If we could win on Saturday we could hit 32,000. I hate compare us the Hawthorn and Carlton but it is amazing what excitement can be created around a club with early draft picks and playing kids. Our off field has helped, so did Hawthorns, Carlton had bank Pratt come on board. After 2009 though winning becomes the key, we all accept that this year will be tough and we will finish bottom 4 next year though we will need to win 8-10 games to keep building the hype and hopefully hit 35,000 members, then the following year we make the finals 40,000, the year after top 4 45,000 the year after the flag 50,000 members, then three flags in a row.

You have to admire the work JS and the team has done, nearly 28,000 as of today, with our planned target of 30,000, we may hit 32,0000+ by the time memberships close. Not bad for a team that everyone tiped as wooden spooners. What would our numbers be like if we were premiership favourites?!!!!!

I can understand the optimism but the only way we are going to get 50 000 members inside the next decade is if the MCC includes a box that has written next to it - "Tick this box if you would like to an MFC member" somewhere on their membership form.

Not a bad idea.

Actually getting up to 45,000 is not as rediculous as it sounds.

Most likely 2009 membership figures= 32,000. This is after 3 of the worst years in the history of our club. Hardly a time new supporters are going to come on board.

If we won a premiership in 5 years time it is safe to assume that with onfield success will come more supporters, including half-assed supporters who only buy memberships when we are a good side.

Thus, with big onfield success, we would probably have 38-40,000 members.

Now look at Hawthorn- they have 8000 Tassie members that they created out of thin air in the space of 10 years by creating a relationship with the region. If we have onfield success, and develop a good relatinoship with the growing Casey community, we too could have an extra 8,000 members from building a relationship with a specific region.

If we win a premiership in the next 5-7 years and Casey move goes smoothly, I wouldn't be surprised if we hit 45-50,000 members in 2019

I meant without an extra cost to the member.

It is a dumb idea financially but would immediately take our membership to 45k overnight.

What's the use though? Just for bragging rights? It doesn't increase attendances, it doesn't make us more attractive for sponsors, all it does is hide our true membership count.

I would never ever wish this sort of thing on any club... except Carlton, who as far as I'm concerned should be wiped off the face of the planet.

You could be my daughter.

How can amybody be a member of the club if they are not Financial. That is what a supporter is.

Don't understand your Logic, would cost the club for no gain. Melbourne must spend wisely.

I gotta tell you, I was being facetious.

And yes, bragging rights...

Uncles are Collingwood fans and a few friends Hawthorn...

Huh, I guess I am shallow...

Seems like optimism abounds - the same optimism in relation to future membership projections as is applied each week to crowd number projections.

When good times come, many of those same members may once again become Blasé.

Disagree.

A premiership would be the best thing possible for increasing membership and supporter numbers.

Our onfield crapness is a main reason why we have low ozkick numbers.

Fact- youngsters want to barrack for the best team!

I think we might crack the 30,000 by Monday 20th April, right after the Richmond game. Fantastic.

The suggestion of giving free memberships is a valid one for a number of reasons and has been debated for a few years.

1: We already get money from the MCC and with the recent announcements more benefits will follow, I'm sure somewhere in that $1m they can say 10% covers MMC members, membership of the footy club or by some other internal mechanism.

2: They are MFC supports and already attending games, through the MCC.

3: Giving us 40/50k+ registered members gives us a huge appeal to sponsors. ie more customers to reach directly with their sponsorship.

If you worried about hiding our true figures, I think the AFL rules requires the publishing of the different categories of members such as non-game day members at Richmond. We simply add a MCC members section.

4: It gets the MCC members more directly involved in the footy club, with updates, newsletters and correspondence going directly to them. This has flow on affects to building more support, socially and financially.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
