I knew Jones had a shocker but 4 possessions

and we actually won with 4 players not touching the ball in the second half, that is amazing, Jones, Rivers (both 4 possessions for the game) did not have a touch after half time, Frawley and Carrol 6 each also no touches after half time

Is that some sort of bizarre stat or what.

Jones was tagged out of it by Crowley, who IMO was one of their best players. He's now had a very hard tag and struggled with it. He'll learn.

Not that surprising that the others down back didn't get a lot of it. We had control of the ball for the majority of the second half.

Jones scored a massive 7 points for my dream team.

Haha! I traded him out and bought Cameron Ling a few weeks ago. Ling scored over 100 this week (in supercoach):)

I'm not having a go at you but in terms of the defenders did you click on to 1% and spoils? This is what Rivers, Frawley and Bell managed to do on frequently occasions, they don't show up as disposals but they are extremely valuable nonetheless.

I realise that, rivs played a fair bit in the F50 in the last and hit the pack nicely for robbo to mark, but still 4 players not to have a disposal shocked me, I'm not having a go at them, it just amazes me.

Rivers, Frawley, and Carroll usually get the lateral kick when others are too sh!t scared to do anything themselves. No-one was scared in that second half.

And Jones had an awful day.

Although w/o TJ the tagging duties get shared between Bruce, Jones, McLean and Green. Less of a burden.

Posted

The tag seems to be shared between McLean and Jones, can not remember the last time Bruce or green got tagged, and I mean properly tagged by the oppositions best tagger.

Posted

When Green and Bruce move into the midfield they are very closely minded. But, you're right, they do play FP and HBF respectively for much of the time.

They should be dominating in the centre, but that's another question for a later time. Just want to enjoy the win.

Rivers could have gone the whole game without touching the ball and he still would have had an influence. He intercepted about 5 direct passes to Pavlova and punched away quite a few seemingly easy marks from the Freo forwards.

frawley's a spud

rivers made one big punch in the dying minutes, disspaointing

shows who stands up at a the worst of times

weird about jones though

so we kick 10 goals more than the opposition in the second half, and you have a go at how many disposals our defenders got in that period?

Posted

Green is far more dangerous around the forward 50 than struggling to get rushed handballs through the middle. His marking running back with the flight and long accurate kicking is best utilised within striking distance of the goals as evidenced on a couple of occassions yesterday.

Rivers, Bell, Frawley & Warnocks spoiling yesterday was the best we have seen all year by the length of the flemington straight. Carrol got a few nice fists in too.

Without Pavlich in the second half Melbourne would have won by 6 goals. Scary thought when they were up by 50 at half time.

the players definitely shelved the over use of the hand ball coming out of defence after half time. Wheatley, Bruce and White made multiple errors trying to do this in the first half and looked much more comfortable lifting their eyes and looking for a longer option in the second half. having a hardworking and effective half forward line in Bate, Miller and Wona made this work.

Miller has been ok at CHF so far this year but having Bate alongside him might be the perfect foil. Bate is capable of the things Miller struggles with i.e. long accurate kicking, creativity and reading the play. This will draw players and allow Miller to run at the ball carier 1 on 1 a situation that suits him.

Lets hope we can draw on the confidence and remain comptetive for the rest of the season. As much as I would like to win as many games as possible however I would hate for Essendon, West Coast or Freo to be rewarded with a higher draft pick.

QFT. Their defensive pressure in the second half was fantastic, and I put a lot of that onto Rivers, Bell, Frawley and a lesser extent, Carroll, who didn't let a dominate 1st half by Pavlova let him down.

Yeah, I was going to post the same thing, I thought he was very good and he is well and truly back to his best form. He should definitely play in the game coming up this weekend.

I did the same thing, and bought Bateman. I was seriously regretting that after Jones scored 100+ in successive weeks.

He should but I wouldn't want him to in case he gets injured. We look a million times better with him in defense than without him. He reads the play really well. I also liked Warnock's game yesterday, it was one of only a few times I'd seen him play and he surprised me a bit with his spoiling. Also liked Garland and Frawley but then again they'll all look good today from that game when we controlled the ball for a half of football.

Rivers = One of the best 4 possession games you'll ever see.

You can add 10 1%ers to that too. It was almost always his fist doing the punching.

Interesting observations

Jared Rivers...Seven 1%

Rivers had two spoils inside defensive 50 before he had a posession.

Frawley is Mr. Disciplined, if you ask me, and will have a career full of low-possession high value games.

exactly, Rivers did heaps of blocking, punching away and general tidying up in the second half, he was fine. Crowley was just all over Jones and he became very frustrated

They tagged Jones, which meant that McLean had a free day out.

Other games McLean has been tagged so Jones can get the footy.

Spot on Powelly.

Agree with Rivs and Chip, I still find it amazing we had 4 players, 4 not who they were but 4 players who did not touch the ball in the second half.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
