Dear god.

Not only have you got little footy knowledge, you don't even watch the players you are commenting on.

Palmer butchers it like there is no tomorrow. We don't need anymore players like that.

Watch the players ?? Did you? My last memory was Palmer winning the Rising star award that year...

Yes Palmer butchers his fair share of ball but you have got to be kidding if you are saying it's worse than Cales.

I don't care about the POTENTIAL upside right now? No one knows if he will be an amazing or a great player? Who knows how good a player he will

turn out to be? You can just hope. I would much rather have a ready made footballer in the draft then one who needs time to develop their body as much as Cale will need too. I understand they are very different players. But personally I think Palmer has shown much more than Cale and that is surely a better indicator of how you want a player to grow and progress? Cale may take until the end of his career to get where you all think he will get too. If he gets there at all..

Palmer has just as much upside to him as Cale. Just because Cale is yet to show this POTENTIAL consistently at an AFL level doesn't mean Palmer has run out of gas because we have seen how good he is early on. That's ridiculous. Anyway. I know I'm flogging a dead horse because we drafted Morton. I just think some supporters are blinded by their bias and narrow minded opinions.

I am as passionate as all of you. Just think with your heads not hearts.

Go Dees

This is the most laughable thread I have seen this year. The kid is in his second year is over 190cm and built like a stick. Yes he shirked a contest on the weekend and is prone to the occasional floater of a kick. To say he should be dropped is a joke. To say we should not have drafted him is beyond words. The only player available to us at pick 4 that is more proven in hindsight is Rioli. People can raise Palmer if they like but he is playing at his potential already and butchers the ball on nearly every occasion. He is averaging 23 possessions a game at 72% effectivness (77% before the weekend which even I admit his disposal was poor). Morton is an elite reader of the player and is one of the few players we have that is a quality ball carrier. What will he be like when he gets a body on him in 2-3 years time and already has 80+ games experience.

Anybody on this forum that says that Morton was a better pick than Palmer at number 4 has obviously got very little footy knowledge.

Do you actually watch footy or just look at supercoach stats??? Youve got to be kidding!! Everytime Palmer gets the ball he butchers it. He went into his first season with a mature body ready for afl. He has not and will not get any better than last year. Imo same as Daniel Rich hence him going at no.7 as well. If your after a ready made player Palmer and Rich were it. Morton is a totally different player, shape and size. He is going to take longer to develope and will be better than both of them. His football knowledge and disposal is already better than theirs. At least he takes a bit of time to size up the situation than just putting it on his boot and letting the next bloke deal with it.

I was watching a bit of the Freo game on the weekend when one of the commentators mentioned that only about 30% of Palmers disposals had been to advantage. Anyway he is out for the rest of the year with a knee.

Cale Morton will continue to improve and will be a very good player for us.

I agree that this thread is a farce for a whole host of reasons.

I also agree that Morton has a huge upside and I do not think we made a mistake drafting him. However, to me his disposal on the weekend and at various other times this year has been so diabolical, that he should probably have a spell in the 2s. The guy couldn't hit Moloney 25m in the clear. Coupled with a bit of a shirk on the weekend, it suggests to me that he may be low on confidence. A run in the 2s with a kicking role off half back may be what he needs.

This thread is not as farcical as some would make you believe. But it has arisen as somewhat of a knee-jerk reaction to the weekend, at which, IMO, Cale played his worst game so far. Too often he looked to handpass as a first option. At the time I wondered if it might have been a directive to use his hands, because it was obscene the amount of times that he'd get the ball and immediately look backwards/sideways to handpass.

I have to say, I expected him to be at least a little stronger by now than what he actually is. However I'm not worried. He reads the play brilliantly, which is why he gets so much of the ball. (Although, I did want to make mention of the really shocking attempt he made to spoil an Adelaide player at the start of the third, where he clearly didn't have eyes for the ball. It was a poor attempt, something I wouldn't have associated with Morton.)

All in all, I wouldn't be troubled nor surprised if Morton got dropped for the coming match, considering he made a ton of mistakes on the weekend, especially if the coaches think playing in the VFL could help him improve his disposal. But some of our other players could use Cale as an example of how to gut-run.

I think that Cale is a great player, knows how to get the ball and will improve to be a great player. He is a best 22 player.

However I also believe he is battling confidence in his kicking/body contact majorly. I agree that he seems to be thinking through the process of each kick which has slowed down his disposal thus creating mistakes. I have expressed my thought prevously about how i think sometime coaches of late are putting too much thinking into the game and robbing players of there natural ability. Cale to me is effected by this.

I think in Cales case a couple of weeks in the twos were he can relax, take confidence from crashing not as big bodies and enjoying the freedom will help. Its not being dropped for doing anything wrong, its just a confidence thing.

disposal efficiency of 57% really sums him up. For someone that is under no real pressure with his kicks as he is an outside receiver its nothing short of pathetic.

Agree that 57% is not up to scratch but also not consistent with his previous matches (80%,72%,79%,80%). I would expect the drop related to the conditions and gamestyle (overall we were at 69% efficiency) and his high contested possession rate (45%). Your constant targetting of Morton is becoming boring.

Cale morton is the best thing out of the 2007 draft. For one palmer is a shocking user of the ball. Much Worse than cale and now he is injured anyway.

Cale grew like 2-3 cm since he has joined the club which means he has SO MUCH developing of his body to go so he still has to grow into his body let alone feel confidednt in it.

For god sakes he has playetd 24 games and is only still early 19's. He averages over 20 disposals a game which is terrific.

People expect so much so quick these days. The people on this forum need to learn 2 things. To be REALISTIC and Patient

Couldn't agree more, digga.

Cale will be a beauty, Palmer will be a good serviceable footballer. Big blokes, particularly the tall rangy types, need a great deal of time and patience. I still think that Cotchin will ultimately be the best of the 2007 draft, but I am not at all disappointed in Cale thus far.

Cale is a good player who will develop into a very good player IMO with more games under his belt and a stronger physique. He has a fantastic motor and wants the footy. His confidence has already gone up a notch this year.

His disposal will improve with more experience and development. An excellent choice at draft pick 4 and I'm sure the coaches are very pleased with his progress. He definitely looks the goods into the future.

That's the main issue. If not then there seems little point in dropping him.

However, if so, dropping him would be a good move - omitting players need not be to 'punish' them as some see it.

Thanks for understanding the point of the thread. Nathan Jones was omitted last year for his development. I suspect that Jetta will have the same fate in the coming weeks. Our young players need to earn senior games. Hopefully as stated our depth will improve consderably in the coming weeks.

We have a focus of development of players as individuals, development of the focus of the team and remaining competive. Cale Morton will most liklely be a good player. If he learns to attack the football with intensity he could be an excellent player.

Currently he is allowed to play on his own terms, this won't happen forever and eventually he will have to learn how to play contested football or he will fail as a footballer.

When we run out on the ground in September 2013 I want to know that the 22 have been conditioned to go that they will go when it is thier turn. Its not just about Cale Morton.

I can't believe anyone seriously thought Morton was running away from Lade. Very funny!!

He was running to the next contest. He couldn't care less that Lade was there wanting to fight. His expression quite clearly showed me he was taking care of business (playing footy), not that he was scared.

As for how he approaches contests, it seems he is more playing within his means. He doesn't possess a large, robust physique, so why attract heavy body contact? He will only damage himself more than the other player. The real test for him and all footballers is to show courage when it is really needed and I haven't seen him fail to do so.

Rohan Bail for mine. when he is fit. not sure how he went over the weekend.

You honestly think bail would offer more than morton???

I'm not saying bail doesnt deserve a run cos i haven't seen him play. From all reports he should be getting a go soon. But i would be looking at rotating a few of the first year players before i consider dropping morton.

People seem to forget we are trying to develop these young players. Sure he had a dog of a day on sunday but the kids performed well for the first four games and most of last year.

you all seem to worry about his confidence, being dropped will hurt him more. the last thing you want in the back of the kids mind is that the club doesnt have faith in him. He's served us well so far. Show some patience, some faith.

didn't realise he was still growing. i suppose it is quite reasonable to expect him to start filling out after he has finished growing up. will be very exciting if he does put on some bulk.

i'm not specifically targetting morton. players that plain and simply don't have afl listed skills i just can't tolerate. morton, miller, daniel bell and bate all fall into this category. i think the players from the demonland inter-forum games have better skills than this lot.

Also one thing i hate, Morton is so unsure of himself. He hardly ever knows what he is going to do. he changes his mind like 100 times. FIRST OPTION IS ALWAYS THE BEST OPTION CALE.

he should be playing senior footy, but not for an AFL listed club. his kicking is below vfl standard.

Wow. That's just not in any way correct. I've seen him execute sensational passes time and time again. Yes he's had clangers, but with no decent targets in this side, who wouldn't? And anyway, the best kick we've had in the side in recent years had some of the biggest howlers by a demon in recent memory.

And before the pimpled wonder Y_M comes on to write some more garbage about himself, and harms MFC even more, I'll say comparisons between Bruce and Morton are made only because they move similarly and are of a similar build.

When he was recruited everyone knew he was never going to be an inside player. That's just not his game, and was never going to be. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see him become a taller Ablett, but he was never that guy. What's worrying is that he seems to think he can be a KP forward, even a CHF, and that's just not going to happen if he doesn't grow to love the physical stuff... a la Miller. Actually, maligned as Miller is, Morton could learn a lot from Brad.

I can't believe this thread. Of the insane amount of problems we have as a club.... you're complaining about Cale Morton. A guy who had possibly the best debut season I can remember of anyone in Red n Blue!

Do you think maybe his disposal efficiency of 57% on the weekend is because our pathetic forwards didn't mark his kicks? Duhhhhh maybe! When they do the stats, if Cale drills a perfect pass 60 metres, but then Butterfingers Bate drops the mark, it counts as an ineffective disposal to Cale. To put that in perspective to you, Stevie Johnson from Geelong is running at 57% efficiency for the year. Noooooooow, I don't know about you, but in my opinion Steve Johnson uses the ball brilliantly and is in AA form this year.

I'd take Cale Morton over anyone from the 2007 draft bar Cotchin, who is going to be elite if injuries don't hold him back. I don't know if you guys are whinging about him because you've had enough whinging about Juice and Sylvia and losing etc., but this thread is possibly the most retarded thing I've seen in a long time.

Agreed.

However it seems that at one time or another throughout the year at Demonland each player is subjected to this kind of crap. I recall people were calling for Brock McLean and Davey to be dropped after round one.

I'll tolerate a few mistakes from Cale while he steadily improves from young gun to seasoned star!!

The only problem with Cale is that he is good enough to step into senior roles at this early stage in his career.

Get off his back - and enjoy watching him develop.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
