  1. Remember when headlines in the media used to give you a vague idea of the content? I hate being forced to read/listen to the content before getting to decide if I'm interested in it or not. Anyway, luckily for me, why we can't be trusted isn't a question I'm seeking an answer to. Anyone who has followed this club any longer than about 3 years knows why: because we always seem to stumble when we think we're about to clear the next hurdle. Maybe we don't actually "always" - in fact it's probably only "occasionally", but it feels like that when you spent as long a time being uncompetitive as we did. Trust will come. I personally had restored my level of trust considerably before last week: I knew that even when we were playing poorly, this MFC team didn't give up and roll over. We could go into any game, we'd probably still be in it at 3/4 time and I knew we could beat anyone if we played our best. I was still hopeful at 1/2 time against Hawthorn. The slap in the face during the second half stung painfully because I was unprepared for it (read: I had trust). In reality, all teams have at least one game a year where they play like arse and get flogged, but for the MFC fan it hurt, because of the fragility of the trust. Fans of very trustworthy teams can endure it and shake it off quickly. Fans of teams who are very untrustworthy expect that pain and can brace for it. It'll take time to recover it again, but it can happen. It's not a permanent loss of trust, just a setback to the trust that was being earned. Thanks for the analysis Plough (I still haven't followed the link).

  2. Humour...it was Bernie being Bernie. There are many on here jumping at shadows this week. I might have tune out for a while, this is not very productive.

  3. I don't trust them in terms of within games or week to week, though I still think we'll play finals this year. Perhaps foolishly on the evidence of Sunday afternoon. Certainly I don't see talent on the list being an issue anymore. It's now a matter of coaching, structures, mindset etc. All of which is now under the microscope. Supporting this club is one monumental mindf***.

  4. Posters are now looking for anything to have a go. It was clearly very tongue in cheek due to Dusty being Dusty. Go out and get some fresh air.

  6. PJ would have been filthy with the weekend's thrashing. Had we won against the Hawks, and won well, we could have drawn 90,000 on Tuesday night and been hyped up as the biggest clash of the year to date. Now the narrative is about our response to the shellacking, rather than a block-buster clash between two teams near the top of the ladder, which would have drawn thousands more neutral supporters through the gates. The MCC is predicting 82,000, but I suspect it'll be closer to 75,000. For comparison's sake, the MCC expect 90,000 for the Collingwood-Essendon match. A real missed opportunity, both for additional revenue and the chance to play in the biggest game of the season outside finals.

  7. Plough is Dead right We let teams heavily score and do nothing about it on or off field Where is the leadership on the ground? it’s why i have never rated Jones as a Captain. Great servant yes, but no Captain Clubs are going to come hard at us now, and if we don’t react, it’s back to the bottom where this club has sat so often.

  13. I cannot believe that this hasn't been addressed and if it has why is it still a problem?

  14. I have read a few of your posts and you have a very poor understanding of football or you are simply trolling. Hunt is the only player keeping Hunt out of the team. He was dropped.

  16. Jayden Hunt is keeping Jayden Hunt out of the side. From the moment the first JLT game began until he was dropped he was in horrible, horrible form. It had nothing to do with Jordan Lewis.

  17. Out of 36 game this year 34 games have had at least one team kick 4 or more in a row. Is this a problem across all teams or just the current buzz topic for Melb. Carlton has conceded 4 or more goals 8 times. 10 in a row the biggest. Bris - 7 (11) Stk – 6 (7) WB – 5 (9) Suns – 5 (5) Melb – 5 (10) Haw - 4 (4) Adel – 3 (5) Coll – 3 (4) GWS – 3 (7) WCE – 3 (6) SYD – 3 (4) Rich – 2 (5) Ess – 2 (5) Port – 2 (4) Freo 2 (4) Nth – 2 (5) Gee – 2 (5)

  19. I'd say it's stubborn, not dumb, coaching from Goodwin. They would have trained with these structures all summer and it would be hard to just chuck it all in at the sign of a problem. They tried to rectify it in the last term but by then it was too late. It's just as bad to constantly change a structure as it is to just stick with it. Seeing what is occurring and make the correct changes is hard to learn. Clarkson has been doing it for 15 years - when he saw what was wrong in the first term, he tweaked a few things and it made a huge difference. Goodwin is clearly still learning to do the same thing in just his second season and, as the last paragraph states, would have learned plenty from the weekend. His challenge now, and the hope for us supporters, is that he has learned from it now. No doubt he was thoroughly out coached on the weekend and he needs to learn quickly how to respond when the momentum turns, but the positive is that he CAN learn from it and he CAN work with the players to make things better.

  20. It's almost like the hand isn't a very complex bit of anatomy with a variety of nerves and sensations, where an injury could be anywhere between trivial and debilitating.

  22. Not painful? Honestly? Try getting the site of the injury smacked with a wet football or using that hand in a tackle or marking contest and see if it’s not painful.

  24. Unlike what many here think, I believe the media is active in its positive support for us, as evident in its talking up of Melbourne throughout the pre-season. When Melbourne goes bad it's a story because we've been so bad for so long, and I think people do genuinely want to see us do well. The expectation now is that we should not be performing still as we did on the weekend. It's a story because even people that don't support Melbourne are sick and tired of the rubbish they give up. Media folk are just as quick to talk us up and praise us as the next best thing as they are to talk us down. IMO, the scrutiny we have faced this week is completely justified. It was as bad a performance by a team as we've seen this year. Carlton hasn't had anywhere near as much AFL assistance as us, and didn't have a Paul Roos or Peter Jackson brought it to right the ship. It's a non-story when they don't perform. Essendon is building back from 4 years of excessive media scrutiny that goes far beyond any on-field ineptness. I don't think Essendon performing badly is interesting. Like Carlton, it's a bit of a non-story. The public is just exhausted of anything Essendon. For all the complaining Melbourne fans make of us not getting coverage in the media, we actually get a hell of a lot. St Kilda didn't get anywhere near as much coverage about its performance as we have after one bad performance. I get that the media are merchants of negativity, but even as one of the league's so-called "smaller" clubs, we have always seemed to get coverage akin to that of the powerhouses. This may be due to the club's "friends" in high places, and the weird number of people in the media industry that are Melbourne supporters (we probably have more former Melbourne players, and supporters working in the media than any other club). We're scrutinised because people expect (and want) so much from the club. That's not a bad thing. Besides, none of the coverage this week has been unjustified. We deserved to be hounded. That wasn't just a 67-point loss. It was -- as they say -- a football lesson.

  26. That's fine. If you think his performance has been poor this season then there's nothing wrong with that opinion. I think most of us have been disappointed in the tasteless way a select few have potted the bloke in the face of an injury. There's no need for that.

  27. Go back and take a look at the posters who took some sort of delight in his injury. It will tell you all you need to know. Anyone who is happy to see one of our players injured isn't a true supporter of this club.

  28. Yep certainly some vitriol being spewed in here. He had a poor game, but a broken hand explains why. He's a tough guy Jordy! Good on him for seeing the game out, must've been hard in those conditions and being part of such a disaster to keep pushing himself. He can heal up for a few weeks now and hopefully return fresh and primed to have an impact.

  29. So many sh.t supporters potting a bloke who broke his hand and still played over a half of football with it. I assume most who are potting would miss a day of work with a paper cut. Poor form.
