i feel like i can trust him.

INS: Sylvia, Garland (if fit), Martin

OUTS: Frawley, Newton, Dunn

Now hear me out.

Frawley had no influence on getting the ball out of defensive 50. Despite the fact that he really didn't cost us anything on the scoreboard, he wasn't nearly attacking enough to hurt the opposition at all.

Newton was also terrible. Again, he had no impact on the game for long periods of time and was the cause of some turnovers inside 50. We need players who are able to keep the ball in there so we can score. Newton didn't do this.

Dunn. Sure, he did some good things and scored a couple of goals, but he was also one of the biggest offenders when it came to turning the ball over in the forward 50. We do too much work on getting it in there to have it all undone by a couple of non-marks or poor kicks.

Scully also played poorly, but he's very much in our future, so I wouldn't drop him yet.

You have got to be kidding me. Frawley is a pillar of strength down in our backline... Why not drop davey, grimes, green and jamar too?

Umm. Did you see the game on Saturday, Chook ?

He was part of a number of attacking plays coming out of 50.

And Frawley isn't ?

If we are picking our best side the changes should be:

IN: Sylvia, Rivers

OUT: Bennell, Strauss

Plus game comments.

Wow. Pretty much exactly what I got from the game too. The only thing I might disagree with is dropping Bennell. I'd do it if it's clear that we're not "punishing" him for squibbing, because that might make it worse. I trust the Club to do the right thing. I'd drop Strauss ahead of Bennell, but if dropping the latter would help him, I'd certainly do it.

Retracted...should have deleted the original comments. Haven't time to read backflips. ;)

Why? They were once my opinions, but I saw I was wrong, admitted it and posted my new opinions. Should we retroactively delete everything that is incorrect?

You have a point. Perhaps an edited post perhaps instead of a deleted post then.

I posted this in another thread, but thought it might have some value here too. I hope that's okay.

From footywire, a comparison of our 2009 team on that horrible day against Adelaide and the team that played Collingwood last week:

2009 VS ADELAIDE

Moloney, McLean, Morton

Davey, Bruce, Jones

Sylvia, Frawley, Petterd

Rivers, Johnson, Bennell

McDonald, Warnock, Bartram

Jetta, Bate, Dunn

Meesen, Miller, Newton, Martin

2010 VS COLLINGWOOD

Grimes, Davey, Bail

Green, Bate, Bartram

Moloney, Bruce, McDonald

Macdonald, Warnock, McKenzie

Bennell, Frawley, Dunn

Petterd, Scully, Jones

Strauss, Newton, Trengove, Jamar

INS: GRIMES, BAIL, GREEN, MACDONALD, MCKENZIE, SCULLY, TRENGOVE, JAMAR, Strauss

OUTS: MCLEAN, MORTON, Johnson, JETTA, Meesen, Miller, Martin, RIVERS, SYLVIA

Those in caps are who I would consider possibly in our best 22 if available tomorrow. Also note that Rivers and Sylvia, who are listed in the OUTS, both have a strong chance of returning to our team vs Adelaide.

Here's a crazy idea...

In: Nil

Out: Nil

Would it be possible that they drop no-one? Let the side get used to one another?

So you wouldn't bring Sylvia in if fit? You're joking aren't you?

Bailey really talked up Rivers' leadership on FC the other day, so I would expect him to come in. And Sylvia selects himself, so I couldn't see this happening. But the fact that we did so well means that the Football Department need to have very good reasons for dropping the guys they do.

I think Bartram will definetly go. I can't see him playing many more games for the red and blue.... As much as his tagging game was ok, I don't think he can hold his spot if Rivers and Sylvia are fit. But the 2nd person to be dropped will be interesting... If they dont bring in another ruckman, then Newton is safe, because he can do OK in the ruck while Jamar rests. So its really between Bennell, Strauss and sorry to say it Bruce.

However, I think it will be:

Ins: Sylvia - Rivers

Outs: Strauss - Bartram

Bennell gives us a bit more of an X factor, he is unpredictable... and Strauss is the unlucky one that has to be chopped.

So to continue my team would look like:

FB: Rivers - Warnock - Bruce

HB: Grimes - Frawley - MacDonald

C: Trengove - McDonald - Scully

HF: Sylvia - Bate - Green

FF: Dunn - Newton - Pettard

R: Jamar - Moloney - Davey

B: Bail - McKenzie - Jones - Bennell

After watching the replay last night I am suprised anyone could suggest Bruce should be dropped. Maybe peoples expectations are too high with Bruce, regardless I thought he was one of our best. He is a versitle, experianced, utility and there is no way he is about to be dropped.

Let's hope we can offload him to the GC and ensure that we retain Petterd!!!!

correct, he would be one of the first few picked every week, he would have to play about 5 nightmares in a row to get dropped and even then they'd be hesitant because a)he is likely to do whatever job they need him to do including shutting down a dangerous player b)he is one of the precious few with a mature, experienced head out there and they just need him there for the kids.. especially if things go pear-shaped

will be very interesting to see if JB gets dropped. Either way I can understand the call, I think they will leave him in though. Sylvia please be fit and come in for a BOG 2010 debut

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
