  1. To the people saying drop Toumpas, yes he made a few poor decisions, but overall he actually had a decent game. He had 21 disposals, 8 contested, 80% efficiency, 5 score involvements, 4 clearances, 3 rebound 50s and 4 tackles. They're decent stats, and he was far from our worst today. We need to let him gain more confidence and build on these games. He's already showing a bit this year. Dropping him would be yet another poor selection decision. I'm sick of him being a scape goat on this site.

  2. Disagree with all those blaming Roos for being 'out-coached'. Teams leave loose men in back halves regularly. Our problem was not that we needed a man to go to Oaxley. Our problem was that we have too many players who refuse to think when the ball is in their hands... You can't just bang it on the boot when there is a loose man back. That's under 10's stuff. How [censored] hard is it for players to think a little? We lost the game simply because of a lack of skill and decision making from players throughout our team. That should be obvious to everyone. Have one glance at the goals Collingwood scored from turnovers. Fitzpatrick, Dunn, McDonald, Pederson. These players all made unbelievably embarrassing errors. Sure it's forgivable for one or two players to make one blunder a game. But when you have a handful of blokes consistently making terrible decisions and poorly executing them then you know your team is in trouble.

  3. wow. Gawn was very good today, fed Bernie and N. Jones and Viney numerous times when rucking. You are better than this Adam.

  4. Lost in the coaches box. Got a red hot Garlett waiting for anything to hit the ground, yet we leave Oxley on his own to mark everything. He should've been manned up, or lined up and smashed. Apart from that I was happy enough with the overall effort.

  5. I thought Jack Watts was very good today !! Really liked his intensity and possesions put to advantage! Something we sorely don't have enough of! His sensational tackle and goal were inspirational ! Well done young man!

  6. FFS, I am not a huge Toumpas fan, but being a 'scaredy cat' is not one of his issues. He definitely lacks composure in congestion, but you just sound like a wood duck continually bringing him up each and every week.

  7. Really disappointed in the coaching staff today. The players were brilliant, yes Ftiz and Dunn had brain explosions and Watts could've been harder with the mark. But for the first time I can remember we lost this match in the coaching box. When we had an even number of players in the forward line, we moved the ball with confidence knowing we'll have a contest. Scored multiple goals in a row. As soon as Buckley put an extra back, we passed sideways and when we did kick long up forward their extra Oxely marked. Our scoring dried up. Worst game Roos and co have coached and I'm a Roos fan. Very disappointed. Missed opportunity.

  10. We lost game with stupid turnovers, gave soft goals to them and a few very poor umpiring decisions, nothing to do with Roo's.

  11. You really believe that? Liam Jurrah was never known for having the tank necessary for the style of game that they play these days. It certainly frustrated his coaches and held him back despite his undoubted talents. I was at that St. Kilda game and when he was taken off after kicking a goal, he was blowing hard. He would have come off the ground no matter who was coaching. Roos would have done the same and he never would have kicked ten and St. Kilda was toying with us in their last game before the finals. When they put on the afterburners after half time, they blew us apart. Liam's mentor and biographer often came on Demonland to compliment the way the club looked after him. He was made an ambassador to NT communities along with Aaron Davey to promote awareness of glaucoma among indigenous communities and Josh Mahoney put in a lot of work with him. Not only that, the end of Jurrah's career had nothing to do with tanking. He injured himself, didn't rehab well and then made that fateful trip to Alice Springs. I can understand how people forget these little things if they have other agendas.

  13. Was really impressed with toumpas today, what a lot of people don't realise is in addition to gathering 20 odd touches he also tagged steele Sidebottom and did a bloody good job of it! I know he made some silly mistakes, like most players today, but his overall performance was quite good. Seems to be improving each week...

  14. Viscount I am pulling rank on you as an Earl! I have never been a Watts fan although I recognise the skills he has but doesn't use enough but today he had a real crack he worked well in traffic, tackled and ran into space and managed a crucial tackle that got us a free and he kicked the goal. Yes it wasn't a blinder but I would be more than happy if he did that every week. And why we as a team don't set up to get the ball into his hands more often for the forward 50 entry I don't understand. He can be infuriating but today he played his part.

  15. We weren't outcoached. Collingwood scored 12 goals off turnovers. 12! So many of the goals were so dumb. Collingwood is very average and beatable and they were not a 4-goal better side today. Instead we made them look so good by handing them goals. cloak, 7 straight? We have a new recipient of the Kent Kingsley Award For Spuds Who Play Well Against Melbourne.

  16. That's it, just those couple small moments in the game cost us. Watts fumble 25m straight in front early that turned into a Filth goal, Fitzys ridiculous tunnel ball attempt and Dunnys kick in shank all massively cost us. Unfortunately with Oxley, the only way we could man him up was to take away the spare man back in front of Cloke who played the best game for years... and WTF was with him kicking straight for once?? Anyway, lots of positives out of the day but still a bit devastated. Massive crush on young Gus. He will be special

  17. Sorry but apart from one terrible turnover, Gawn showed how valuable it is to have a Ruckman who can tap to advantage and compete in the air all over the ground. In my opinion, his game today was far better than any of Spencer's have been.

  20. That St Kilda game still haunts me. Liam was ready to kick ten that day but we were intent on tanking and dragged him repeatedly when he looked like tearing the game apart. Final round, we were bottom, St Kilda top and it wasn't supposed to even be close. Yet, Liam simply dominated and we were sell up midway through second quarter when he got dragged. A potential breakout 8-10 goal game ended up a farce. Following a win that day, Liam should've been celebrated as the new great forward in the game, instead he and the team left dispirited by the tanking and the internal politics at the MFC and we became the mess we were for the following years. A real turning point moment in both his career and the fortunes of the MFC. He of all people, coming from such a foreign world, needed a stable and supportive environment. The MFC let him down that day and in the year and a half that followed. I can't help but think that if he turned up now, the fresh faced excited kid we all saw, that the Paul Roos era would guide his optimism and talent to the highest realms of our game.

  21. Cross would have to be in our top 3 for BnF so far. His courage, marking, even disposal are A grade at the moment.

  22. He's only 10 games into his career, but Gus could very well be the best first round pick we've drafted in years. Definitely deserved the nod this week. I already feel confident whenever he has the ball in hand. EDIT: Just reached the personal milestone of 1000 posts. Cheers to all who put in the hard work that makes this website possible. Go Dees!

  23. Watts also played his best game since round 1. It was great to see the boys get around him after he won the free kick and kicked the goal.

  24. I think losing Vanders at half time really hurt our aggression and pressure. Was set for another 25-30 disposal, 10 tackle game.

  25. There was a moment from Toumpas which summed him up for me. He took a mark on the half back flank, was ten metres in the clear and before even turning around to look down the ground he handpassed the ball backwards to Gawn who then turned it over. He just has no attacking instinct and still panics too much, I'm sure his stats look fine but that's about it.

  27. I'd be taking a good look at both Toumpas and Fitzpatrick. May have done some good things but both liabilities when either under pressure or if the oposition has the ball.

  28. The fact he couldn't run out the game as well as you think he should have had zero impact on the result. He was far more valuable then either of Jamar or Spencer have been for us and his match fitness will improve once he stays in the side.

  29. Oxley marked because of rushed long kicks forward because we didn't have a one on one match up. Skill errors were a result of Collingwood pressure and lack of skill on our end. Those cannot be avoided, Oxley as a loose could have,

  30. Disappointed with the loss, and allowing the loose man across half back hurt us, but I can't fault the team or the direction we are heading in. Our midfield stood up today. Vince, Jones, Cross, Viney, Brayshaw were all excellent. Toumpas had 20 touches and, while he still panics a little with the ball in his hands, he is slowly gaining in confidence. Big Gawny was great in the ruck and is more mobile than Spencer and Jamar and after a poor start Wattsy was better as well. We were sunk by Cloke and a quiet day from both Hogan and, to an extent, Garlett. Our bottom few players out there today didn't do enough either. Newton and Riley has minimal impact and M. Jones offered little when he came on. Hopefully Vanders is fit for next week, we regain Tyson and beat the Saints.

  34. If Brayshaw keeps up this standard he could give the award a serious shake this year. We have a jet on our hands.

  35. I should add, Fitzpatrick's mistake was embarrassing, but it happened because Gawn tried to mark the ball on the line instead of punching it through. How many goals have we given up on the goal line this year, mainly because our ruckmen aren't trained to kill the contest? Fitzpatrick never should have had to have his panic moment.

  36. Thought we lost a bit when Vandenberg went off, and loose man Oxley probably won the game for them in the end. Saw the future of our midfield there with Brayshaw and Viney having great games, bring on Petracca.

  37. I'm going to find umpire no 28 and slaughter his poodle in front of him and then make him eat it. He sat there 20 m from the play and did nothing while they molested us. Then he picks one up 60 m from the play. I want him dead. Maggot [censored]

  38. I was pretty happy. If you take out the goals from the supposed out-on-the-full free, Fitz's scoop goal and Dunn's bad kick out we were very close. In particular the come back in Q2 will be great for their confidence. We all know what usually happens when we fall behind by a few goals. Great to see that did not happen.

  39. Throughout the whole game when Collingwood had Oxley loose in defence we didn't kick goals, when we had even numbers in the forward line we were kicking goals. I'm not sure what game some of you were watching.

  41. effort was good from most. Brayshaw immense. Bernie immense. N. Jones immense. Oxley, sadly, allowed to be immense. Hogan double teamed, which will happen his whole career so our plays need to learn to block for him etc. Gawn will be our ruck men for the next 8 years, people who want him gone are idiots. Big game against saints next week, we are both on 3 wins, one of us will be on 4. Game on.

  47. I was speechless readng hirds article, tb4 or not they are in this position because they can't prove themsleves innocent, because his program seemingly wasnt one that warrented comprehensive records, despite its experimental nature and the hundreds of thousands of dollars put into it. Say what you will about wada but rightly or wrongly this is 100% the fault of the esssndon footy club, not wada's for exercising their right to appeal, just as the bombers and hird has both done earlier.

  49. Essentially the above has always applied but there are many in the football world including the media who have clouded the issue because of their own vested interests (and on both sides of the argument). The standard remains one of proof to the comfortable satisfaction of the tribunal hearing the case as to whether the Essendon players ingested the illegal substance TB4. There is more chance that Charter, Alavi and even Dank will be compelled to give evidence because of the different nature of the CAS Tribunal compared to that of the AFL. Supreme Court judge Croft ruled against compelling Charter and Alavi because it wasn't a court of arbitration - once they are compelled to give evidence the game changes. As for Worksafe, don't hold your breath.

  50. Thankyou for this link Deefrag.Noting it went for over 13 minutes, I'm not sure why I tuned in - but I'm pleased I did although the barrister's unwillingness to mention any names did make it a somewhat frustrating interview. What the interview did tell me was that this matter could drag on for as long as the parties have the funds to keep fighting. At the end of the day I want to see the person largely responsible for the whole sorry mess - James Hird - thrown out of the game for good. As much as I dislike - no, hate, Essendon - I accept that further sanctions against the club will damage the code. Hird's outrageous statement that the AFL Tribunal found the players " innocent" and his pathetic self-serving comment after their thrashing yesterday that the WADA announcement had affected his players - only added to my anti-Hird stance on this whole issue. Can someone explain to me why Worksafe have not taken action on the occupational health and safety failings which underpin all this ? I had accepted that they had deferred any action pending the tribunal's finding. Are they holding off pending the CAS hearing - or is something else hindering their progress ? If not - then we must assume that despite club's governance failings, Worksafe do not have sufficient evidence to prosecute for administering drugs to employees without maintaining appropriate records? Surely the waivers the players signed prior to program do not protect the club from all its health and safety obligations ? How is it that almost 3 years down the track Worksafe has been deafeningly silent?
