Not even AGS but I'm not sure that particular institution has a reputation for turning out too many AFL players.

I suppose it would be difficult to combine football and Talmudic scholarship!

Many years ago there was a young rather stocky jewish lad playing for the MFC 2nds. I think he was from Mt Scopus.

Anyone remember him? I think he played in the back pocket.

Apart from Ezra Poyas (who Gutnick demanded he not be a Demon), anyone know of any recent or current jewish players in the AFL?

EDIT - Todd Goldstein (the ruckman who kicked 5 goals against us this year) is the only listed according to wiki.

Gutnick demanded that he not play on the Sabbath. Which wouldn't have been a problem in the past two years having 28 SUnday games.

Jeremy Dukes was drafted to Carlton in 1999. Had a solid Pre-Season but did an ACL and got delisted the next year. He was built like Tony Lockett but injuries got the better of him.

Julian Kirzner played Played 1 AFL game for Essendon and 3 for North Melbourne before He did an ACL as well. Hereminds me of Max Bailey because after recovering from his ACL he did it two more times before eventually retiring in his early twenties. He never really got the chance to prove himself at either club. He was a very talented Full Forward.

Other than these boys, Ezra Poyas and Todd Goldstein are the other Jews to have played AFL.

P.S - Not many people know this but Chris Judd actually has a Jewish Grandparent.

Hmm. My memory tells me that St Kilda's Mordy Bromberg (late seventies, early eighties) was Jewish. And Ian Synman, member of St Kilda's 1966 premiership team?

Phillip "Fritz" Friedman won a Morrish Medal in the Under 19's representing the Demons. Henry Ritterman (15 games) played for the Dees in the early 70's. His brother Michael was at the Melbourne Reserves at the same time and went on to win a few competition B & F's in the ammos and there was the great Michael Zemski who played for Hawthorn in the Hudson era. He was the only one to come out on top when the Catholics took on the Protestants in the mud at Glenferrie Oval.

I wouldn't expect too much different from a kid dedicated to a career as an athlete.

A lot of it comes from the particular units you study and associated bonuses.

Anyone who witnessed the Demonland/Demonology lightning premiership obliteration of all that stood in it's way would know that young S to W is a fair footballer. If you follow what the real Mr Scully did from age 14 in terms of the sacrifices he faced then you'll get your chances too. Otherwise, you could always become a Talmudic scholar.

perhaps you never knew the system well at all?

59 means he is in the top 41% of all students completing the VCE this year. It places him in the slightly above average category for academic results, which is a pretty decent result for a young bloke who was also deemed the best under 18 footballer in the country in the same year.

Only 5% of all students get 95 as an ENTER score...

Michael Klinger is a Mt. Scopus alumni, and one of the Australian Olympic table-tennis players was (I think) in the same year as him.

Were any of them at Mt Scopus?

So sick of hearing about bloody Mt Scopus.

Other Jewish schools made it into the top 20 too! <_<

David Zalcberg is the table-tennis player. I think 2 olympics and 2 or 3 Commonwealth games as well as 2 Maccabiah Games and I think was on the bridge that infamously collapsed there some years back. And now he's swappd over to the other Jewish profession... he's also a Doctor

OK back to business! Scully did reasonably well but what about Watts? (And he went to BGS where the poor things have to attend church every day before school).

59 isn't reasonably well. 59 for a Hayliebury student is probably in their bottom 10% of students. Scully getting 59 is an argument for raising the drafting age so guys don't have as much work to do for footy in such an important year.

And a Demon supporter too!

He made just one mistake during his career. Left Victoria to go to SA instead of NSW. Had he done that he would have been a regular Aussie test cap by now. Anyhow, this I believe!

You make a good point there! However some guys seem to get it all together during year 12, Luke Ball apparently scored in the mid to high 90's while playing football, cricket and aths! And I think he was vice captain at Xavier as well!

But maybe the Jesuits are just good teachers

as i said, 59 is above average across the country. yes i know hayliebury have a great record academically, but they also have a good record on the sporting field and as far as im aware provide scholarships based on sporting performance also.

why kick a kid who performed slightly above average academically and also happens to be one of the best young footballers in the country? not everyone can excel at everything can they?

you'll be one of those moron parents who expect their kids to get 90's and simply doesnt understand what that means.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

Some veteran Demonland Trackwatchers ventured down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you the following observations from another Preseason Training Session. WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
