Wow!

This changes the coaching landscape.....as Bill Lawry would say...."it's all happening........"

Posted

Whoa. Did not see that coming at all.

BREAKING NEWS: KANGAROOS coach Dean Laidley has coached his last game for North Melbourne. Asked this morning if he had offered to step aside, Laidley told Herald Sun online: "What you're saying is correct. We've come to an agreement."

Double that!

The merry go round continues..........

Harvey

Malthouse

Who's next?

Mark Williams?

edit: - And yet West Coast are reported to be planning on re-signing Woosha for another 3 years. Did those in charge watch the 1st quarter on Sat. night?

HOLY COW?!!! I thought he was safe at least until the rnd 16 "review" was completed.

And as to Woosha I agree, I chuckle every time I hear they are about to offer hima new 3 yr deal when his teams without Judd and Cousins have been hopeless. He reigned over a culture of drugs/drink and player infighting having to sack his captain, his next captain defected and they now play a brand off passionless footy never before seen at that club...

Staggering decision. Over his tenure, Laidley has got the best out of an ordinary list. He deserved to see out the year.

He probably isn't as charismatic as Brayshaw would like.

They showed on couple of programs last night Chocco went back to the old days of coaching at training yesterday. He pulled out the bricks for the players to train with and had at least 2 or 3 of the Port players throwing up after an intense session. Think it might be too little too late for Chocco.

The question is will it be all new, young coaches coming into the system? I'd love to see a few of the "old" coaches get a gig as there seems to be a glass ceiling for the older guys.

Does anyone think Laidley might have a head coaching job next year?

Possibilities at the moment, in my opinion: -

Richmond

Port Adelaide

Sydney

Worsfold is about to get a 2-3 year contract extension. He's not going anywhere.

Neither is Roos. They love him in Sydney.

Williams will not be at Port Adelaide in 2010. If Fremantle don't win more than 5 games Harvey's no certainty to be there next year either.

Laidley is good enough to coach at AFL level. He was just hampered by a shockingly bad list.

Well. There has been talk for sometime re: Worsfold. Still nothing is signed.

Paul Roos - I know they love him, but will he go around again?

More importantly, who for North melbourne? Another untried young coach? Or experienced coach like a Sheedy or Ayres?

Geez, you reckon Gary Ayres has his Powerpoint presentation ready? I reckon he's updated it 6 times in the last 6 months..

With 15 players still on their list from 2006 GF and add Priddis and Le Cras and WCE are targetting a 1st round PP.

Woosha tanking hard???

Melb v WCE will be very interesting.

Will the Horse be back at Arden St?

Nah. I reckon the Roos will go through a long-winded selection process in order to keep the media happy, and then Brayshaw will select a high profile person like Buckley.

Posted

Great game day coach, terrible developer of players.

Could easily be due to under-resourced football dept though...

Posted

The Roos seem to be in alot of trouble. Surely Laidley didn't dserve to be sacked. The list is weak and the injuries keep mounting. Tough gig being a coach.

Posted

I'm amazed that North Melbourne are taking such a short-sighted approach here. Laidley has done amazing things with an average list. He's consistently played in finals with only Harvey anywhere near being a top shelf player. Who do they think they;ll get who can do better with the players they have? Especially when they're all but broke and can't afford an established coach.

Posted

Harvey would be the most likely to get the "sack" next. Malthouse will just move on. Williams from Port as well.

Posted

Now that there's more than one coaching position available, I've no doubt it will speed up the decision making process of a couple of clubs, lest they miss out on nabbing someone like Nathan Buckley. You'd hate to think you missed the chance to get someone like him ten years down the track..

Posted

It seems as though it's more of a 'Laidley resigned' rather than 'Laidley was sacked' issue here. I think Laidley's thinking about next year. He wants to start building up his resume, talking to clubs, putting himself on the market. For the club, they get to start looking at new coaches. It's win-win for both.

Posted

My silly brother (who works with a Coll board member or director or something) rang me two weeks ago to tell me Malthouse would go to Richmond at the end of the year.

Only hiccup would be that North would make a move to try to steal him.

I told him he was an idiot and obviously wrong on both counts but now i`m starting to wonder.

I just didn`t think North could afford Malthouse and i didn`t think he`d want to go to Richmond.

That's for sure. Real tough gig. Brent Harvey's injury would have knocked the wind out of him.

edit: - That and Chicken gate....

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
