Biggest disappointment for 2009

I know, but i it really pisses me off when i watch Rich ripping it up for Brisbane..... when i want our Golden boy to do it now!!!

The kid (about 9-10 y.o.) prematch at the game yesterday: "Ha ha, you have an aboriginal in your team."

Feeling. Anger. Building. Must. Try. To. Remain. Calm.

A few years ago, we were playing the Bulldogs at the Dome. Everytime Davey got the ball this kid sitting behind me who would have been about 10, would say under his breath "Coon. Coon. Coon. Coon."

Now at first I thought, maybe he's referring to Adam Cooney. So before I made a dick of myself I thought I'd make sure.

Davey gets the ball. He goes "Boong. Boong. Boong."

So I turn around and say "Hey mate, you want to watch what you're saying? Quit the racial [censored]."

So his parents chip in. The dad goes "Hey, watch how you speak to my son."

I ignore the dad and tell the kid again to watch it.

So the dad goes "It's a free country pal. We're at the footy. He can say what he wants."

So I say "Ok then mate, get the kid to stand up and say it again so everyone can have a good look at him since you're so proud of him."

The dad just says again under his breath, "It's a free country."

So I turn back around to face the game, but really feeling like clocking the dad.

Then the dad goes "Get over yourself mate. You're not even a real aborigine."

I turn around and say "What?"

He goes "You're half an aborigine arent ya."

So at this stage, my mate who was with me just grabs me by the collar and says "Leave it."

The kid didn't say anything racial for the rest of the game.

Davey kicked 4 goals.

They left early and we won.

Some parents. Some kids. Unbelievable.

Anyway, back on topic.............season disappointments.

2. Injuries to Garland, Wonaeamirri, Blease and Strauss

3. The Queen's Birthday debacle

4. Miller, Johnson, Dunn, Bell and Newton continuing to provide us with nothing more than mediocre football (though Dunn has played OK the past couple of weeks)

5. Jim Stynes' health

Agree on every point, except.....

I was pleased with what I saw of Maric this season. Sure, we will be expecting more from him in the future, but for a kid who has played 11 games, I thought he showed he has a good footy brain and did some clever things. My only disappointment with him was that he got injured and put in for surgery early.

Yeah, he had that awful game against Geelong where he had 13 disposals with 31% efficiency, but he responded well I thought.

13 disposals, 100% eff, 2 goals vs West Coast

12 disposals, 92% eff, 2 goals vs Bulldogs

15 disposals, 80% eff, vs Hawthorn

13 disposals, 54% eff, 1 goal vs StKilda

12 disposals, 83% eff, vs Collingwood

Don't worry, this time next season he will be in our best 22.

Agreed. All of the above. Plus Brock McLean's concrete boots and

Nathan Jones - A first round draft pick (12) in 2005. His disposal and decision making is not up to AFL standard. He continually handpasses forward to a player already covered. His kicks are up and under and he has no real tricks as a midfielder. I can't question his desire just his skills.

The only players I really feel comfortable with the ball in their hands are Davey, Jurrah, Bennell, Bate, Maric, Wonna and Green. I'm always expecting a turnover with anybody else.

the game against port won't be an issue now, with richmond and kangas out of the priority pick (2nd round) we will lose to them with our final win against freo.

Flew from WA with my filth supporting missus. Nearly lost my [censored] when i found out JW was playing. Really had a good feeling about the game. Purchased a new jumper with number four on the back like a little kid.

Game day joined in the walk. Saw BT in the bar. Had incredible seats.

Siren went, rain came down, floodgates opened....

And then young jack didn't show up to the post match function.

Did meet a lovely young fella named jurrah though.

Unfortunately Jack had to go home straight after that match to study for his VCE exam the next day. Would have been great to meet LJ in his pre-Jurrahcane days tho'.

Yeh that was the worst day. My partner came too, she's sports-mad but it was her first real game of AFL, she kept saying things like "why does that guy keep hitting Jack when the ball's up the other end?" We couldn't have played much worse. That game made a lot of us start to feel like the team wasn't getting anywhere and the club had no future.

You've probably hit the nail on the head as to why it was so disappointing. After weeks of honourable losses it was a huge reality check on the biggest stage of all for the Melbournefc.

What I don't understand is the massive over-reaction.

Me too. If there was a thread for 'Biggest surprise of 2009' he'd be at the top. I liked what I saw. In 4 or so games I saw more potential in Meesen than anything I've seen in Johnson.

This is true. Unfortunate, disappointing, sickening, but true.

The problem wasn't that we lost (twice), but that we didn't give a yelp on QB. QB's supposed to be Melbourne's Grand Final. Our biggest match for the year. And we played some of the worst football for the year that day. That's why it was so disappointing.

The reaction to QBW loss was big in the media also. From several weeks of most media people singing our praises for our "honourable losses", they turned on us hard. It was from one extreme to the other. The hype the club created was partly to blame for this. If a club goes hard to hype something up, it is imperative the players turn up to play or the knives come out.
