Maverick side of Melbourne

Poignant article by Martin Flanagan including the following quote:

He doesn't believe Melbourne can ever be relocated. "Melbourne's got an attachment to the MCG and to this city that's real. If Melbourne relocated, it would always be a lie. We are the club of this city." I ask him what he wants to see this year. It's not so much wins he's looking for as "the beginning of a build".

Bridie is not impressed by people who boast about barracking for clubs like Manchester United and Essendon. "Too easy," he says.

Absolutely delighted to see that Flanagan is embedded with the MFC for this year.

By far and away the best football writer in the country.

I think that's going a bit too far. I could have sworn we delisted Saddam Hussein last year!

Just finished reading it as part of my morning read..and thought..I wonder if others have already caught it?

Good to see supporting Melbourne put in such a different light..so far removed from the stereotype. It hits the nail on the head and probably for many satisfactorily pacakges the reasons why we do STILL follow our beloved team. Because we are mavericks..because it isnt easy. We draw from the hardships and build even greater resolve.

Great article. You've said it all 'bub.

Yeah, good article. I really love the last paragraph. I hate the typical United or LA Lakers or West Coast Eagles fan. They don't know pain. They don't know what it's like to have nothing. There's no passion. Success is like going through the motions. It's not normal to not experience failure. You can't truly succeed if you don't fail beforehand.

My only concern is that by describing the subjects of his interview as "mavericks", it might become accepted that the majority of Melbourne supporters actually do fit the tired old sterotype. I don't accept that.

A nice piece about the Dees but I'm not sure what was thought-provoking.

I agree. There was nothing particularly illuminating or enlightening about this lightweight piece .

I think it just gave Flanagan an opportunity to have a few ales with an old mate who happened to barrack for the Dees .

Agree.

However, I love My Friend the Chocolate Cake and through a mutual friend, I know Bridie "bleeds red and blue" (I can use that term when its not related to a player deserving a game).

And I share Jacks view of the mavericks. Are we all mavericks then ????

lol: Lucky you added the bit in brackets Rhino, or there would have been 500 posters jumping on here to shoot you down!

Thought provoking in terms of what it means to follow a club which has struggled in recent history and how that struggle can help bind you to it. Also, the tales of when we were a superpower and how it seems but a distant legend to be discussed in hushed tones, thus making the struggle even more painful. And thought provoking that he mentions Andrew Obst as his favourite player of the 90s and how Obst seemed to optimise the no-frills side of the Dees which parts of the media totally ignore..... Did strike a bit of a chord with me last night (possibly aided by the glasses of red consumed earlier!).

The majority of the people who would believe that stereotype wouldn't have the faintest idea of the meaning of the word Maverick. Most of them would think it meant an American fighter pilot...

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov
