Nothing like that at all. As we approached we could hear people yelling words to the effect of "leave him alone" etc. When we got there it was a violent scuffle of about 5 people and I had no idea who was who or who was really fighting who. There would have been a couple of people in there trying to break it up (I take my hat off to them because it was full on). Seriously one of the Collingwood guys was absolutley built and could have passed as an amature boxer - absolute head hunter. IMO the psychology of many people wasn't just that they may get seriously hurt but also that it if they did go in to break it up it could have just turned it in to an all out brawl because as more and more people approached they would not have understood the situation and just joined in. As I say, we only got there about a minute before the cops and luckily 1 or 2 people did seemingly try to break it up. TBH I was still surprised at how many people were standing around, I think many people were in shock. Going by when the lady told the police as we were coming out the gate (5) I reckon it would have been going for at least a couple of minutes. The cops got there about 30 seconds after us but I think they just wanted to get a few numbers together as they didn't know what they were dealing with. Just for the record, the main Collingwood thug didn't appear to me to be intoxicated but more just a headhunter but the mods may wish to edit/romove this post for legal reasons. Also this wasn't (to me) a Collingwood supporter stereotypical thing, this transcended club alignment - even though there was a little bit of pandemonium it seemed like some of the Collingwood supporters were also yelling at them to stop (Melbourne supporters definitely were). This was just a disgraceful event within Australian society.

Now what i saw makes sense.

I was walking with a couple mates back down to the Precinct Hotel after the game (coming from the MCC ) when i saw a St. Johns Ambulance golf cart and a few people standing around. I walked past three guys sitting down against a statue (one shirtless) handcuffed and the topless guy was just yelling to either his girlfriend or a mate who was a couple of meters away. His girlfriend looked like he was telling him to shut up but all three looked like they would like a fight now and then.

I also saw a young blond headed kid with what looked like a bandage over his right hand standing near the golf cart. If that is Nathan Jones's younger brother and somehow he was injured as a result of that assault then that is nothing short of an absolute disgrace from those three guys.

The one aspect i love about being an Aussie Rules supporter is that you can sit with your mates who follow the opposition and give them a rev up or two but at the end of the game you have a bit of a post match sook or gloat and you let it go.

But if these three guys (and from what i saw was nothing more than 15 seconds) were that smashed that they decided to pick a fight and take it to a level that included a child being injured then that is an absolute disgrace.

Sadly, i'm not surprised - the disgusting behaviour in the 3rd quarter on level 4 by one Pies supporter towards a lady in the crowd summed up my day, and perhaps it's a good thing i left 5 minutes early. Thankfully, a big beefy tattooed Dees supporter stood up after the filth slagged off a poor girl for asking him to tone down his language and to tell him it's "not on" , grabbed him on the shoulder and had a quiet whisper in his ear pointing to the exit.. at least the guy left - would not be surprised if the same guy was involved.

Thugs with nothing to live for. Collingwood sure do set a great example for the lesser members of society e.g. Didak driveby shooting, Tarrant's assaults etc. You really have to wonder whether the clubs condoning of this behaivour seeps through to scumbags like these guys.

Obviously not all Pie fans can be tarred with the lout brush, but today there were three middle aged guys sitting a couple of rows behind me and my wife and ( adult ) kids. One of them swore non stop and would have used the F word at least 20 times in the first quarter. An elderly lady ( Pies supporter ) sitting behind me and in front of him asked him to stop. He then changed the swear word to a lesser one and did not stop screaming the whole game. This was in the AFL section.

As for security one cop walked down the aisle once in the whole game.

I don't think we should be blaming Collingwood for these thugs who assaulted Nathan's dad, but I do agree they should be banned from football, jailed and if the Pies are serious about their image have any membership revoked for a long time if not for ever.

All in the community, including foremost the legal system need to send a message to all that violence will not be tolerated. Everyone including the old and the weak should feel safe when going about their lives. Otherwise it will become a jungle.

I don't normally come onto other team boards, but as a Collingwood Supporter and Member I'm disgusted by these gutless cowardly thugs.

I sincerely hope that Brad Jones and his young son will be ok.

I hope that these gutless wonders are dealt with by the full extent of the law and that if they are members of Collingwood that their Memberships are revoked and that they are banned for life from attending ANY football match.

Good work, that was probably you in the red hat that we saw at the end - takes a fair bit of balls to take on crazy people like that especially the shirtless thug who was pretty built and pumped. The problem is when we arrived and saw you guys we had no idea of what was going on so you can't just jump in otherwise it is chaos. What you said on 'ology makes complete sense, that shirtless thug to me didn't seem intoxicated (not to say he hadn't been drinking). When the cops arrived he spoke ok but his body was shaking a little - he was definitely pumped on some sort of upper/s. I couldn't really distinguish the other thugs from the group, fair bit of confusion.

Anyway this incident is something I'll leave alone from now on and just wish the Jones family all the best in recovery and justice had better be done.

Eddie might be pres of Collingwood, but he's not a bad bloke in spite of that. My hubby met him last year and took the opportunity to ask if he would have a quick chat to his grandfather, who is very ill and unfortunately is also a Collingwood supporter. He called his grandfather on the mobile, and expected Eddie to say hello, and chat for a few seconds, and then hang up, but Eddie talked for about 10 minutes. Grandpa was over the moon! It was like God had called! Eddie certainly didn't have to take that time (and especially when asked by a Melbourne supporter), but he did anyway and made an old man happy.

So as much as I deplore the actions of these three fans, I wouldn't expect anything less than outrage from Eddie. Just think, if it had been Melbourne supporters attacking a Collingwood supporter, what do you think Jimmy's reaction would have been?

I'd suggest that was his son.

Myself and my dad came out of the Punt Rd end and were about 30 or 40 metres away. From where we were it just looked like a typical blue. Obviously had no idea it was Jones' dad or that he was in fact trying to prevent violence and protect people until when we got home. I guess we only caught the end of it. The worst thing was how completely distraught and terrified his son was. That was a pretty shocking image that haunted me all night.

I don't think it's right to talk about 'typical Collingwood filth' and stuff like that. Incidents like yesterday's have nothing to do with football. The vast majority of their fans are just normal people. Unfortunately for everyone, a troublemaking minority does surround their club and attend their games. Actually, now that I think I about it, the first proper fist fight between men I ever saw was when I was about 7 or 8 at a Collingwood game.

I love how the Herald Sun article quoted an "anonymous" witness who said it looked like a "typical soccer brawl". They always want to have a crack at soccer. I've never seen anything like that an A-League match. Or, indeed, any of the games I went to in England.
