Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

This topic has probarly been done before but I would like to rehash it, After hearing him speak last week he has leadership written all over him, loves the club and a player who looks like he will have a fantastic career, think he would be a great choice for the next captain. Might be too much of a burden but I think he could handle it.

Grimes will not be the next captain of MFC.

To say that he WILL be the a captain is fairly long-distance too. By the time he's of a ripe enough age, Trengove, Scully, (hopefully) Watts and a slew of others will be challenging him for spots in defence and in the midfield.

To give you some idea, there was just as much push for McLean to be captain at a similar age. And look where that ended up.

Watts will be vying for a place in defence?

Brock didn't captain the state side or his club side. Grimes Is clean cut and his work rate Is second to none. I'm not saying he will be our next captain as I think he's a bit young yet but I think he Is as good a chance If not better than Scully, Trengove, or Watts. If they give It to Davey or Moloney you'd think they'll be captain for around four years? Grimes would be 24 by then and entering his prime, perfect age to captain the club he grew up supporting.

Brock was a good talent, but he was never in the same leadership mold as Grimes, NEVER!

Grimes is incredibly mature for his age, and already plays like he has 100 games under his belt. Brock would show glimpses, then fade for a week or two. Grimes so far has outplayed Brock at a similar age, and gained a slew of respect from players and fans.

Brock was solid, I am not kicking him now that he is gone- I was always a fan.

But Grimes is a much better player, and WILL captain this club!

quote for J Strauss; "Jack Grimes will win a brownlow in the next 3-4 years"

I reckon there's a bit of mutual admiration going on with these two. Grimesy reckons Strauss will be one of the better supercoach pick-ups this year.

For the record I reckon he should and will captain the dees one day. The bloke is an absolute champion bloke and will be a champion footballer in years to come.

Didn't grimes only narrowly miss out on being voted into the leadership group this year? After less than 20 games?

Touted for his leadership at under-age level and has shown alot both on and off the field in such a short period of time, I think comparisons with McLean are unfair to him.

I'd like to see Flash skipper the ship for 4 seasons before Jack takes over and in the meantime Jack can develop his game and also develop his leadership in the leadership group.I spoke to Jack at the Intraclub at Casey 2 weeks ago and was blown away by his maturity and character at such a young age and just thought no wonder he captained Vic Metro,he just exudes leadership but not for another 4 years and 90 more games under his belt.Flash is the current holder of the Bluey and has done the hard yards onfield for years.

Jack just needs to develop his game without the captaincy burden,he's already an onfield leader.

For Grimes to be made captain next season he would be in a rare group agewise

Youngest ever was 20 (David Dench of North Melbourne)

Both Carey and Voss were 21

Most clubs are conservative when making decisions based on age so i really doubt Grimes will be given the nod just yet

I have no doubt he is in the mix though

anyone still questioning trading travis for pick 14 that year?

No. Well Benno, there is no question, other than the most probable fact that trading TJ for pick 14, resulted in a subsequent KOTD for the Mfc.

On topic, why is it that Davey doesn't rate many mentions for the captaincy ?

The coach has recently talked highly of his leadership in a recent interview, he is regarded as the front man in terms of promotion for the club, he won last year's best & fairest and has been in the leadership group for some time. He has recently signed for 4 years as well.

Geez, the kid hasnt even played a full season yet!

Dont burden him with the responsibility of leading a team..

Daveys perfect for next year.. Maybe moloney if he can stay on the park.

Id go with what Roost it said.

I never questioned it to begin with. TJ had driven me mad for years with his "will he or won't he play" attitude. Players like him are a nice finish to a quality side but to have him as the man that needs to lead he wasn't the right fit. Getting Jack was just a bonus.

Watts will be vying for a place in defence?

Oooh. Yeah, well done. How embarrassing. I think you know what I meant though, that you'll have other players playing in and around his area who'll do as much as he is doing now (quite possibly a lot more), AND you have players in other areas (forward, KP) who'll likely be laying claims to leadership and captaincy roles. It's not really fair that just because Watts takes a few years longer that he's not given every chance.

Brock didn't captain the state side or his club side. Grimes Is clean cut and his work rate Is second to none. All good points, but I never meant to make a side-by-side comparison between the two. I meant to highlight how over-enthusiastic we are about crowning our next leader, and that we did it with Brock.

Brock was a good talent, but he was never in the same leadership mold as Grimes, NEVER!

You see, this is what bothers me. Brock wouldn't be in the same leadership mould as Jack, but not for the reasons you claim. Brock's biggest fault was his off-field immaturity, which as far as I'm concerned, is way down on the list of priorities. And for each boozy story, or burnout, he would donate ten Gs to the club, or be leading the players in 3k time trials.

As for the quality of football, Brock would rack up 30+ possession games, 14 possession 1st quarters, and was for his few years at the club our leading clearance player. grimes isn't there yet. He probably will be, sure, but he's not there yet. Saying Grimes has outplayed Brock is, IMO, overstating it.

For Grimes to be made captain next season he would be in a rare group agewise

Spot on. The rest of the post was absolutely right too. Nothing wrong with being in the running for a future captaincy at his age... and it certainly helps that he's already being spoken about, 5 years before he'll need to think about it, but there's SO many more names that'll be coming on soon.

Did the early ascension to captain contribute to Carey & Voss becoming 2 of the best players the games seen in the past 2 decades? Hird was captain very young too i think, maybe theres something to be said for taking the risk if he continues developing at his current rate

For someone who seemed to do a lot of pointing and negative yelling towards team mates, and that same person who couldnt outrun a tortise walking backwards should never have been captain of our club and thankfully never will be! Maybe once Judd goes he can captain that rabble over there!

Love the way Grimes goes about it, but still to raw - even to be in the leadership group. Maybe next year, but agree with others that Flash will captain for at least 3 years from 2011 onwards!

Interesting dont you think that in our new promo/slogan etc that Davey is front and center ...theres the hint I think....thats how the club is thinking. Hes put his hand up for it ...and I reckon they ( the club..its leadership etc ) have said...well show us..and its yours.

I for one would be more than happy to have Davey captain our club. Grimes misses by a year or two, but he would make a great captain going by what we have thus far seen.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
