Barry Dawson's draft review (having gone to the MFC function).

Recommended Posts

Was an awesome night at the function, feeling very unwell today from too much beer.

Had a good chat to Sam Blease, said he has put 7kg on since joining the club (it shows in his upper body). Really loving the fact school isn't there to interrupt his footy anymore. Says he will start full pre-season after Christmas and is aching to get back on the field. Said his leg was doing really well and plans to get a few senior games next year.

Connelly made a statement about Jordie McKenzie - "Any other year and we'd have just straight out elevated him onto our list. But we spoke to Jordie and he agreed to remain a rookie to give our club the chance to draft even more young talent - hats off to him for his..."

Jordie was great value where we got him. I have kept my eye on him at casey a few times and I was very impressed by his continual growth as a player. Can kick too, i'm not surprised to hear this.

my take on the night...

was absolutely fantastic!! very happy with the picks and cant wait to see them all play!

did anyone else find it hilarious when CC said he was very proud of the coaching staff for "manufacturing" the result against Richmond...probably a comment he should keep to himself for the future!

GO DEES!!

Like the post kozi, but CC's tongue must have been so far into his cheek it was almost coming out the other side.

Which of our coaching staff "manufactured" our hero Jordan McMahon's only decent kick for at least half a season? Anyway, that's ancient history - now we can just sit back & enjoy the fruits for the next decade or so.

Really appreciate the feedback guys.

Also on Gysberts Matt Burgan said that geelong where very keen with there first round pick meaning we would of just missed out, also he said that another recruiter rated him between the 10-14 mark.

Awesome wish i had have been there i am more excited than ever can't wait for next year might have to start driving down (2hrs) to watch them train if we can't win a flag in the next 6 years don't think we ever if all these players reach some potential we should have NO weakness (fingers crossed on the injury front)

Our 'window' could be longer than that - most of our talent is going to last longer than six years. We haven't got a huge number of players in the 26+ age group.

Yeah i agree i meant too say if we don't win one with this group I won't be holding out hope for my lifetime.... it seems they have built this team to be around for a long time much in the mould of Geelong.

There are 3 factors. 1) we retain the core group, 2) injuries don't play a major role, 3) most players reach there potential.

Was there last night and what a great night. Agree that the very little food was disappointing. It meant that most of the room overindulged on the amber liquid so it was pretty boisterous from about 10pm onwards

Asked an official about rookie listing Dylan Grimes and his response was we dont have any room for rookies...yet.

Gave a special toast to Jordan McMahon last night

All the drafted players from last year were there and Neville Jetta had to get up and give everyone an update on each of them.

The mention of Jordie offering to stay on the rookie list and forgo the chance to play in the first eleven games of next year was warmly appreciated by all in the room

Really enjoyed the night but I am hoping we dont have another one soon cause celebrating our first pick at 17 doesn't warrant a night like that.

Gsyberts parents were Collingwood supporters but changed pretty quickly...another victory there against the filth.

I can already see my favourite passage play next year........Queens Birthday Scully sprints away from Ball who cant keep up and Trengove shepherd puts him on his arse

Thanks for the updates everyone!!!

Yeah, great stuff everyone. I didn`t realise they were after both Gawn and Fitz. They would have taken Tapscott and fully expected to miss out on both or at least 1 of those 2. To think they got both is sensational drafting!

Sounds like we could not have asked for a better result than this as far as the FD are concerned.

Scully then spears a pass to Tapscott who handpasses over the top of a tired Presti to Watts who slots it for his fifth of the day.

Emma Quayle mentioned that Sydney were red hot on him at 14 too. Guess we had to jump on him at 11. The rest just seemed to fall in place like the perfect Tetris game.

Thanks for the insight guys, quite remarkable to see how many targets the FD hit in this draft. If not for this event, and your subsequent reports it would just seem like post draft spin from Bails, CC and co, but right now I can't help but grin from ear to ear :D .

Go Dees!

Aren't there a couple of rookies allowed to be elevated at the start of the season?

Or we could hope that a Bell or a Bartram has a long term injury in the preseason.

Mid-season upgrade from rookie to senior list.

Happened last season, not sure if it is a permanent rule.

Great thread. Big thanks to those who have provided reports from the function. Fantastic.

Other news... the club was interested in Grimes if a couple of other things hadn't panned out. Young Dylan has been very unlucky as we will be taking MacDonald with PSD1, and unless Newton or Mighty Meese get picked up somewhere, we have no available rookie spots.

Darn it. What are the chances of that happening...Gold Coast have the first 4 picks for the rookie draft don't they ?

Unless Richmond comes to our aid ?

.......and the scores just before quarter time are....

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
