Disappointed with the Coaching Staff re: Jonesy

Nathan Jones - you gun!! Welcome to the big time. Freo paid you the respect you deserve and part of your learning process will be to beat the heavy tag that will become a part of your footy career. Hence my disappointment at the Coaching Staff in not supporting Jonesy when he was heavily tagged by Crowley.

Options:

1) Instruct other on-ballers to block, block, block

2) Move the Jones boy to the back pocket where the entire psyche of the tagger changes - all of a sudden he's a forward pocket, so the hunter becomes the hunted.

3) Make Jonesy the tagger afainst another player so there's double the fun.

The kid was frustrated yesterday, but that's good because this will be a great lesson for him.

Jones doesn't hurt enough with the ball to warrant being tagged yet and the number 1 tag, IMO, should always go to Brock.

I don't think that the coaching staff were enormously distressed that Jones wasn't getting much of it, since that meant that our more damaging midfielders were being allowed to run free.

Exactly, it was working for us so why change it! Crowley on Jones suited us...as did Carr's knee on Ablett's groin

with jones stepping up in recent weeks and playing some good footy it means that there are now more players that opposotion teams willt hink about tagging. i dont mind they tag jones because brock uses it better, but i agree we as a team, and specifically a midfield group, need to learn how to deal with tags, not just individually but as a team. jones was tagged out of the game, but his team mates werent helping with the blocks, which should happen automatically. other options discussed above such as moving him forward or back should be used more often aswell...

Ahhh... but we may yet not have the choice...

I'd settle for a gun midfielder, as opposed to a wooden spoon and a gun Ruckman.

Who knows where we'll finish - our formline is ahead of a few teams, and will stay that way for at least two weeks!

i don't think the coaching staff would've been too distressed to have crowley manning up jones in a back pocket... the smart play from freo would've been to have him go back into the middle and have a go at someone else... poor coaching from Harvey...

vanlo, i reckon you're underestimating nathan jones. He would have got the ball 20-30 times if crowley wasn't on him.

i was talking about putting jones in the back pocket, so crowley becomes a forward and that means crowley's entire mindset needed to change - ie he has to lose his man, lead, create space, etc

Anyway, you're right, Harvey was ordinary but I wanted our coaching staff to protect Jonesy more.

Look at how the Carlton players block and protect Judd, direct orders from Ratten.

Exactly! It was a good learning experience for him and he should view tapes of Power, Black, Judd, Harvey (North) to learn how these players break tags every week...

jonesy was getting towelled up by crowley, so they moved him to the forward line in an effort to free him up from crowley, as I'm sure Bailey assumed they would move crowley back in the middle to tag someone else, and just play a defender on jones... However they kept Crowley on him, so that was a win, having the opposition's best tagger playing in the back pocket. To keep it that way they decided to sacrifice Jones' game and keep him in the forward pocket for the team, and I think it was good coaching.

If crowley leaves him for another opponent, then you put him back in the middle.

They won't tag Jones again. McLean is a lot better than he is. I'm surprised that you would tag a midfielder just cause he kicked 4 goals last week he still done nothing around the ground.

I actually think you're options 1 and 3 were both tried. Around the clearances Brock was doing all he could to try and give Jones a good run at the footy by blocking Crowley and I'm pretty sure Jones came out on the field to run with Palmer for a while. I think number 2 would have been a big win for Fremantle though, Crowley isn't too bad a finisher. I actually thought moving him forward late in the game was the right thing to do.

At the end of the day Jones just had a bad day, every player has them and I'm sure he will bounce back. It was good we could afford him to have a bad day.

TJ tended to struggle with a tag, and we need to ensure that our midfieldiers, individually and as a group, can learn how to deal with being tagged.

Correct. MFC will not be a force until it can find and develop elite midifielders. We dont have them at the moment.
