Bate - did quite well

Morton - career worst game

I don't know what people expect from Bate. I thought he was quite good and one of the only forwards who worked continually hard to present and looked dangerous. Took a couple of good contested marks, kicked 2 goals in a day where we got smashed, and generally worked his arse off. In a side with better delivery he would've been a handful, because his leads were sharp, although he never really got it to advantage.

Morton... well... he was just terrible today. Squibbed the contest on more than one occassion, and just couldn't get into the game. Off the top of my head, it was easily the worst game he's played, and i would not be surprised to see him dropped for next week.

Agree. I am a massive fan but he was awful. Another player that has been played out of form by the coach and his desire to make him more accountable. In the long run I hope it helps because it didn't tonight.

Bate was good.

Heard Matthews say - I can't see any reason that Watts went number 1 yet. Whilst I appreciate what he meant, I found it a useless comment.

I like Morton but he is starting to annoy me how he refuses to tackle, win a hard ball get or pressure opponents.

Bartram - Has to go. Offers not much to be honest

Bate - Tried hard. Kicked well. Still fumbles a bit but is a positive

Bennell - Was OK

Bruce - Best game for a while.

Cheney - Courageous marks going back into pack

Davey - Disposal is incredible

Frawley - Smashed Lloyd.

Green - Gutsy efforts all night. Is a gun

Grimes - Is going to be a gem. Great 1 on 1 player. Has to be midfield

Jetta - Maric has to be in ahead of him

Johnson - Frustrating. Can be good but makes so many errors. Not the worst at all though

Jurrah - Wow. Him and Watts together makes me happy.

Martin - Looks promising forward.

McLean - Good clearances. Always tries

Miller - Showed some good signs i guess

Moloney - Love him. Loves this club

Morton - Not any good tonight/lately. Pulled out of another contest tonight. Looked ugly

Rivers - Didnt really notice him

Robertson - Has to go. Play Newton instead

Sylvia - Such an improver this year

Watts - Im excited. Classy player. Deadly kick. Presents well. Bloody use him. He leads to the centre and we constantly kick it wide to Robertson or Bate 2 on 1. Frustrating.

Whelan - Sad to say he looks well of the pace.

Morton - career has stalled

bad game yes, career has stalled??? way to be overdramatic.

he is a second year kid FFS.

and before you criticise with your usual "say it in 3 words" retort ... "very bad game", "provided no impact",

Watching the replay. I think he said,"I havent seen anything yet in this game to suggest why he went no1."I was disappointed when i heard it. Considering he had already kicked a goal. It will come.

Pretty sure he said yet, but nonetheless it was dissapointing. FFS if we wanted a player who would be showing mature signs by now we'd have gone for cousins or traded the pick.

Short-sighted, negative and narrow minded comment I felt.

Interesting the comments about Whelan. I thought he was vastly improved over last game. Give him a couple more and he may surprise you.

Watts has to go back to the reserves. He looks lost most of the time. Doesn't seem to have the gameplan down.

Grimes is, as has been stated, a Gun. Loved that goal.

Martin may prove to be the best recruiting move of the decade. He is amazing.

Its not unreasonable for a commentator like Matthews to say what he did. Watts hasn't shown much in his 2 weeks other than a propensity to be ignored by teammates when in space. He just doesn't stand out like some other 2008 draftees. I didn't take any offense nor was I disappointed and neither should you. Matthews is just a neutral observer stating the obvious.

Out of everyone Bruce infuriated me the most tonight. He is supposed to be a senior player, yet he doesn't lead the way. His turnovers and poor disposal under pressure is pathetic. I know he's a whipping boy for some - tonight with good reason. Despite the amount of ball he had.

A terrible night. It's mind boggling how bad we are.

Agree with you Doggo, however I think the other posters are commenting on Bates limitations as to how far he can progress.

It's a poor reflection on our previous attempts at a flag under Daniher when the players left over from his reign are our current senior players and have no idea about leadership, poise and footy nous. It would seem that we will have to rid ourselves of almost all of his players. Bartram, Miller, Dunn, Bell, RObertson, Wheatley, Bruce and Whelan should all be gone by the 2011 season when we hopefully start to rise up the ladder.

Spot on with Davey tonight, too many turnovers and kept feeding off handballs to players who were immediately under immense pressure, especially in the 3rd quarter, resulting in more turnovers.

Davey is trying to get the ball moving, like Jones has playeed this year. There are risks in playing that way but with Melbourne's forward line structure, moving the ball quickly is the only way they will score. Don't criticise a guy who is doing as he is instructed.

We have a game plan?????

Don't you need a forward line in the F50 for a game plan to work?

These 3 word analyses are pointless and meaningless.

Also, while our fwd lind was not great last night, I think we lost it in the middle. Very few kicks into the 50 and whwn we did it was often under pressure, a hacked kick out of the middle. We were smashed in the middle, by Paddy Ryder and our lack of ability to lay a hand on any essendon player with the ball. We really missed Jones and Junior. Junior's brains around the contest are greatly undervalued. We also looked slow in the middle as well. I've been a big rap for Moloney this year, but he had an ordinary game last night. The sooner we get Scully, the better.

C'mon thats a bit rough hes only a kid, you "might" just be "marginally" jumping the gun ;) ... much better would have been ... still learning game.

Lets not forget ... how many people around here jumped the gun on our other 3rd draft pick.

Wasn't that long ago this forum was flooded with "trade Slyvia threads" "delist Colin Slyvia" from so called supporters who now are holding their heads in shame.

I agree. If he was on Geelong's list he probably wouldn't have played a game yet. These matches we're getting into him will be invaluable in years to come.

Will be very good for us in his prime years 23-28.

H, in your opinion where do you see morton playing down the line? what are your expectations of him? (just interested in your opinion - you're one of very few on this site that doesn't get carried away with players or get overly critical because of one bad game)

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
