We now have a nucleus of three tall defenders, two(Garland and Martin) of which can play on smalls and bigs. Add to that Rivers if he is ever able to get on the park again, and i am starting to wonder where Frawley might be able to squeeze in if all are fit and available.

Personally, i'd like DB to maybe remove the shackles from Frawley a bit and let him play as a running half back flanker. From his first game he always seemed to enjoy taking the opposiiton on and having a dash from the backline, and although his kicking action is ungainly, he seems to hit targets. Wheatley is playing this role at the moment and he doesn't hit targets as often as he should, so it could be worth a try. I feel we really lack a bit of pace running the ball out of the backline breaking the lines.

Of course the other option is putting him up as trade bait, weren't the Saints keen on him at the draft and again last year?

It would seem a waste of our first round draft pick be a depth player, but he is still young and will improve, so i will take the abuse i will receive on that point also.

we have garland martin warnock rivers

i still think frawley could develop into a fine KP defender

i dont think hes worth getting rid of

if there is congestion, we could try garland in the forward line

I cannot explain why but I see something in Frawley.

CJ Garland Frawley

M.Warnock Martin Rivers

Green Moloney Morton

Davey Miller Bate

Ozzie Watts Maric

PJ Jones McLean

R.Warnock Grimes Petterd Bruce

EMG: Robbo Sylvia Wheatley Valenti Buckley Dunn Bode Bartram Newton

Actually looks a solid side to me

I read that Frawley played much of his junior footy as a winger, but then had a growth spurt and played KP.

However, I'm not sure Frawley's skills are good enough to play primarily as a rebounding defender/winger.

I don't mind what his kick looks like, but when we're chipping it around the back half of the ground he has an unfortunate knack of failing to hit targets.

PS. It's not like the other guys you mentioned have nailed down a spot in the backline, IMHO. They might do so in future, but it's early days...

martin is 198cm and 97kg. which small is he playing on?

but i see your point. we suddenly have martin, garland, warnock, frawley and rivers who are all vying for KPD spots of which there are perhaps 3. it is a situation we havnt been in for years...

No we had people crowing when we had Rivers, Carroll, Nicho, Ferg, Bizzell. Fool's gold. Its not the numbers, its the quality of the players. There is alot of promise in Garland, Martin and to a lesser extent Frawley and Warnock.

Just a thought if Rivers comes back fit in 2009 would anyone play him forward???

If you actually read my post, i did state what my personal preference was for Frawley. The trade was only a side note suggestion.

I wouldn't want the club to shop him around, but if another club came forward with a good offer, would we not have a think about it, considering we now appear to have a bit of depth on that area?

Garland plays on mobile running forwards, not huge marking monsters. Nor fast leading powerfull marks.

Future defence ;-

Bcks/ Cheney / Frawley / Garland-Martin

HBck/ McNamara / Warnock / Garland-Petterd

Cntrs/ Johnson / Grimes / Buckley-Morton

Frawley has good pace and good size, but there are some concerns. He's a poor reader of the ball in flight, he spends too much time worrying about his opponent only to be easily out manouvred. Even smalls like Medhurst have made him look silly in a marking contest.

He has ability, but lacks footy smarts.

We could have had Jack Riewoldt. I wish we did. But Chip has scope for improvement.

I'm not a huge fan of discussing trades at this stage of the season but I think it might be worth offering him around and see what offers we can get in trade week. He, now, seems to be surplus to our needs and is one of our few expendable players who might have some value (given he is very young, was selected 12th in a very highly rated draft, and does have good physical attributes and potential to develop into a good player).

I agree Jerry. I remember in the Carlton game Frawley played on Fevola (and did alright I thought), but at times he took the ball and ran with it out of defence. He showed some pace and he kicked well, so I reckon a half back flanker is the way to go. He can have Bell's spot for mine.

Frawls has great pace for his height, and would be a great asset of the flank. There is plenty of room for him in this side, and he has plenty of time to develop and become something special.

Our backline stocks are the best they have ever been. Frawls fits into this team, and maybe, just maybe we will no longer have to use bruce and green as makeshift backman, as we now have a strong bond down back, and Rivers to be the floating backman player (ala green, bruce and from the past Bizzell).

Now we can rebuild the forward line via this draft. All looking peachy if you ask me, and yes, Frawls will be a part of it all.

TRADE HIM!

He is 5th in line for a key position down back.

He is not a flanker.

A flanker needs pace and exceptional skill to set up play with long dashes and long accurate kicks.

Frawley is hardly blessed with exceptional foot skills.

Trade him while he is worth something.

do NOT trade him bc his value is lower than his worth atm.

just the kid time. 19 yrs old. another typical example of demonlanders calling for a teenagers head before they have reached 20 games.

KP defenders take time, and he has barely had 1 preseason in the gym.

I believe Martin, Warnock, Frawley and Rivers will be the 4 KP defenders of the future, and i must say i agree that Garland could have a future in the forward line especially as he was drafted as a forward.

Garland is the most versatile of the bunch, and if we have 4 good KP defenders, why not give him a go.

Either way this is a good problem to have.

Posted
I'd trade him if another club is keen enough.

Has not impressed me at all.

If someone offered a 1st rounder in this draft you would have to consider it. With 3 first rounders we could target an extra mid or KPP forward.

The big if would be Rivers, if he doesn't come good it would be risky to trade Chip. Can someone fill us in if Cheeney and McNamara are simular types?

Posted

He might be insurance, has more development to be pumped into him. He's still young. If Rivers can't get his body back together it might be worthwhile to keep him. I wouldn't look to trade him just yet. He's a handy type

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
